School accident: Boy, 5, dies after falling down stairs at Wodonga South Primary

A young boy has died after suffering a head injury in a tragic accident at a school in Victoria's north-east.

Victoria Police said the five-year-old fell on stairs at Wodonga South Primary, part of Southern Rise Education Centre, about 4.30pm on Tuesday.

Paramedics treated the boy at the scene, before taking him to the Albury Hospital, where he died soon after.

Principal Clint Eckhardt released a statement to the media on Wednesday morning saying his thoughts were with all affected.

"I'm deeply saddened to confirm that we lost one of our youngest students yesterday in a tragic accident," he said.

"This news has had a profound impact … and I know that our community will band together and support each other throughout this time.

"We have support available for anyone who needs it at school today and over the coming days."

The death was not being treated as suspicious and police will prepare a report for the coroner.

The Victorian Department of Education will also launch an investigation into the accident.

Detective Sergeant Graeme Simpfendorfer told Channel Seven police believe the boy fell onto two concrete steps.

"The exact circumstances as to what he was doing before and during the incident that led to his death are still under investigation," he said.

The boy's family recently moved to Wodonga from Ballarat. It is understood he was an only child.

One friend, who did not wish to be named, said the community is struggling to come to terms with the five-year-old's death.

"This shouldn't happen, not to anyone," she said.
