Nature notes
Swallows are flying south in large numbers. Most of them are in flocks and they will go as far as South Africa. They have principally been seen moving down the east coast, but dawn watchers on hilltops inland have also seen many flying overhead. Observers who spent ten hours looking out from Winter Hill in Bolton, Greater Manchester, on Wednesday counted 924 swallows passing over (as well as 463 house martins, 39 buzzards and five hobbies). These figures must include birds from countries further north. However, many British swallows are still bringing up their last brood of the year in the rafters of barns and outhouses. The birders who sailed out from Penzance to St Mary’s, Scilly, on Tuesday afternoon, in the hope of seeing the rare American cliff swallow that was flying about there, achieved their aim. The bird was there when they arrived, and was still there, sitting on roadside wires, yesterday morning. It is like a house martin with a red face.
