United Kingdom withdrawal from the European Union, often shortened to Brexit (short for British exit) is a political aim of some political parties, advocacy groups, and individuals in the United Kingdom (UK) for the country to leave the European Union (EU). In 1975 a referendum was held on the country's membership of the European Economic Community (EEC), a precursor to the EU. The outcome of the vote was that the country continued to be a member of the EEC. More recently the European Union Referendum Act 2015 has been passed to allow for a referendum on the country's membership of the EU, with a vote due to be held before the end of 2017.
The United Kingdom joined the EEC, commonly referred to as the Common Market in the UK, on 1 January 1973. This was done under the Conservative government of Edward Heath. The opposition Labour Party, led by Harold Wilson, contested the October 1974 general election with a commitment to renegotiate Britain's terms of membership of the EEC and then hold a referendum on whether to remain in the EEC on the new terms.

British Prime Minister Theresa May will trigger the divorce process from the European Union by the end of March, firing the starting gun on the country's biggest shift in policy since World War Two. May, appointed prime minister shortly after Britain voted in June to leave the bloc, has been under pressure from EU officials, investors and members of her Conservative Party to offer more on her plan for Britain's exit, beyond her catch phrase "Brexit means Brexit". In an interview with the BBC, … READ MORE : http://www.euronews.com/2016/10/02/british-prime-minister-theresa-may-says-legal-procedure-to-start-brexit-will-be What are the top stories today? Breaking up is hard to do, but UK prime minister Theresa May has announced a March 2017 deadline to start the process of leaving the EU. It is the first major decision made on Brexit since May came to power, and should appease her own party as well as EU countries who are keen to get the ball rolling. "Now that they know what our timing is going to be, it's not an exact date but they know it's going to be in the first quarter of next year, that we'll be able to have some preparatory work so th… READ MORE : http://www.euronews.com/2016/10/02/british-prime-minister-theresa-may-says-legal-procedure-to-start-brexit-will-be What are the top stories today? Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs speaks during the Global Britain session of Conservative Party Conference Watch Boris Johnson's conference speech Boris Johnson mistakenly referred to Africa as a country while reflecting on his three months as foreign secretary. In his speech at the Conservative Party conference, Johnson talked about Britain's "irresistible soft power" while saying the EU referendum was "a vote for economic and political freedom." He name-checked JK Rowling for her international popularity and praised the BBC, saying the broadcaster "is the single greatest and most effective ambassador for our culture and our values." Johnson said with 2% of its GDP spent on defence the UK would be the leading military player in western Europe for the foreseeabl...
A leading lawyer has suggested the government is worried it will lose a vote on Brexit in parliament, and suggests the Queen could be called in to break the deadlock. Mark Stephens says the royal prerogative could provide an alternative if MPs decide to ignore the result of the referendum on June 23. A case will be heard on 13th October about whether Parliament needs to be consulted before triggering Article 50 and repealing the European Communities Act 1972. The government has been forced to put forward legal arguments about why Article 50 can be triggered without Parliamentary consent ahead of he case. Stephens, a partner at law firm Howard Kennedy, told Julia Hartley-Brewer the court will consider "the proper constitutional process" for Brexit, adding: "The government are worried the...
Theresa May slams MPs plotting to block Brexit and promises to rein in immigration Theresa May blamed Brexit rivals for 'offending the knowledge of the British individuals' today as she said we will leave the EU by April 2019 at the most recent. The Prime Minister likewise set out the gauntlet to Brussels for the approaching transactions over the single business sector, clarifying that control over migration is a red line. The uncompromising discourse came as she uncovered that Article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty - the formal two-year system for stopping the EU - will be activated by March. BREXIT THE MOVIE is a feature-length documentary film to inspire as many people as possible to vote to LEAVE the EU in the June 23rd referendum. BREXIT THE MOVIE spells out the danger of staying part of the EU. Is it safe to give a remote government beyond our control the power to make laws? Is it safe to tie ourselves to countries which are close to financial ruin, drifting towards scary political extremism, and suffering long-term, self-inflicted economic decline? BREXIT THE MOVIE shows a side of the EU they don't want us to see: the sprawling self-serving bureaucracy, the political cynicism, the lack of accountability, the perks, the waste, the cronyism, the corruption. BREXIT THE MOVIE cuts through the patronizing intellectualism of the noble, higher goals of 'Project Europe', to re...

Re-elected leader of the Labour Party Jeremy Corbyn has said parliament must be fully informed on Brexit negotiations. Speaking to Andrew Marr at the Labour Party Conference in Liverpool, he said: "I don't think it's democratic and I don't think it's sustainable at all."
