Family is everything in Netflix’s new Selena bio-series. In the show, which launched last week, Selena is constantly surrounded by her Quintanilla clan, members of whom comprise both her band and her management team.
Interestingly, the actress playing Selena’s mother this time around—Seidy López—is no stranger to the Selena story, having appeared as Selena’s friend Deborah in the 1997 adaptation of the singer’s story. This time around, though, she’s clad in ‘80s and ‘90s mom fashions—big sweatshirts and big glasses—while Selena’s band Los Dinos sweat it out in pompadour hairdos and black and green velvet suits.
The A.V. Club talked to López and Noemí Gonzalez, who plays sister Suzette in the show, about those looks, the original Selena film, and the test Gonzalez uses to tell if someone’s a real Selena fan.

Seidy López
Seidy López is a Mexican-American actress and director.
López is best known for her starring debut in the critically acclaimed film Mi Vida Loca. She appeared in Solo, the hit film Selena, an episode of ER directed by Quentin Tarantino, and in Showtime's Resurrection Boulevard. López co-starred in Luminarias and The Elián González Story for the Fox Family Channel, and starred in Blink of an Eye. She also recently directed her first film, American Born, which is in post-production.
Early life
Seidy López was born in Mérida, Yucatán, Mexico. At the age of four, she and her family moved to the United States in search of a more rewarding life. When she turned ten, her parents found it necessary to return to Yucatán with their three children in order to learn how to properly read, write and speak the Spanish language. The López family returned to the States two years later with their children completely bilingual.
Career
Seidy's experience as a performer began at age 12 when she formed a singing group called "Sensation". The group won several talent competitions in Los Angeles. At the age of 14 she decided to focus on her vocal skills, and with the help of her Jr. High teacher, Mr. Gleason, she auditioned for the Los Angeles County High School for the Arts at California State University. As a member of their vocal ensemble, Seidy was given the opportunity to perform in such prestigious venues as the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion. The following year at Hollywood High School of the Performing Arts, Seidy discovered theater and focused her attention on acting. At the age of seventeen Seidy also became a member of an educational theater troupe called "Project Able". The theater troupe toured venues throughout California, including jails and juvenile halls, teaching AIDS education.

Family is everything in Netflix’s new Selena bio-series. In the show, which launched last week, Selena is constantly surrounded by her Quintanilla clan, members of whom comprise both her band and her management team.
Interestingly, the actress playing Selena’s mother this time around—Seidy López—is no stranger to the Selena story, having appeared as Selena’s friend Deborah in the 1997 adaptation of the singer’s story. This time around, though, she’s clad in ‘80s and ‘90s mom fashions—big sweatshirts and big glasses—while Selena’s band Los Dinos sweat it out in pompadour hairdos and black and green velvet suits.
The A.V. Club talked to López and Noemí Gonzalez, who plays sister Suzette in the show, about those looks, the original Selena film, and the test Gonzalez uses to tell if someone’s a real Selena fan.

Before she became the Queen of Tejano Music, Selena Quintanilla was a young girl from Texas with big dreams and an even bigger voice. The two-part coming-of-age drama Selena: The Series explores the once-in-a-generation performer's journey as a young artist, from singing small gigs in Corpus Christi with her family to becoming one of the most successful Latin artists of all time — and the years of grit and sacrifice the Quintanilla family navigated together before Selena's meteoric rise to fame.

Seidy López
Seidy López is a Mexican-American actress and director.
López is best known for her starring debut in the critically acclaimed film Mi Vida Loca. She appeared in Solo, the hit film Selena, an episode of ER directed by Quentin Tarantino, and in Showtime's Resurrection Boulevard. López co-starred in Luminarias and The Elián González Story for the Fox Family Channel, and starred in Blink of an Eye. She also recently directed her first film, American Born, which is in post-production.
Early life
Seidy López was born in Mérida, Yucatán, Mexico. At the age of four, she and her family moved to the United States in search of a more rewarding life. When she turned ten, her parents found it necessary to return to Yucatán with their three children in order to learn how to properly read, write and speak the Spanish language. The López family returned to the States two years later with their children completely bilingual.
Career
Seidy's experience as a performer began at age 12 when she formed a singing group called "Sensation". The group won several talent competitions in Los Angeles. At the age of 14 she decided to focus on her vocal skills, and with the help of her Jr. High teacher, Mr. Gleason, she auditioned for the Los Angeles County High School for the Arts at California State University. As a member of their vocal ensemble, Seidy was given the opportunity to perform in such prestigious venues as the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion. The following year at Hollywood High School of the Performing Arts, Seidy discovered theater and focused her attention on acting. At the age of seventeen Seidy also became a member of an educational theater troupe called "Project Able". The theater troupe toured venues throughout California, including jails and juvenile halls, teaching AIDS education.
