Children tortured in detention – Brutal system exposed
The image is now seared into the public consciousness. A boy in detention in the Northern Territory strapped into a chair, his head covered by a hood also tethered to the grim, purpose-built device. The distressing scene was one of many shown on the ABC TV’s Four Corners program, Australia’s Shame, (25-07-2016) which dealt with the issue of the brutalisation of Aboriginal children in NT prisons, the Don Dale Youth Detention Centre in this instance. more ...
Editorial – The struggle against racism and oppression
The Royal Commission into the Northern Territory Juvenile Detention System announced by Malcolm Turnbull last Thursday was condemned as a sham. Since the details of the Royal Commission were released there has been widespread community condemnation of the lack of involvement of Indigenous organisations in the process and its narrow parameters. more ...
Another union busting weapon
Last week the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) raided the offices of the Construction Division of the CFMEU. This is just the most recent of a number of actions taken by the body against the trade union movement. In a media release issued a year ago (July 30, 2015), its chairman Rod Sims said the ACCC was aware of serious allegations and evidence presented to the trade union Royal Commission concerning alleged cartel conduct in the construction industry in Canberra. more ...
Proposed nuclear waste dump
On July 29, members of the CPA protested outside of the South Australian government’s first information session regarding the nuclear waste dump proposed for the state. more ...
Open letter re youth detention
Dear Prime Minister, The Australian union movement welcomes today’s announcement of a Royal Commission into juvenile detention in the Northern Territory. However, having considered the proposed terms of reference, it is clear that more must be done in order to ensure that this is not another redundant report that fails to bring about lasting change. more ...
Rush to whitewash
It is an indication of the cruel dysfunction and collusion at state and federal level of government that the perpetrators of the NT child abuse and torture of juveniles, the NT government, will be involved in the design and administration of the royal commission to investigate it. Perhaps the churches should have designed and administrated the royal commission into their institutions’ sexual abuse of children in their care? more ...
Times of violence and resistance for Latin American journalists
Mexico is the most dangerous country in Latin America for journalists. In 2015 it accounted for one-third of all murders of reporters in the region, and four more journalists have been added to the list so far this year. more ...
Culture & Life – Cold Warriors ride again
Readers of this journal are well aware that, contrary to the propaganda relentlessly churned out by the ideologues of capitalism, the Cold War did not end. The Cold War was a tactic in capitalism’s strategic war against socialism and the world’s working class. That war certainly hasn’t ended, hence neither has the propaganda offensive known as the Cold War. more ...
Quote of the Week
The oppressed are allowed once every few years to decide which particular representatives of the oppressing class are to represent and repress them in parliament.
