The Queensferry Crossing (formerly the Forth Replacement Crossing) is a road bridge under construction in Scotland. It is being built alongside the existing Forth Road Bridge and will carry the M90 motorway across the Firth of Forth between Lothian, at South Queensferry, and Fife, at North Queensferry.
Proposals for a second Forth road crossing were first put forward in the 1990s, but it was not until the discovery of structural issues with the Forth Road Bridge in 2005 that plans were moved forward. The decision to proceed with a replacement bridge was taken at the end of 2007; the following year it was announced that the existing bridge would be retained as a public transport link. The Forth Crossing Act received Royal Assent in January 2011, and construction began in September 2011.
The Queensferry Crossing will be a cable-stayed bridge, with an overall length of 2.7 kilometres (1.7 miles). Around 4 kilometres (2.5 miles) of new connecting roads will be built, including new and upgraded junctions at Ferrytoll in Fife, South Queensferry and Junction 1A on the M9. It will be the third bridge across the Forth at Queensferry, alongside the Forth Road Bridge completed in 1964, and the Forth Bridge completed in 1890. The bridge is due to be complete by 2016. Following a public vote, it was formally named on 26 June 2013.
Crossing may refer to:
A bridge is a structure built to span physical obstacles without closing the way underneath such as a body of water, valley, or road, for the purpose of providing passage over the obstacle. There are many different designs that each serve a particular purpose and apply to different situations. Designs of bridges vary depending on the function of the bridge, the nature of the terrain where the bridge is constructed and anchored, the material used to make it, and the funds available to build it.
The Oxford English Dictionary traces the origin of the word bridge to an Old English word brycg, of the same meaning. The word can be traced directly back to Proto-Indo-European *bʰrēw-. The word for the card game of the same name has a different origin.
The first bridges made by humans were probably spans of cut wooden logs or planks and eventually stones, using a simple support and crossbeam arrangement. Some early Americans used trees or bamboo poles to cross small caverns or wells to get from one place to another. A common form of lashing sticks, logs, and deciduous branches together involved the use of long reeds or other harvested fibers woven together to form a connective rope capable of binding and holding together the materials used in early bridges.
The Forth Road Bridge is a suspension bridge in east central Scotland. The bridge, opened in 1964, spans the Firth of Forth, connecting Edinburgh, at Queensferry, to Fife, at North Queensferry. It replaced a centuries-old ferry service to carry vehicular traffic, cyclists, and pedestrians across the Forth; rail crossings are made by the adjacent and historic Forth Bridge.
Issues regarding the continued tolling of the bridge, and those over its deteriorating condition and proposals to have it replaced or supplemented by an additional crossing, caused it to become something of a political football for the Scottish Parliament, which voted to scrap tolls on the bridge from 11 February 2008.
On 4 December 2015, the bridge was closed to all vehicular traffic, pedestrians and cyclists due to structural issues. The bridge reopened to all traffic except heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) on 23 December 2015, and is expected to reopen to HGVs around mid-February 2016.
The first crossing at what is now the site of the bridge was established in the 11th century by Margaret, queen consort of King Malcolm III, who founded a ferry service to transport religious pilgrims from Edinburgh to Dunfermline Abbey and St Andrews. Its creation gave rise to the port towns of Queensferry and North Queensferry, which remain to this day; and the service remained in uninterrupted use as a passenger ferry for over eight hundred years. As early as the 1740s there were proposals for a road crossing at the site, although their viability was only considered following the construction of the Forth Bridge in 1890.

The Scottish capital of Edinburgh is one of the world’s most beautiful cities. Its Old Town and Royal Mile are filled with the ghosts of medieval merchants, body snatchers, and poets, while its Georgian-styled New Town shines with the glories of the Scottish Enlightenment. To see Edinburgh in all her glory, climb to Arthur’s Seat, the highest of the city’s seven peaks. Some historians believe this was the site of King Arthur’s legendary castle Camelot. Nearby, on another volcanic crag, rises Edinburgh Castle, the very symbol of Scotland itself. Over the last eleven centuries, this castle has been laid siege to 26 times but still it stands, a testimony to the indomitable spirit of the Scots. Edinburgh has long held a special place in the hearts of the monarchy. Her Majesty’s Yacht Br...

This is a travel video documenting the crazy Loony Dook Event Festival held at Queensferry - Edinburgh, Scotland to celebrate 2014. This Hogmanay celebration involved people dressing up in crazy costumes parading out to the freezing cold water to splash around and have a swim. From Little Red Riding Hood to the man wrapped in bubble tape there were many creative and crazy costumes. One of the funniest costumes was a mankini worn by a tanned and very fit man thrusting his pelvis. Overall it was an incredible event. Well, here we go guys because this one is a long one! Starting in the house, I go over the plan of action (well, half a plan but whatever) before getting shuteye for the earliest start I've ever done. We get off to a bit of a shaky start at Pollokshaws West after the 0557 train showed up more than 15 minutes late due to signalling problems (thank you ScotFail!). Despite this, it doesn't impact my plan too badly as I get the 0650 Virgin Trains East Coast service to Edinburgh Waverley via Carstairs. I did plan to meet Kyle (class318256) on the 0650 but he slept in and got a later train into Edinburgh. After arriving at Edinburgh, I buy my tickets for my three planned stations before getting 170417 to South Gyle. Halfway into my hour-long session, I meet Kyle (who actually managed to get...
