Robert Howard "Clifton" Young (September 15, 1917 – September 10, 1951) was an American film actor.
Born Robert H. Young, the child actor played "Bonedust" in nineteen Our Gang films from 1925 to 1931, his most notable film being School's Out. As an adult, to avoid confusion with established star Robert Young, he took his mother's maiden name, Clifton (Eva Clifton) as his screen name.
Young became a contract player at Warner Bros., landing small parts in a number of 1940s film noir and western films. Notable credits include Nora Prentiss, Pursued, Possessed, Dark Passage, and Blood on the Moon.
While at Warners Young was featured prominently in the Joe McDoakes comedy shorts. He played a variety of roles: a craven mobster in So You Want to Be a Detective, a department-store clerk in So You're Going on Vacation, and memorably as "Homer," Joe's brash, know-it-all office colleague in several McDoakes reels. Young often displayed excellent comedy timing in these films.
One of Young's last films was the Roy Rogers western Trail of Robin Hood, in which he played a sneering villain.
William Robert "Will" Young (born 20 January 1979) is an English singer-songwriter and actor who came to prominence after winning the 2002 inaugural series of the British music contest Pop Idol, making him the first winner of the worldwide Idol franchise. His debut single "Anything Is Possible" was released two weeks after the show's finale and became the fastest-selling debut single in the UK. Young also came in fifth place in World Idol performing his single "Light My Fire".
As a teenager, Young studied politics at the University of Exeter before moving to London, where he studied musical theatre at Arts Educational School. Young put his studies on hold in late 2001 to become a contestant on Pop Idol. After winning the competition the following year, he released his debut album From Now On (2002) which went straight to number one. Friday's Child (2003) followed and enjoyed greater success, eventually going platinum five times in the UK and spawning three top five singles. His following albums Keep On (2005) and Let It Go (2008) and Echoes (2011) also went multi-platinum and his most recent release 85% Proof (2015) became his fourth UK number-one album. His albums have spawned many songs that have accomplished top ten positions in the UK, four of which went to the number one spot. Young has also undertaken numerous concert tours. He has also accumulated multiple honours, including two BRIT Awards from 12 nominations, and the estimated worldwide sale of over eight million albums. Young's net worth was estimated at £13.5 million in April 2012.
Karen Clifton (formerly Hauer; born 20 April 1982) is a Venezuelan professional Latin dance specialist and World Mambo Champion known for her appearances on the British TV series Strictly Come Dancing and the American TV series So You Think You Can Dance. She has also featured on Burn the Floor.
She participated in season 6 of So You Think You Can Dance and subsequently joined Strictly Come Dancing as a professional dancer.
In 2009, as Karen Hauer she auditioned for season 6 of the US reality show So You Think You Can Dance.
She originally auditioned with her husband at the time, Matthew Hauer, but Matthew was eliminated during Vegas week and Karen moved on to the top 20.
As Karen Hauer she joined Strictly Come Dancing for series 10 partnering Nicky Byrne. They made it to week 10, the quarter-finals, before losing a dance-off to Denise van Outen and her partner James Jordan. Hauer returned for series 11 to partner Dave Myers, and they were voted out of the competition on 10 November, in week 7. In series 12, she was partnered by Mark Wright, and they were voted out in week 13, coming in 4th place. In series 13, she was paired up with BBC Radio 2 presenter Jeremy Vine.
Strictly Come Dancing (informally known as Strictly) is a British television show, featuring celebrities with professional dance partners competing in a Ballroom and Latin dance competition. Each couple is scored out of 10 by a panel of judges. The title of the show suggests a continuation of the long-running series Come Dancing, with an allusion to the film Strictly Ballroom. The format has been exported to over 40 other countries (see Dancing with the Stars), and has also inspired a modern-dance themed spin-off Strictly Dance Fever. The show is currently presented by Tess Daly and Claudia Winkleman.
The show has run on BBC One since 15 May 2004, primarily on Saturday evenings with a following Sunday night results show (with certain exceptions). The thirteenth series ended on 19 December 2015. a further eleven stand-alone Christmas specials have also been produced, in consecutive years from 2004 to 2014. Nine charity specials have also been produced since 2008. Since the fourth series, the show has also been aired in high definition on BBC HD, and BBC One HD from series 8.
Come Dancing was a British ballroom dancing competition show that ran on and off on the BBC from 1949 to 1998, becoming one of television's longest-running shows.
The show was created by Eric Morley, the founder of Miss World, and began in 1949 by broadcasting from regional ballroom studios, with professional dancers Syd Perkin and Edna Duffield on hand to offer teaching.
In 1953 the format changed to become a competition, with later series seeing regions of the United Kingdom going head to head for the coveted trophy.
The many presenters over the years included Peter West, McDonald Hobley, Charles Nove, Terry Wogan, Brian Johnston, Angela Rippon, Michael Aspel, Noel Edmonds, David Jacobs, Judith Chalmers, Pete Murray, and Rosemarie Ford. Commentators included Ray Moore and Bruce Hammal.
In 2004, a re-launched celebrity version entitled Strictly Come Dancing, hosted by Bruce Forsyth (2004–13), Tess Daly and Claudia Winkleman (2014–) debuted on BBC One, and became a popular hit on Saturday evenings. The title is a nonsensical pastiche of the titles of both the 1992 Australian film Strictly Ballroom and Come Dancing. The format of the newer show has been successfully exported to other countries under the name Dancing with the Stars.
