Canada is the fifth-largest producer of oil in the world. But when the price of oil plummeted in late 2014, the country’s oil-rich western province of Alberta began hurtling toward a recession, with widespread layoffs and historic reductions in drilling activity.
The impact was felt across Canada, too. Crude oil is the country’s number one export, and 99 percent of it is sold to the United States. But in recent years, the US has emerged as a major oil producer in its own right, following a revolution in controversial fracking technology that has increased US oil production and contributed to a global oversupply of oil. Now, Canada's energy sector faces the difficult question of how to meet new markets in a changing global energy landscape.
VICE News visited Alberta, known as Canada’s “Texas of the North," in what is normally high season for drilling — just before the frozen ground thaws — to explore how the bitter sting of low oil prices is affecting the region’s the economy.
In this excerpt, VICE News speaks with the Canadian Association of Oil Drilling Contractors to hear how oil and gas exploration is slowing down, and meets the CEO of a small oil and gas company who is keeping drills in operation on his site, despite the declining oil prices.

Roughly three hours from Calgary and Edmonton and in the foothills above Rocky Mountain House and Caroline, Pepper's Lake is a pretty spot to trout fish Alberta on the edge of the Canadian Rockies. We came to pitch Pautzke salmon eggs in the evening and caught piles of pan size brook trout.
Floating salmon eggs enabled us to drift above the weed line in search of feeding trout. We soaked Orange Deluxe and Yellow Jacket salmon eggs (three per hook) exclusively and caught an endless number of fish while filming Pautzke Outdoors.
Catching trout normally isn’t a chore. The Alberta Fish & Wildlife keeps the lake well stocked. If you’re going to fish from the bank, the area adjacent to the campground provides the easiest and best access to the fish. Anywhere you can walk down to the bank affords the opportunity to catch brookies. The best spot is at the end of the campground, on a dirt area near a bench (you can’t miss it).
The lake is managed as a put-and-take fishery, meaning there are no bait restrictions and anglers may keep five brook trout. Brookies are the only species available. Peppers doesn’t normally yield large brookies. Although rumors swirl of 14-16 inch fish, we found most to be 10-12, which is still a blast on light tackle.

Extraction of the oil and refining it destroys countless miles of forestland and requires enormous amounts of energy and water. Tar sands oil production creates 2 to 3 times as much greenhouse gas as production of conventional oil hence the contribution to global warming. Enormous machinery is used to remove trees, rocks, soil and sand from the earth and once the tar sands are removed, the resulting huge holes in the ground remain along with the toxic water-borne tailings. As a world together, we have to make the right decisions about the extraction and use of Alberta's immense oil resource.

Alberta
Alberta (/ælˈbɜːrtə/) is a western province of Canada. With an estimated population of 4,196,457 as of July 1, 2015, it is Canada's fourth-most populous province and the most populous of Canada's three prairie provinces. Alberta and its neighbour Saskatchewan were districts of the Northwest Territories until they were established as provinces on September 1, 1905. The premier has been Rachel Notley since May 2015.
Alberta is bounded by the provinces of British Columbia to the west and Saskatchewan to the east, the Northwest Territories to the north, and the US state of Montana to the south. Alberta is one of three Canadian provinces and territories to border only a single US state and one of only two landlocked provinces. It has a predominantly Humid continental climate, but seasonal temperature average swings are smaller than to areas further east, with winters being warmed by occasional chinook winds bringing sudden warming which moderates average temperatures.
Alberta's capital Edmonton is near the geographic centre of the province and is the primary supply and service hub for Canada's crude oil, oil sands (Athabasca oil sands) and other northern resource industries.

Canada is the fifth-largest producer of oil in the world. But when the price of oil plummeted in late 2014, the country’s oil-rich western province of Alberta began hurtling toward a recession, with widespread layoffs and historic reductions in drilling activity.
The impact was felt across Canada, too. Crude oil is the country’s number one export, and 99 percent of it is sold to the United States. But in recent years, the US has emerged as a major oil producer in its own right, following a revolution in controversial fracking technology that has increased US oil production and contributed to a global oversupply of oil. Now, Canada's energy sector faces the difficult question of how to meet new markets in a changing global energy landscape.
VICE News visited Alberta, known as Canada’s “Texas of the North," in what is normally high season for drilling — just before the frozen ground thaws — to explore how the bitter sting of low oil prices is affecting the region’s the economy.
In this excerpt, VICE News speaks with the Canadian Association of Oil Drilling Contractors to hear how oil and gas exploration is slowing down, and meets the CEO of a small oil and gas company who is keeping drills in operation on his site, despite the declining oil prices.

Roughly three hours from Calgary and Edmonton and in the foothills above Rocky Mountain House and Caroline, Pepper's Lake is a pretty spot to trout fish Alberta on the edge of the Canadian Rockies. We came to pitch Pautzke salmon eggs in the evening and caught piles of pan size brook trout.
Floating salmon eggs enabled us to drift above the weed line in search of feeding trout. We soaked Orange Deluxe and Yellow Jacket salmon eggs (three per hook) exclusively and caught an endless number of fish while filming Pautzke Outdoors.
Catching trout normally isn’t a chore. The Alberta Fish & Wildlife keeps the lake well stocked. If you’re going to fish from the bank, the area adjacent to the campground provides the easiest and best access to the fish. Anywhere you can walk down to the bank affords the opportunity to catch brookies. The best spot is at the end of the campground, on a dirt area near a bench (you can’t miss it).
The lake is managed as a put-and-take fishery, meaning there are no bait restrictions and anglers may keep five brook trout. Brookies are the only species available. Peppers doesn’t normally yield large brookies. Although rumors swirl of 14-16 inch fish, we found most to be 10-12, which is still a blast on light tackle.

Enormous machinery is used to remove trees, rocks, soil and sand from the earth and once the tar sands are removed, the resulting huge holes in the ground remain along with the toxic water-borne tailings. As a world together, we have to make the right decisions about the extraction and use of Alberta's immense oil resource.

These are my carefully selected top 10 travel tips for Calgary & Alberta and includes the best places in Banff and things to do ranging from the most famous hot dog, a helicopter ride with Rockies Heli Tours to the most beautiful place in Canada called Lake Louise.
I decided to visit my friends from Holland who were exploring the Canadian Rockies with their RV, before chasing them down in Banff I treated myself on the most famous hot dog in Canada at Tubby Dog and tried to break the glass floor at the Calgary Tower.

It was such a memorable experience meeting my Dutch friends on the other side of the world so we decided to do it up proper with a family BBQ and a few local brewski's, namely the Powder Hound by The Grizzly Paw which is a local brewery in Canmore, Alberta.
On our first adventure we left in the early morning to take the Banff Gondola to Sulphur Mountain, one of the most mesmerizing views of Banff. Make sure to fill up prior on a classic Canadian breakfast at Tim Hortons, the Canadian way.
The next adventure was a private helicopter ride at Rockies Heli Canada who took us from Kananaskis through the Rocky Mountains. It was a gorgeous clear day which resulted in excellent video footage. We even saw the same river where they shot the movie: The Revenant.
What also amazed us were the buck loads of wildlife passing by the RV throughout our stay at Banff's tunnel mountain campgrounds.
In next week's article I will give you all the details on our adventure at Lake Louise were I completed an 11 hour, 20 kilometer hike, thus best is to relax and relieve your sore muscles at Banff Upper Hot Springs after that trip.
In conclusion we were very fortunate that we had excellent weather with blue skies the entire trip. I highly recommend visiting Calgary, Banff & Lake Louise in the first week of June for the best experience.

There are a number of popular mountains located immediately adjacent to the townsite which include Mount Rundle (2,949 m or 9,675 ft); Cascade Mountain (2,998 m or 9,836 ft); and Mount Norquay (2,134 m or 7,001 ft). Mount Norquay has a ski slope as well as mountain biking trails on the Stoney Squaw portion. A popular tourist attraction, the Banff Gondola, is available to ascend Sulphur Mountain (2,281 m or 7,484 ft) where a boardwalk (Banff Skywalk) beginning from the upper terminal takes visitors to Sanson Peak. Sulphur Mountain is also the location of one of Banff's most popular attractions, the Banff Upper Hot Springs.
Lake Minnewanka located 6 minutes north of the townsite is a very popular day use area with a variety of activities. Mountain biking, hiking and fishing are all activities allowed in this part of the park. There is a very popular Lake Cruise and motor boat rentals and a small food concession available at the marina.
Tunnel Mountain (formerly known as Sleeping Buffalo Mountain) (1,690 m or 5,545 ft) is situated within the townsite and is very popular for quick hikes; one can reach the summit in less than half an hour. It was named Tunnel Mountain because surveyors initially wanted to make a tunnel for the Canadian Pacific Railway right through the mountain, instead of following the Bow River Valley.
Banff is home to the well-known Banff World Television Festival, Banff Mountain Film Festival, Rocky Mountain Music Festival and Bike Fest. The city is also the starting point of the 4,417 km (2,745 mi) Great Divide Mountain Bike Route, which terminates at Antelope Wells, New Mexico in the United States.

On May 14, 1914, wet natural gas sprayed out of the well bore at the Calgary Petroleum Products No. 1 Well. This discovery of petroleum led to the development of Alberta's first natural gas processing plant and changed the province forever. Located 60 km south of Calgary, the Turner Valley Gas Plant is a tangible symbol of the development of the Turner Valley Oilfield, western Canada’s first commercial petroleum producer. Hockey Alberta's New Visual Identity
On Thursday, August 18, 2016, Hockey Alberta unveiled its new visual identity. Alberta is represented through the use of the official gold and blue colours of the province; a stylized letter ‘A’ that also forms the profile of a net; and the inclusion of the Alberta wordmark at the base of the logo. In addition to the profile of the net, hockey is represented by the silhouette of a player. The player reflects Hockey Alberta’s new Mission statement (adopted in 2015) which focuses on ensuring that all players have the opportunity to participate and enjoy the sport, as well as Hockey Alberta’s status as a member of Hockey Canada.

Alberta is represented through the use of the official gold and blue colours of the province; a stylized letter ‘A’ that also forms the profile of a net; and the inclusion of the Alberta wordmark at the base of the logo. In addition to the profile of the net, hockey is represented by the silhouette of a player. The player reflects Hockey Alberta’s new Mission statement (adopted in 2015) which focuses on ensuring that all players have the opportunity to participate and enjoy the sport, as well as Hockey Alberta’s status as a member of Hockey Canada.

On Sunday, June 1, we celebrated our Convocation for 158 graduates of the University of Alberta's Augustana Campus. The day started with a Worship Service, continued through a lunch honouring Augustana's Medal Winners, then moved into the Gymnasium for the Convocation itself. Our newly-minted graduates paused for a Class Photo and planted their 2014 Grad Class Tree, then visited with friends and family during the Alumni Tea before posing for photos around campus.
