Washington: US Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton told the FBI she did not recall all of the briefings she received on handling sensitive information as she made the transition from her post as secretary of state due to a concussion she suffered in 2012, according to a report released on Friday.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation released a summary of the July 2 interview they conducted with Mrs Clinton, as well as other details of their investigation into her use of a private email server while heading the State Department.

Clinton email probe: FBI releases files

Hillary Clinton tells FBI she could not recall all briefings on preserving documents due to a concussion she suffered at the time.

Mrs Clinton, who is challenging Republican Donald Trump for the White House in the November 8 election, has been dogged by the fallout from her private email account for more than a year.

Republicans have repeatedly hammered Mrs Clinton over the issue, helping drive opinion polls that show many US voters doubt her trustworthiness.

The new files will provide Mr Trump and the Republicans more ammunition to attack Mrs Clinton's judgment and honesty.

Mrs Clinton told the FBI that, in hindsight, she regretted using a private email system while secretary of state.

The document summarising the interview in July, known in the FBI as a 302 report, runs to only a dozen pages despite the interview lasting more than tree hours.

The memorandum is lengthier, and goes into greater detail about aspects of the case. The materials were presumably provided to James B. Comey, the FBI director, who later decided to not recommend charges in the case.

A senior law enforcement official said the interview at FBI headquarters had been intended "to fill the gaps" of what the FBI did not know about why Mrs Clinton decided to use a private email server.

Both documents were partially redacted, which had slowed their release as the bureau sought to protect sensitive information while satisfying the public's right to know.

The documents offer the most detailed account of Mrs Clinton's role from the bureau's yearlong investigation into whether the former secretary of state or her aides broke the law by using a private system – clintonemail.com – to send tens of thousands of emails about government business, including classified matters.
