Graham Arthur Chapman (8 January 1941 – 4 October 1989) was an English comedian, writer, actor, and one of the six members of the surreal comedy group Monty Python. He played authority figures such as the Colonel and the lead role in two Python films, Holy Grail and Life of Brian.
Chapman was born in Leicester and was raised in Melton Mowbray. He enjoyed science, acting and comedy, and after graduating from Emmanuel College, Cambridge and St Bartholomew's Medical College, he turned down a career as a doctor to be a comedian. Chapman established a writing partnership with John Cleese, which reached its critical peak with Monty Python during the 1970s. Chapman left Britain for Los Angeles in the late 1970s, where he attempted to be a success on American television, speaking on the college circuit and producing the pirate film Yellowbeard, before returning to Britain in the early 1980s.
Chapman was openly homosexual and a strong supporter of gay rights, and was in a relationship with David Sherlock for most of his adult life. He suffered from alcoholism during his time at Cambridge and the early Python years, quitting shortly before working on Life of Brian. Chapman died of tonsil and spinal cancer on 4 October 1989, on the eve of Monty Python's 20th anniversary, and his life and legacy were commemorated at a private memorial service at St Bartholomew's with the other Pythons.

Plot: In 1979 the Monty Python comedy team return from making their film 'Monty Python's Life of Brian' in Tunisia. Premiered in America the film is pilloried by ultra-right religious groups for its depiction of Christ. In England the Popular Peoples' Church of St Sophia (whose members include a Tourette's sufferer who shouts out swear words) find a copy of the script in a dustbin and lobby the British censor for its suppression, leading to many local councils banning its screening. Death threats follow and Michael Palin - "the nicest man in Britain" - has his effigy burned on his front lawn. Finally crazed TV programmer Alan Dick persuades Palin and co-star John Cleese to defend the picture on a late night chat show against the Bishop of Southwark and religious commentator Malcolm Muggeridge. Thanks to Cleese's reasoning the Pythons are seen to triumph, winning over the Popular Peoples' Church. A later encounter with God will show how the film's controversy paved the way for other artistic endeavours which prompted protest. Brilliant characterisations are vitiated by a satirical 'treatment' including animated sequences and irritating attempts at surreal wit when a documentary style treatment would have sufficed. Several of the Pythons were hostile to the film, summed up in the floor manager's comment. "Another fantasy sequence...lame".

Graham Chapman talks about his new movie Yellowbeard, Marty Feldman and Keith Moon (The Who's drummer inspired him to create a pirate story just like Johnny Depp based his Jack Sparrow character on Keith Richards of the Rolling Stones - seems like all rockers called Keith are pirates).

Monty Python's Graham Chapman worked Laughs Unlimited for one special night in the 1980's shortly before his death. This is a rare interview he did during his visit. Comedian Jack Gallagher is on hand to chat with Graham.

The regional news program "Look North" from 23 May 1973 featured a news report from the Monty Python team as they were touring around the country with the Monty Python stage show. The report features Graham Chapman, Michael Palin and Terry Jones. Interestingly the clip starts with what looks like an earlier interview on the set of the "Hermits" sketch from 1969 with John Cleese and featuring the other Pythons, including Graham Chapman in character as The Colonel.
GRAHAM CHAPMAN INTERVIEW EXCLUSIVE VIDEO! Graham Chapman of the famed Monty Python comedy troupe came to Illinois State University as part of his solo stand-up comedy tour.
