Sérgio Moro

Sérgio Fernando Moro (1972) is a Brazilian federal judge who has gained national fame for commanding and ordaining the judicial law case of the crimes identified in the criminal investigation nicknamed as Operação Lava Jato (Operation Carwash, in English), a case of high-profile scandals of corruption and bribery by government officials. Sérgio Moro graduated his bachelor in Law in the Maringa State University, and became a federal judge in 1996. He has also studied abroad in an exchange program in Harvard Law School in 1998. He has been awarded a Master's Degree and a PhD in the Paraná State University. Currently, he acts as a Federal Judge in high-profile cases, gives classes on law and commands the Operation Carwash.

Besides having worked in the Operation Carwash, he has also coordinated the criminal case "Banestado", which has resulted in the prosecution of 97 individuals, and the Operation "Farol da Colina", one in which he decreed the preventive arrest of 103 suspects of comitting money laundering, tax evasion and other crimes. Among the arrested has been Alberto Youssef. He has also acted on the Mensalão scandal. Moro is married and has two children.

Delcídio do Amaral

Delcídio do Amaral (born February 2, 1955) is a Brazilian politician. He has represented Mato Grosso do Sul in the Federal Senate since 2003. He is a member of the Workers' Party. He represents the ruling Worker's Party in the Senate and is the head of the Senate's economic affairs committee. Amaral was arrested in November 2015 for allegedly taking kickbacks from Petrobras.

Jô Soares

José Eugênio Soares, best known as Jô Soares (born January 16, 1938 in Rio de Janeiro) is a Brazilian comedian, talk show host, author, theatrical producer, director, actor, painter and musician.

Soares was born in Rio de Janeiro. After being educated in Switzerland and the United States, Soares returned to Rio and worked at TV Rio in 1958, writing and performing in comedy shows for the station. He acted as an American in Carlos Manga's O Homem do Sputnik. In 1970, Soares started working at Rede Globo.

In 1988, Soares moved to SBT, where he hosted a talk-show, Jô Soares Onze e Meia ("Jô Soares Eleven Thirty"), until 1999. In 2000, Soares took his show's format (very similar to David Letterman's) back to Rede Globo, where it was then called Programa do Jô, and hosts the program until the present day.

His first novel O Xangô de Baker Street was written in 1995 and has already been published in several other countries; it was made into a film in 2000. He has put out various jazz CDs. He has also produced many plays including a recent version of Richard III.

Operação Lava Jato

Operação Lava Jato (English: Operation Car Wash) is an investigation being carried out by the Federal Police of Brazil, Curitiba Branch, and judicially commanded by Judge Sérgio Moro since March 17, 2014. Initially a money laundering investigation, it has expanded to cover allegations of corruption at the state-controlled oil company Petrobras, where it is alleged that executives accepted bribes in return for awarding contracts to construction firms at inflated prices. This criminal "system" is known as "Petrolão". The operation has included the enforcement of more than a hundred warrants for search and seizure, temporary and preventive detention and coercive measures, with the aim of ascertaining a money laundering scheme suspected of moving more than 10 Billion Brazilian Reais (approx. USD 3.5 Billion @ 2.84 BRL / 1 USD, as of March 2, 2015).

Synopsis

The operation was coined as such due to the use of a currency exchange and money transfer service at the Posto da Torre (Tower Gas Station) in Brasilia by the accused ring to move the money acquired by illicit means. The initial accusation came from the businessman Hermes Magnus, in 2008, when the accused group attempted to launder money through his company (Dunel Indústria e Comércio), a manufacturer of electronic components. Investigative measures were taken following the initial accusations, which culminated in the identification of four large criminal rings, headed by Carlos Habib Chater, Alberto Youssef, Nelma Mitsue Penasso Kodama and Raul Henrique Srour.
