Belgian fries (frites Belges) - Belgian Cuisine
Belgium is to fries what England is to fried fish. Dunked in mayonnaise, these potato bites are always a treat. It's useful to use an electric deep fryer with a thermometer so the temperature is regulated, but if you don’t have one a deep saucepan will be fine.

3 large potatoes (try Sebago, Coliban, Golden Delight or Kennebec)
2 litres vegetable oil
sea salt, to taste

Our second stop on our Busabout adventure was in the Belgian city of Bruges. Having recently watched the movie 'In Bruges' starring Colin Farrell we were both eager to see what the city was all about. In the movie Bruges is described as not the most endearing city by Ray: "Ken, I grew up in Dublin. I love Dublin. If I'd grown up on a farm, and was retarded, Bruges might impress me. But I didn't, s

Now that we've found ourselves in Madrid, Spain it was time to sample Churros done the Spanish way. Unlike in Latin America, where stuffed or filled Churros are quite common, the Churros here in Spain are often plain but dunked in hot chocolate. This kind of hot chocolate is unlike a

Frites: Belgian Fries taste test travel video transcript:
So we have a very exciting taste test coming up today. We are in Bruges, Belgium and that means we have to try Belgian fries. Not French fries. So let's get a look at that and then I'm going to give you a bit of the history behind it.
So there is a bit of a heated debate about whether fries or French fries or Belgian fries. Where exactly did they originate? So our tour guide yesterday was telling us that apparently during World War I there were a lot of British and American soldiers who were between Belgium and France and sometimes they didn't know what country they were in. All they knew is that they could hear French being spoken. So they assumed we must be in France and these must be French Fries. And that is how french fries got their name. But the Belgians believe they were the first to invent this dish and therefore it should be called Belgian fries. I don't really care if they are French or Belgian. All I know is that they are delicious. So I'm ready to dig in to my lunch.
Mmmm.
So so good.
Okay, so tell us about the dressings on these Frites. So over here the main dressing is mayonnaise if you can believe it. And check out that enormous. Generous amount of mayo. Enormous portion of mayo.
And then the other sauce that we got over here is curry ketchup. And what is really cool is when you go to these frites stores, these french fry stores you have all different kinds of sauces you can choose from. There is maybe like 20 different kinds. And you have to pay for them but 'hey' it is good.
So let's go in for a bite. Alright, I'm taking a curry ketchup and I am dunking it into the mayonnaise.
Oh, adventurous. Double sauce adventure.
Wow. Yeah, that is like taking french fries to a whole new level.
It is absolutely delicious. And something that is really neat about these fries is that they are a thicker cut then what we are used to having.
Okay, we are really bad for devouring food but I this like breaks a new record. These were done in like what twenty, thirty, forty seconds as opposed to minutes.
It was so good. I'm so sad we finished it so quickly.
But my favorite sauce definitely the curry ketchup. I know that is not traditionally Belgian but I tried it the first time when I had currywurst in Berlin and it is so nice having ketchup with curry and I love it with my fries. So I recommend trying that if you get the chance. Yeah, I have to agree with you but they also taste really good mixed together as well.
Okay, so price point. How much can we expect to pay for these delicious fries? So we got a medium portion and we paid about 3.50 Euros but if you get a large you can expect to pay maybe 4 and if you get a small you can expect to pay about 2.
Another thing to keep in mind is these shops are all over the city. All you have to do is look for the French Fry symbol. On the maps. The maps show you where to get fries.

How could you not try a Belgian waffle while visiting Belgium?
Well, as we found out in Bruges there is actually no such thing as a Belgian waffle; it's entirely a North American 'term' given to differentiate between the types of waffles typically eaten back home. Within Belgium itself it is just purely a waffle.
What makes Belgian waffles different from American waffles? Typically they're larger with lighter batter and larger squares with a grid pattern forming deep pockets. Anyhow, they're delicious and you can have all kinds of different toppings and creams slathered on top.
Whether you're having one for breakfast, lunch, dinner or merely as a snack, be sure to grab one when in Brugge.
Belgian Waffles taste test in Bruges, Belgium Travel Video Transcript:
Waffles! Waffles! We are having waffles!
Well, considering today is our last full day in Belgium we couldn't leave the country without trying at least one Belgian waffle.
And to prove its authenticity it even has a Belgian flag. Why don't you take out that flag and wave it. Come on, go wave it.
Wave the flag?
Wave that flag.
Belgian waffles, dun da da dun da da.
Belgian waffles. dun da da dun dah.
So the funny thing about Belgian waffles is that there is no such thing as Belgian waffles in Belgium.
Sure, in North America we call them Belgium waffles but here they are just regular old waffles.
And that is only because we have crappy waffles. Yes, we have to put them in the toaster. We usually buy them from the frozen section in Canada.
But anyway, what sets these waffles apart is that they are a lot larger, a lot fluffier and the squares are a lot bigger than your average waffles that you buy from the frozen section back in North America. So let's dig in before this starts melting.
First bite. Okay, so we got ours with chocolate sauce and whipped cream.
This is like technically our dinner isn't it?
Oh, wow.
Wow.
Tell me how good that is. That is so good I have no words so I'm just going to take a second bite.
And leave me less?
Mmmm.
I don't even know where to begin. Like, it is amazing.
It is a proper waffle guys with lots of chocolate sauce, lots of whipped cream. Nice and sweet. Yes. Oh. You want a flier?
And what did you just get handed? We've just been invited to a special event tonight. There is some kind of festival and there is going to be a clubbing stage guys. So, we're going to eat our waffle first and then have energy to go clubbing apparently.
Alright, I haven't been left with much but I guess I'll take whatever it is that there is left.
Wow.
Chocolate sauce and whipping cream is a winning combo. And you're right, those are freshly made waffles done properly. How can I eat the stuff back home after this?
So what are the different toppings you can get on these waffles?
Lots of different toppings. You can get strawberries, wild berries. There was icing sugar. Even butter. So I mean there is something for every taste out there.
Pure butter. Yes, but I'm happy with chocolate.
So price point for the waffle? So in terms of this waffle it was 4.50 Euros. Not exactly the cheapest snack but definitely delicious.

Eating delicious Belgian chocolates in Bruges Travel Video Transcript:
So it is time for our last taste test here in Belgium, so we stopped by a chocolate shop to pick up some hand made chocolate. And the Belgians actually used to have a colony in Africa, so that meant cocoa beans, and plenty of time to perfect the art of chocolate making. So that means today they are one of the leading experts in chocolate production, so today is a chocolate taste test. So here are all the chocolates we have purchased. Okay, so time to make your first selection. The neat thing is we got a little assorted goodie bag, so we really don't know what kinds they are, we're just going to try them and see what it is. But I have a feeling this first one I've selected is coffee flavoured. It has a little coffee bean. Yeah, that kind of gives it away. Yeah, start with an easy one, right? Is it coffee? It is. Wow, it's so rich and creamy. Not the healthiest way to start our day, but definitely tasty. Okay, so I have a feeling this one right here is coconut. The shredded coconut kind of gives it away. Mmmm, and it also has a nice creamy feeling. Feeling, filling. A nice creamy filling. Maybe a creamy feeling in your mouth. Mmmmm. That's really good, it's just really rich and milky. It's good chocolate. Alright, I'm going to try what appears to be the first dark chocolate. Ooo, it has a filling! Peppermint. Mint? Oh, I like that, but I don't like dark chocolate so maybe you can have it. Haha, wow, that's a really good peppermint chocolate. Much better than like After Eight or Junior Mints or any of that kind of stuff. Okay, so I'm going for this one. It kind of looks like a little dome. I'm guessing there's filling inside. Aww, I was hoping for strawberry. What is it? Mmm, chocolate fudge in the middle. Still good, I was just hoping for strawberry. You know what wasn't terribly clever on our part? We didn't bring water. Alright I've got a tiny teddy bear shaped chocolate, and teddy you are very cute, but I'm going to eat you. Sorry about that. Okay, oh wow. This has, like, this is the one you wanted. It's got a fruit flavoured jam. Oh my gosh! And you didn't even bite it in half to share. There you go. I win, you lose. That's so sad. So I'm going for a white chocolate. Mmm, I don't know what that is. Can you guess? It's not coffee. Maybe it's praline? Might be praline. Okay, I've got one that's shaped like a leaf now. Mmm, it's all over your lips. It's not mint. Again, I'm not entirely sure what this is. It's got kind of a... Coconut? No, it's not coconut. I would say it's more of a, it's got a bit of a, fruity taste. I'm saying it's going to be peach cream. It's different, but good. So this is going to be my first dark chocolate. I'm usually not a fan, but this one looks really pretty, and it's got the city's main attraction painted in gold. There's the bell tower. Mmm, there's something in it. I think that's marzipan. Probably, I've been noticing a lot of marzipan chocolate around. Ughhhhh. And it has that nasty dried fruit that they put in that Christmas cake. Oh I love that, I love that stuff! It's like old lady candy. So there's just something about European chocolate that sets it apart from any other chocolate I've had elsewhere. Belgian chocolate is no different, and it's absolutely amazing. It's so milky. So creamy. There's so many different flavours. It's going to be hard to have a normal chocolate bar after this. Price point! Okay, so for these handmade chocolates, and we got 9 little chocolates, we paid 3 Euros and 95 cents, which I think is a pretty good price because it was in a touristy part of town, and I mean, these are outstanding chocolates. So keep that in mind and if you're ever in Bruges, get yourself some chocolates.

Belgium is to fries what England is to fried fish. Dunked in mayonnaise, these potato bites are always a treat. It's useful to use an electric deep fryer with a thermometer so the temperature is regulated, but if you don’t have one a deep saucepan will be fine.
Ingredients
3 large potatoes (try Sebago, Coliban, Golden Delight or Kennebec)
2 litres vegetable oil
sea salt, to taste
60 g (¼ cup) quality mayonnaise
Cook's notes
Oven temperatures are for conventional; if using fan-forced (convection), reduce the temperature by 20˚C. | We use Australian tablespoons and cups: 1 teaspoon equals 5 ml; 1 tablespoon equals 20 ml; 1 cup equals 250 ml. | All herbs are fresh (unless specified) and cups are lightly packed. | All vegetables are medium size and peeled, unless specified. | All eggs are 55-60 g, unless specified.
Instructions
Peel the potatoes and trim them a little to obtain rectangles with almost straight edges. Cut the rectangles into long 1 cm-thick slices, then into 1 cm sticks. Pat dry on a tea towel.
Preheat the oil in a deep fryer or large deep saucepan to 150ºC.
Very carefully drop the dried chips in the hot oil and cook for 5 minutes. When done, they should be still pale in colour. Remove with a slotted spoon or wire basket and set aside.
Increase the temperature of the oil to 190ºC. Gently drop the potatoes back into the oil and cook for 4 minutes or until golden and crisp. Drain on paper towel and sprinkle with salt. Serve immediately with mayonnaise on the side.

But I didn't, so it doesn't!" However, the irony is that you won't find too many cities, even in Europe, that are as cute and architecturally as impressive as Brugge. Come join us as we munch down on Belgian fries, chocolate and waffles as we discover the city by foot and by boat on the canals. We also show you what a night out on the town looks like. We're confident that after watching this you'll have a better opinion than Ray (Farrell) did of the city ;)
In Bruges with Busabout Travel Video Transcript:
After leaving Paris, our next stop with Busabout was Bruges. However, en route to our destination we made a surprise stop at Vimy Ridge. The Battle of Vimy Ridge was fought during the First World War, where Canadian troops played an important role in capturing German-held ground. Today there's a memorial with a statue of Mother Canada weeping over the lost soldiers.
Well, Hello and welcome to Brugge! We are excited to explore the city. We just got here in the afternoon. The light is perfect, the day is beautiful and we're going to go explore and see what the city is all about.
Once in Bruges we set off to see the Old Town. We watched horse-drawn carriages roll down the square, admired the buildings, and visited chocolate shops because if there's one thing you have to do in Belgium, it's sample all their delicious chocolate.
So good morning. It is the start of day 2 here in Bruges, so we're going to continue sightseeing. I think the first order of business is to try and find a boat so we can take a little tour down the canals and maybe after that we'll start thinking about food. I know there is a few Belgian dishes that we're itching to try so let's get started with the day.
We started off the morning with a cruise down the canals. Like many cities in Europe, Bruges too has earned the nickname 'The Venice of the North' due to the numerous waterways that run through the city. It was a great way to get a closer look at the city, and it didn't hurt that we had swans to keep us company.
The boat trip helped build up our appetite, so our next logical stop was a little shop specializing in fries. The Belgians assert that they invented fries and not the French, so we ordered a plateful with mayonnaise and curry ketchup.
After eating lunch, we continued exploring the town on foot, and then it was time for dessert.
Waffles, waffles! We are having waffles.
What do you get when you have a major sweet tooth, if not Belgian waffles doused in chocolate syrup and whipped cream. Delicious!
So this is completely unplanned but we just found out we are in town during this crazy music and dance festival. So we've been handed a flier and there is a whole bunch of different workshops happening. You can learn to break-dance, dance the Charleston. You can go to different concerts. So we're going to be spending the evening here in the town just checking it out and visiting the various stages.
The Benenwerk Festival was the best surprise of them all! The silent disco was our personal favourite. Everyone wore headphones and there were 2 dueling DJs so you could switch frequencies and decide who you wanted to listen to. After showing off our best dance moves, aherm, we spent the rest of the evening checking out the different stages at the festival.
So there has been a lot of dancing involved in the last hour, so now it is time to cool down with our first Belgian beer. Beer o'clock! Cheers! Woo!
And that's a wrap for our short but sweet visit to Bruges. Next up: Amsterdam!

Earlier this year while visiting Lima, Peru we did a Churros taste test in a famous local cafe nearby Kennedy Park. Now that we've found ourselves in Madrid, Spain it was time to sample Churros done the Spanish way. Unlike in Latin America, where stuffed or filled Churros are quite common, the Churros here in Spain are often plain but dunked in hot chocolate. This kind of hot chocolate is unlike any you've likely ever had before. Thick, more like a sludge than anything else, is the best way I can describe it. I have a feeling extra condensed milk is used to make it this way. Anyhow, Churros here in Madrid are eaten typically for breakfast. Although they're not what you'd call a complete or healthy way to start the day they're certainly delicious. Moreover, they're usually the cheapest option at local cafes and since arriving here we've been sampling them in earnest.
Churros vs Porras: Spanish Doughnut Taste Test in Madrid, Spain Travel Video Transcript:
So it is breakfast time here in Madrid. We've just rolled out of bed at 10 am. Which is a bit unusual. But we're here at a local cafe and we're going to have a traditional Spanish breakfast. So we have ordered a hot chocolate with Churros and Porras. So we're going to show you what those are like in just a few minutes.
So this is something that is completely new for me. This is called Porras. And it is basically like a giant sized Churro. Like I've never seen anything like this before. I know, look at that, it's like. It's wider than your shoulders. Hahaha!
Alright, so we're going to dip it in the hot chocolate because that is how things are done here.
Oh ho ho baby.
Mmmmm.
That is delicious.
It is nice and greasy. And sweet. It is probably not the healthiest way to start the day but 'hey' when in Spain. Hey we're doing it the Spanish way.
That is delicious.
I'm loving it.
What are you having? I'm actually having the proper Churros. This is a deep-fried dough. And what I've found interesting is that when I've had this in Canada it is more of a dessert but over here in Spain it is a breakfast. And it is very popular breakfast item. So let's dip that right in the chocolate. Show us how it is done.
Break off a piece here.
And that hot chocolate is as thick as it gets. It must have some kind of special ingredients that make it especially thick and rich. It's like mud. It's like chocolate sludge.
Wow! Let me just say I could get very used to having this as my normal breakfast. It's that good.
So what I find unique about the Spanish Churros is the shape. When we had these in South America they were usually like long little strips. And also there is no filing in these. I still haven't come across any Spanish Churros that have fillings. Whereas in South America they were stuffed with chocolate, vanilla pudding, dulce de leche. So that is another difference.
Now let's dip this. Oh la la.
This is so good.
Mmmm.
It is like a wishbone.
Hahahaha.
So show us what you do with the leftover hot chocolate. You know what. This is a breakfast that is like a gift that keeps on giving. What is left over is a hot chocolate and it is amazing. It is so thick. Like we were talking earlier. It is almost like a sludge but it is really rich and creamy. I think there is extra condensed milk or something.
Wonderful.
So this is a super affordable breakfast. I've got the menu right next to me. And basically it is two Euros and fifty cents and you get your peach juice, your hot chocolate and either three Churros or three Porras. And yeah, I'm stuffed after all that food. Surprisingly.

Brussels is the capital of Belgium and the de facto capital of the European Union (EU). It is also the largest urban area in Belgium, comprising 19 municipalities, including the municipality of the City of Brussels, which is the de jure capital of Belgium, in addition to the seat of the French Community of Belgium and of the Flemish Community.
The most important places to visit in Brussels: The Atomium (amongst the world's most fascinating buildings, represents a cell of iron crystal magnified 165 billion times. You can even take a walk inside), Manneken Pis (simply put, a statue of a boy urinating. No one expected a famous Brussels landmark. Often it's adorned with costumes), Royal greenhouses (built all the way back in 1873, it's a massive complex of greenhouse domes and galleries that showcase many rare plants and flowers), Royal Palace (currently the offices of Belgian monarchy, this present structure was constructed in the 19th century), Grand Palace (spend an evening in Europe's most beautiful square. Few other places in the world can match its architectural splendor) and many more.
This video offers a lot of tips to help you plan the perfect vacation. If you want to save time and money, the most important Brussels travel tip is to compare prices before booking a hotel room or a flight. You can do this for free on http://bookinghunter.com, a site that searches through hundreds of other travel websites in real time for the best travel deals available.

Brussels, being the center of the European Union, is not only the capital of Belgium, but of whole Europe. The mediaval city core and square determine the atmosphere of the whole city. The Grand Palace is surrounded by magnificent baroque buildings, which were once centers of famous guilds. The building of the City Hall is remerkably beautiful. Not far away stands the Menneken Pils, one of the symbols of Brussels. In the elegant passages and on the streets one can find such Belgian rarities as lace, pralines, and beer. The most notable sights in the city are the Parliament and the City Hall, but we must not forget the Museums showing us the works of the authors of the Low Countries. Near the triumphal arch stands the famous Atomium, which was the symbol of the 1958 World Fair. We can take memorable trips to Bokrijk cultural village, to the shore os Oostende, the site of the battle of Waterloo, and to the cities of Antwerpen and Gent. And finally to Bruges, a real tourists’ paradise with its red brick buildings.

Bruges is a town in Flanders, the northern part of Belgium. Relatively cosmopolitan and bourgeois given its compact size, it is one of the best preserved pre-motorised cities in Europe and offers the kind of charms rarely available elsewhere. Bruges is a postcard perfect stop on any tour of Europe.

=====================
Once over the encircling canal and inside the city walls, Bruges closes in around you with street after street of charming historic houses and a canal always nearby. In recent years, the city has turned so much towards tourism the locals sometimes complain they are living in Disney-land. The newly cleaned houses should however not confuse you; they are truly centuries old. And if you can get away from the chocolate-shops, you can visit some more quiet areas s.a. St. Anna, and imagine what life in the late middle ages must have been like.
The Bruges Card provides discounts to most of the major attractions (as well as to performances at the Concertgebouw, and can be picked up at any of the hostels around town. It is available for either 2 or 3 consecutive days. The reduced rate cannot be used in conjunction with a student rate (both student and Bruges card rates are identical) and hence is most useful for older travellers.
It is also possible to buy a combined ticket to see all Musea Brugge museums, which is good value if you intend to visit more than 2.
highlights in Bruges, Belgium
==================
Groeninge Museum, Dijver 12, B-8000, . 7 days 9:30AM-5PM. Known as 'The city museum of Fine Arts', it houses a collection of artworks that span several centuries (14th-20th), focusing mainly on works by painters who lived and worked in Bruges. €8 / €6 (audioguide and ticket Arents House and Forum+ included in the entrance).
Basilica of the Holy Blood (Heilige Bloed Basiliek), Burg 10, [9]. Apr-Sep 9:30AM-11:50AM & 2PM-5:50PM, Oct-Mar 10AM-11:50AM & 2PM-3:50PM. A beautiful church on the Burg square. It houses a relic - a vial of blood that is said to be that of Jesus - and was built in the Gothic style. Try and get there early so you can view the chapel when it is quiet and not filled with tourists. And don't forget to visit the chapel underneath, in heavy Romanesque style - a contrast to the lovely light Gothic above. Free.
Brewery De Halve Maan, Walplein 26, ☎ +31 50 332-697, [10]. Apr-Oct M-Sa 11:00-16:00, Su 11:00-17:00. This brewery annex beer museum offers a tour of the beer making process. A history of the brewery is provided, as well as an overview of the city from its tower. The tour lasts for 45 minutes and is a good way to get a feel for Belgian beer making. The tours start at the exact turn of the hour, be at least fifteen minutes early as there is a maximum amount of people that can join. The entrance price includes one drink of Brugse Zot or Straffe Hendrik and is served after the tour at the outside terrace or indoor bar. €7.00 including 1 beer.
Onze Lieve Vrouwkerk, Mariastraat. A fascinating church with architecture from the Romanesque and Gothic periods. In the east end of the church are very fine tombs of Charles the Bold and his daughter Mary of Burgundy - in contrasting Gothic and Renaissance styles, despite their superficial similarity. The church also houses one of the few Michelangelo sculptures outside of Italy, the "Madonna with child". Currently 2 euro to see the Michelangelo.
Jerusalem church, In a quiet area of the city, a highly unusual church with octagonal tower built by the Adornes brothers, merchants of Italian extraction. It includes a fine black tournai marble tomb, late Gothic stained glass, and a tiny and rather spooky chapel containing an effigy of the dead Christ. The entrance fee also covers the Lace Museum in the former Adornes mansion, where you can see local women and girls learning this traditional craft.
The Begijnhof. Also known as the convent, between the centre of the city and the station, with white painted small houses and fine plane trees, is a quiet place to walk - groups are discouraged. edit
The Hospital of St John, [12]. 09:30 - 17:00, Closed Mondays. Sint-Janshospitaal contains a museum of six paintings by Hans Memling, within the early medieval hospital buildings. €6 with Bruges card / €8.
Choco-Story Museum, Wijnzakstraat 2 (Sint-Jansplein), ☎ 050/61.22.37, [13]. 10AM-5PM. This museum, on several floors of a period house, describes chocolate's transition from cocoa into chocolate. It is run by the Belgian chocolate manufacturer Belcolade. Stay for the chocolate making exhibition to get some excellent samples. €6 with Bruges card / €7.

From its breathtaking medieval centre to its 21st-century temple to Surrealism, the new Magritte Museum, Brussels offers the visitor a great deal more than just beer and chocolate and is resoundingly unlike its unfortunate staid image as the home of EU beaurocrats.
Indeed, Brussels is a creative, dynamic city. Its compact city centre is clustered with bars, restaurants and museums set along cobbled streets. Inevitably, most tourists head to the Grand-Place. With its ornate Flemish guild houses, impressive Town Hall and buzzing atmosphere, it would be difficult to find a more beautiful square in the whole of Europe. It deservedly is a UNESCO World Heritage site and is the city's crowning jewel. Wander next to the nearby Royal and Sablon districts teeming with art galleries and antique shops. Throw away your map and meander down a myriad side streets,
discovering flea markets, art-deco houses and boutique stores.
Léopold II's Parisian-style boulevards (Belliard and La Loi) are lined with embassies, banks and grand apartment buildings, while Sainte Cathérine, the Art Nouveau district of St-Gilles and Ixelles draw an arty crowd with their eclectic shops and restaurants.
The Bruxellois take pride in their self-effacing, intellectual sense of humour, underpinned by a strong appreciation of the bizarre. The city has a long-running love affair with the Surrealist art movement, pioneered by René Magritte, and with classic comic strips, epitomised by Hergé's boy hero, Tintin. There's a telling irony in the fact that the city's best-known landmark is the Manneken-Pis, a tiny statuette of a urinating boy.
Meanwhile, all of this sits alongside world-class collections of art, fabulous cooking including mussels, frites, waffles and whelks, some of Europe's best and unique beers (literally, there are thousands of varieties), and master-chocolatiers. When it comes to this confectionary, it pays to ignore the well-known brands such as Godiva or Neuhaus, and seek out the stylish boutique of the trendiest 'chocolatier', Pierre Marcolini who cnce a year, creates a limited-edition design.
The city's cultural calendar is packed with events for everyone from the massive, raucous Foire du Midi street fair every July teeming with stalls and fairground attractions to the legendary Christmas Market that takes centre stage in the Place Sainte Catherine with 240 stalls, a skating rink, a big wheel, and numerous rides. One of the biggest events is Art Brussels, showcasing the city's edgier, creative side and a hub for art connoisseurs from around the globe.
If you're a Euro-loving national, check out the European Quarter, centered around Schuman and the Berlaymont. Its liveliest part is the Place du Luxembourg: all its bars fill up around 6pm on week days with some of the 20,000 diplomats, politicians and civil servants who reside in the city after Brussels became the centre of international political following WWII.
Easily accessible by train from other major European cities, Brussels is also the gateway for day trips to Amsterdam, Ghent, Luxembourg, Antwerp and Bruges, among others, making it a fabulous two-centre destination.

The city of Bruges, Belgium is one of the best preserved Gothic Era cities in Europe. Located near the English Channel it became a major trading center. In the early 1500's Bruges' access to the sea was cut off when the river filled with silt. Trade moved to Antwerp and Bruges went into a kind of time capsule that wasn't opened until the middle of the 20th century when tourists discovered this sleeping beauty. Belgium Travel Guide http://bit.ly/1b1GSXS
Shepherd Entertainment takes you on a tour of parks and architecture in Belgium and helps you explore the history and beauty
of many attractions such as The Arch of Triumph, The Parc du Cinquantenaireand the famous four museums it hosts today.
The entire northern section of the park is occupied by the palace of the nation as the parliament is called here. The building was designed by French architect Barnabay Giumar. It was finished in 1783 but exactly to the date, 100 years later, it was almost completely destroyed in a fire. The renovated neoclassic palace is where the plenary sessions of the two chambers of the Belgian parliament, the chamber of representatives and the senate are held. The relief on the façade was created by Gilabert Goushal and is entitled the reward of the good and the punishment of evil.
The arch of triumph and the Parc de Cinquantenaire were commissioned by the order of King Leopold II to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the independence of Belgium thus the former unused marsh area of the city was put to use. Eventually by the stipulated deadline, only the park and two exhibition halls were completed where the 1880 art and industrial fair was held. The originally planned arch of triumph was built 50 years later. The designs for the gates of the city were inspired by the Triomphe d'arc in Paris with a four horse carriages and symbolic figures on top and the national press below them. For a period of time, the huge hall stood there empty but later, they were used as a venue for horse races and occasional exhibitions. The area got a new surge of life towards the end of the 20th century. That was when the art nouveau pavilion of architect Victor Otto was opened. The great halls became home to four museums. The Musees royaux d'Art et d'Histoire is mainly dedicated to artifacts of ancient civilizations but it also has a section on industrial design. The Musees de l'Armee is an exhibition of war history and includes an aircraft collection, the Musees royaux del'Armee et Histoire Militaire. The name of the fourth exhibition is Otto World which is probably the best museum in the world on the subject.
Two quarters of Brussels are occupied by the buildings of the European Union. The Quartier European is where the council of ministers and public officers work while the parliament quarter is the in Quartier Leopold. The permanent seat of the European parliament is in Strasberg while the administrative center is located in Luxembourg. But the committee sessions are held in Brussels. The locals call the huge super modern steel frame glass structure, the Caprice des duex which means the whims of the gods. The name also refers to a French cheese packed in an oval container and to the haughtiness of the parliament as well. Many Brusselians are still angry because the charming Leopold section of the city was almost completely swept away to be replaced by the headquarters of the EU. The circle named after Robert Schuman EU politician is an important traffic hub. There's still a little bit of the air lingering of the former Leopold quarter here. The many small pubs in the area are mainly frequented by the officials of the union but are also favorites among tourists.

Take a tour of Brussels City Hall in Brussels, Belgium -- part of the World's Greatest Attractions travel video series by GeoBeats.
The kind of city hall that a city has says a lot about what kind of city it is.
The city hall of Brussels, Belgium reflects the city's reputation for beauty, history, and culture.
This ornate, Gothic building was originally constructed in the early years of the fifteenth century.
The soaring, airy tower, which is over 300 feet tall, was an added feature that replaced the belfry about fifty years after the initial construction.
The city hall has an asymmetrical design that is the result of differing stages of construction of the building.
Brussels' mayor still has his office here, following several renovation projects in the 20th century.

Take a tour of Belfry of Brugge in Brugge, Belgium -- part of the World's Greatest Attractions travel video series by GeoBeats.
In the city of Brugge, Belgium there stands an ancient and imposing tower.
This belfry is quite old and has held an immense importance to the city's citizens.
The beautiful Gothic structure is attached to what was once the grand market hall.
It was built in 1240 and its bells were used to alert the town to news.
The belfry once had a spire, but after three fires and reconstructions, it was lost.
It's a long ascension up the 366 steps to the top, but the panorama atop the tower makes the climb worthwhile.

Shepherd Entertainment takes you on a tour of Waterloo in Belgium. The battle of Waterloo was a defining event for Napoleon
and all Europe. That was where the world conquering French army was defeated by the troops of the Duke of Wellington. Napoleon resigned and was exiled to the island of St. Helen afterwards.
The battle of waterloo was a defining event for Napoleon and all Europe. That was where the world conquering French army was defeated by the troops of the Duke of Wellington. Napoleon resigned and was exiled to the island of St. Helen afterwards. Of course, everything in the previously unknown Belgian village is all about the battle and two opposing generals. The Butte du Lion is a 40m high artificial hill raised at the place where the Duke of Orange, one of the generals of Wellington was wounded. 226 stairs lead up to the statue of a lion on top of the hill. Cycloramas first became popular in the 19th century. The 110m long panoramic painting of Louis de Moulins depicting the battle of waterloo was finished in 1912 and was placed in a gallery specifically made to accommodate it. 3km from waterloo, there's a wax museum where the heroes of the battle come alive in the form of wax figures and paintings. Even the farm where Napoleon spent the day before the battle is dedicated to his memory.
The inn where Wellington stayed the night prior to the battle was turned into a museum. The Eglise St. Joseph Chapel is right across the street. The small St. Joseph church was originally a royal cahpel. Today, it's a monument dedicated to the casualties of the battle. It was significantly large, in order to provide ample room for the memorial plaques of the fallen soldiers. The majority of these tablets were made from the donations of soldiers paying tribute to the memory of their commanders. The battle took place on the 18th of June. Each year, there's an anniversary show acted out by enthusiasts of war history dressed in period costumes who reenact the events of the day. The war gaming table set up in the museum is ground for heated debates. The battle may also be replayed as a board game or a computer game. These are also available at the gift shops that are a constant feature everywhere including waterloo as well.
