The Begijnhof is one of the oldest inner courts in the city of Amsterdam. A group of historic buildings, mostly private dwellings, centre on it. As the name suggests, it was originally a Béguinage. Today it is also the site of the English Reformed Church.
The Begijnhof is the only inner court in Amsterdam which was founded during the Middle Ages, and therefore lies within the Singel — the innermost canal of Amsterdam's circular canal system. The Begijnhof is at medieval street level, which means a metre below the rest of the old city centre.
It is unclear when exactly the Begijnhof (Beguines' court) was founded. In 1346, the beguines still lived in a house. A courtyard was only first mentioned in 1389, probably after the religious status of the city rose due to the Amsterdam Eucharistic Miracle of 1345.

The beautiful houses overlook its well-kept green garden, include the Amsterdam's oldest surviving house Het Houten Huis dating from around 1420. On the adjoining walls, there is a fascinating collection of wall plaques with biblical theme. Southern fringe of the square is dominated by the Engelse Kerk (English Church) which dates from the 15 century and possesses its original medieval tower.
Houses in Begijnhof are still occupied by single women, so please respect their privacy and be quiet.
The Begijnhof Chapel (No. 29 and 30), a clandestine church, was completed in 1680. It contains many reminders of the Catholic past.

Het Oud Groot Begijnhof Sint-Elisabeth in Gent, gelegen tussen het Rabot en het Gravensteen, is een opmerkelijk staaltje religie verweven met wereldse elementen.
De eerste grondvesten dateren uit 1234 ten tijde dat gravin Johanna van Constantinopel aan de begijnen van de Bijloke een eigen hof toegewezen kregen tussen de Brugstraat en het Overbroek. Een ministad met een barokgotische kerk, infirmerie, infirmeriekapel, conventen, allerhande begijnenhuizen, de bleekweide en boomgaard zag het levenslicht. In 1899 werd het Begijnhofdries verfraaid met het Rodenbach-monument 'Bruges-la-morte' van de beeldhouwer George Minne. Vandaag de dag is het een heerlijke plek om tot bezinning en/of rust te komen. Beguinage
A beguinage (From the French béguinage) is an architectural complex which formerly housed beguines, lay religious women who lived in community without taking vows or retiring from the world. There are two types of beguinages: those housing small, informal, and often poor communities that emerged across Europe from the twelfth century on, and the 'court beguinages' (begijnhof (Dutch)), a much larger and more stable type of community that emerged in the region of the Low Countries in the first decades of the thirteenth century. Several of these are now listed by UNESCO as World Heritage. By the mid-thirteenth century, the French king Louis IX founded a beguinage in Paris, which was modeled on the court beguinages of the Low Countries.
Etymology
The Oxford English Dictionary, citing Du Cange, gives the origin of the word "beguine" in the name of Lambert le Bègue, "Lambert the Stammerer", an early supporter of the movement who died around 1180.
Description
While a small beguinage usually constituted just one house where women lived together, a Low Countries court beguinage typically comprised one or more courtyards surrounded by houses, and also included a church, an infirmary complex, and a number of communal houses or 'convents'. From the twelfth century through the eighteenth, every city and large town in the Low Countries had at least one court beguinage: the communities dwindled and came to an end, over the course of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries). They were encircled by walls and separated from the town proper by several gates which were closed at night. During the day the beguines could come and go as they pleased. Beguines came from a wide range of social classes, though truly poor women were only admitted if they had a wealthy benefactor who pledged to provide for their needs.

The Begijnhof Chapel (No. 29 and 30), a clandestine church, was completed in 1680. It contains many reminders of the Catholic past.
The Begijnhof history
It is unclear when exactly the Begijnhof was established. According a document the Beguines lived in 1346 in a house called "Beghynhuys". Later, in 1389, in a privileged letter there is mention of a courtyard.
Nowadays Begijnhof is one of Amsterdam's top 10 attractions.

A part of the exhibit of the Amsterdam Historical Museum, consists of an impressive gallery of old portraits of the important citizens of Amsterdam - men and women.
