A Chinese company is testing the possibility of maintaining a helium balloon in a stable height more than 20 kilometers above ground, while remotely controlling its movements, according to experts at the test site in New Zealand's South Island on Saturday.
The helium balloon, named "Traveler", has a diameter of 30 meters and various equipment attached that can collect air and ground information from 20 to 100 kilometers above the ground.
"Our purpose is to achieve the long duration flight at a stable height to provide better services for people," said Zhou Fei, from Shenzhen Kuang Chi Higher Institute of Technology, a Shenzhen-based private research institute.
The balloon is powered by a highly-effective lithium battery and a solar panel, which together provide continuous power day and night.
"During the day, the solar panel provides electricity to the cabin while charging the power system. After sunset, the rechargeable battery provides electricity to the whole system," said Zheng Xiang, a researcher from Shenzhen Kuang Chi Higher Institute of Technology.
According to Zheng, NASA and Google have their own projects sending airliners 20 to 100 kilometers over the ground. However, China’s "Traveler" has more complex technology, a larger load, is controllable, recyclable, and will be able to provide more services in the future.
Aircraft fly at altitudes of less than 20 kilometers while satellites and spacecraft orbit the earth at heights of over 100 kilometers. Therefore, the space between 20 and 100 kilometers above the ground is an area that has not yet been fully developed.
If technical equipment can be placed in this area, it could provide more efficient and cheaper services than what is currently offered by satellites in areas such as communications, navigation, and meteorology.

An earthquake measuring magnitude-5.8 struck off northeastern Japan on Wednesday evening. Boko Haram members on Sunday kidnapped nearly 100 men and boys from a remote village in northern Nigeria.
According to witnesses who hid in the bush for days and travelled some 180 kilometers to escape the raid, Boko Haram members arrived at Doron Baga village at around 5:30 a.m. shouting “Allah Akbar” (God is great) and shooting sporadically.
They forced people out of their houses and loaded men and boys into trucks, threatening to shoot whoever disobeyed them, witness Halima Adamu was quoted by Reuters as saying.
According to villagers, Boko Haram members also burned several houses and executed six older men, Al Jazeera reported. When they fled the scene, only women, girls and young children were left in the village.
The kidnapping comes four months after Boko Haram abducted more than 200 schoolgirls from the village of Chibok, in southern Nigeria.
Attacks on civilians by the group who is aiming at reinstating a medieval Islamic caliphate in the country have dramatically increased in the last year, Al Jazeera said. They include kidnapping boys and forcing them to fight and abducting girls as sex slaves.
According to the Diplomacy Post, ten of thousands of Nigerians have been killed since Boko Haram switched from proselytization to combat in 2009.
“The group has also been blamed for the destruction of public infrastructure, private businesses and the displacement of at least six million Nigerians,” the news site reported.

Boko Haram, referred to by themselves as Wilāyat Gharb Ifrīqīyyah (Arabic: الولاية الإسلامية غرب أفريقيا, (Islamic State West Africa Province, ISWAP), and Jamā'at Ahl as-Sunnah lid-Da'wah wa'l-Jihād (Arabic: جماعة أهل السنة للدعوة والجهاد, "Group of the People of Sunnah for Preaching and Jihad"), is an Islamic extremist group based in northeastern Nigeria, also active in Chad, Niger and northern Cameroon. The group's leader is Abubakar Shekau. The group had alleged links to al-Qaeda, but in March 2015, it announced its allegiance to the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL). Since the current insurgency started in 2009, it has killed 20,000 and displaced 2.3 million from their homes.
After its founding in 2002, Boko Haram's increasing radicalization led to a violent uprising in July 2009 in which its leader was summarily executed. Its unexpected resurgence, following a mass prison break in September 2010, was accompanied by increasingly sophisticated attacks, initially against soft targets, and progressing in 2011 to include suicide bombings of police buildings and the United Nations office in Abuja. The government's establishment of a state of emergency at the beginning of 2012, extended in the following year to cover the entire northeast of Nigeria, led to an increase in both security force abuses and militant attacks.

A Chinese company is testing the possibility of maintaining a helium balloon in a stable height more than 20 kilometers above ground, while remotely controlling its movements, according to experts at the test site in New Zealand's South Island on Saturday.
The helium balloon, named "Traveler", has a diameter of 30 meters and various equipment attached that can collect air and ground information from 20 to 100 kilometers above the ground.
"Our purpose is to achieve the long duration flight at a stable height to provide better services for people," said Zhou Fei, from Shenzhen Kuang Chi Higher Institute of Technology, a Shenzhen-based private research institute.
The balloon is powered by a highly-effective lithium battery and a solar panel, which together provide continuous power day and night.
"During the day, the solar panel provides electricity to the cabin while charging the power system. After sunset, the rechargeable battery provides electricity to the whole system," said Zheng Xiang, a researcher from Shenzhen Kuang Chi Higher Institute of Technology.
According to Zheng, NASA and Google have their own projects sending airliners 20 to 100 kilometers over the ground. However, China’s "Traveler" has more complex technology, a larger load, is controllable, recyclable, and will be able to provide more services in the future.
Aircraft fly at altitudes of less than 20 kilometers while satellites and spacecraft orbit the earth at heights of over 100 kilometers. Therefore, the space between 20 and 100 kilometers above the ground is an area that has not yet been fully developed.
If technical equipment can be placed in this area, it could provide more efficient and cheaper services than what is currently offered by satellites in areas such as communications, navigation, and meteorology.

According to witnesses who hid in the bush for days and travelled some 180 kilometers to escape the raid, Boko Haram members arrived at Doron Baga village at around 5:30 a.m. shouting “Allah Akbar” (God is great) and shooting sporadically.
They forced people out of their houses and loaded men and boys into trucks, threatening to shoot whoever disobeyed them, witness Halima Adamu was quoted by Reuters as saying.
According to villagers, Boko Haram members also burned several houses and executed six older men, Al Jazeera reported. When they fled the scene, only women, girls and young children were left in the village.
The kidnapping comes four months after Boko Haram abducted more than 200 schoolgirls from the village of Chibok, in southern Nigeria.
Attacks on civilians by the group who is aiming at reinstating a medieval Islamic caliphate in the country have dramatically increased in the last year, Al Jazeera said. They include kidnapping boys and forcing them to fight and abducting girls as sex slaves.
According to the Diplomacy Post, ten of thousands of Nigerians have been killed since Boko Haram switched from proselytization to combat in 2009.
“The group has also been blamed for the destruction of public infrastructure, private businesses and the displacement of at least six million Nigerians,” the news site reported.

National Geographic reports that asian giant hornets, which are native to East and Southeast Asia, are about 4 to 5 centimeters long with roughly 1-centimeter-long stingers.
The vespa mandarinia tend to target bees but have been known to attack humans when disturbed. In 2013, 42 people died and more than 1,000 others were injured after a vicious spate of attacks in China's Shanxi province.
According to Live Science, they're able to travel up to 100 kilometers at a speed of 40 kilometers per hour, much faster than a person can run.
Hornets sting their victims repeatedly, releasing a potent venom containing eight different chemicals that attract more hornets to the victim, potentially causing anaphylactic shock and renal failure.
Experts advise that the best way to be safe is to steer clear of any nests, which are often located underground or in tree stumps, according to National Geographic.

The 19-year-old, a student at Foshan Polytechnic, was declared dead of severe head injury and blood loss when the emergency workers from local hospital reached the site 10 minutes after incident.
According to reports, the site where the accident happened is witnessing roses in full bloom stretching more than 100 square kilometers. The view is attracting many tourists who flock near the railway track to take photos. Some even stand too close to the track just to get their photo and the train in the same frame.
A local flower grower who witnessed the accident said the woman was standing too close, less than 50 centimeters, to the tracks.
"Several people tried to warn her but maybe she did not hear them," said a witness surnamed Huang.
Medical staff members said there have been previous cases of people getting hit by trains as many use the tracks as a shortcut while ignoring the dangers posed by the trains.
Police have launched an investigation into the case.
Many internet user expresses remorse at woman's death.
@乐舞小影 said on SinaWeibo: "Sorry to hear the news that the woman got herself killed due to lack of safety awareness."
The internet user also said she's planning a trip to the exact spot to see the flowers and trains but now she's scared and hesitant.
Another netizen said on SinaWeibo: "It's common that people love to take photos in such beautiful places. But how sad her family will be, especially as she died in these circumstances. We have to be serious about our safety and never ignore any warnings."
Although even after hearing the news some visitors didn't seem to care at all.
After the fatal accident, people were still flocking to the flower field and taking photos with the trains.
A man who took a selfie said he had heard about the accident but he still believed it was safe to shoot selfies with trains. "The woman was just way too careless," said the man, "but we are fine."

The plug-in hybrid drive in the Audi Q7 e-tron quattro delivers plenty of power in any situation. The 3.0 TDI engine and the electric motor together produce a combined system output of 373 horsepower (275 kW) and 700 Nm (516.3 lb-ft) of torque. The sprint from 0 to 100 km/h (62.1 mph) takes just 6.0 seconds; top speed is 225 km/h (139.8 mph). Thanks to the 75 liter (19.8 US gal) fuel tank, total range is as much as 1,400 kilometers (869.9 mi). The advantage of the plug-in hybrid: Whereas cars with classic drive trains lose energy during braking, the Q7 e-tron quattro recuperates. In other words, during braking, it converts kinetic energy to electrical energy, which it can use again when accelerating.
The 3.0 TDI, a highly efficient, latest-generation V6 diesel engine, delivers 258 horsepower (190 kW) of power and 600 Nm (442.5 b-ft) of torque.
The electric motor produces 115 hp (94 kW) of power and 350 Nm (258.1 lb-ft) of torque. Together with a decoupler, it is integrated into the eight-speed tiptronic. The automatic transmission boasts high efficiency and low weight. During fast cornering, the quattro permanent all-wheel drive works closely with the wheelselective torque control, an intelligent software feature. This brakes the inside wheels ever so slightly, thus further enhancing the car’s agility and stability.
The Audi Q7 e-tron quattro also sets standards in consumption: According to the ECE standard for plug-in hybrids, it uses just 1.7 liters of diesel per 100 kilometers (138.4 US mpg). This corresponds to emissions of 46 grams CO2 per kilometer (74.0 g/mi). The climate control system is also designed for maximum efficiency.
The Audi Q7 e -tron will be rolling into European dealerships with a generous list of standard equipment in spring 2016. The base price in Germany is 80,500 euros.

Asiatic lions tend to be much bigger, according to the World Wildlife Federation (WWF). They weigh 300 to 500 lbs. (120 to 226 kg) and are 6.56 to 9.18 feet (200 to 280 cm) long. Their tails measure 23.62 to 35.43 inches (60 to 90 cm).
Male lions are generally larger than females and have a distinctive mane of hair around their heads. The mane's function is to make the male look more impressive to females and more intimidating to other males, according to the San Diego Zoo. The mane also protects the male's neck during fights over territory or mating rights.
Habitat

They wander a territory of 100 square miles (259 square kilometers), according to National Geographic. This territory consists of scrub, grasslands or open woodlands.
Asiatic lions are found only in the Gir Forest National Park in India. This park is a wildlife sanctuary on 877.37 square miles (1,412 square km) of land. The land includes a deciduous forest, grasslands, scrub jungle and rocky hills.

China has reportedly conducted a 48 hour test flight of its largest high-altitude airship, the Yuanmeng (Dream) in near space–the atmosphere between 20 kilometers to 100 kilometers altitude–IHS Jane’s Defense Weekly reports.
The Yuanmeng, according to a Chinese media outlet, ascended to an altitude of 20 kilometers at a test area near Xilinhot in Inner Mongolia using solar power to power its three propeller engines.
Beijing’s new high-altitude aircraft is one of the largest solar-powered airships in existence to date. According to Popular Science, the Yuanmeng has a volume of 18,000 cubic meters, a length of 75 meters and a height of 22 meters. It can carry a payload of 5 to 7 tons including “broadband communications, data relay, high-definition observation, space situational awareness, and airborne imaging systems” all powered by the sun.
A Chinese scientist involved with the project told Want China Times that the airship has been made of an extremely lightweight material capable of enduring tremendous pressure and that it is equipped with a highly efficient solar battery and lightweight avionics. “The biggest challenge for the near-space airship is the big temperature difference in the day and night,” another scientist told The People’s Daily Online.
The airship has purportedly been designed and built by Beijing Aerospace Technology Company and the Beijing University of Astronautics and Aeronautics (BUAA) first and foremost for civilian purposes such as weather monitoring, estimating crop yields, and disaster relief assistance.
However, according to a Chinese report cited by IHS Jane’s Defense Weekly, “from a national security perspective near-space steerable airships can rely on their height advantage for early warning, wartime communications support, or aiding attack platforms.”
During a future conflict where China’s satellite communications are blocked or satellites, in fact, destroyed through anti-satellite weapons, the Yuanmeng could as a communications relay station for Chinese aircraft and ships.
According to Popular Science:
Operating higher in near space means that the Yuanmeng would have constant line of sight over a hundred thousand square miles–an important requirement for radar and imaging. Increased sensor coverage means increased warning time against stealthy threats such as cruise missiles, giving Chinese forces a greater opportunity to detect and shoot down such threats. It would also be harder for fighters and surface-to-air missiles to attack near space objects.
While the airship will be vulnerable to missile attacks and other types of anti-satellite weapons, the Yuanmeng, equipped with sensors, could nevertheless serve as an early warning system in a future high-tech conflict. In particular, it could supplement China’s burgeoning anti-access/area denial capabilities by detecting incoming missiles, stealth planes, and warships from several hundred kilometers away.
