HBO premieres a 90-minute profile of Barry M. Goldwater, who rose from being a local businessman in Arizona (which was not yet a state when he was born) to become a hugely influential U.S. Senator whose 30-year career reached a crescendo with his ill-fated run for President in 1964.
The film follows that tumultuous year, as well as others in a career that encompassed numerous political and ideological triumphs. Though he never achieved the ultimate prize, the election of Ronald Reagan in 1980 vindicated the conservative agenda Goldwater had long championed.
Ironically, in later years, Goldwater's support of issues like abortion and gay rights were diametrically opposed to those of the "new conservative" leadership, underscoring both the distance the country has traveled in the last 40 years, as well as the dogged independence Goldwater embodied up to his death in 1998.
At the height of his power, Goldwater was the symbol of conservatism, denouncing Liberals and Communists while advocating limited government, free enterprise, separation of church and state, and a strong defense.
But because of his unequivocal opinions, Goldwater was vulnerable to attacks that labeled him pro-war and anti-Civil Rights. Those perceptions, coupled with JFK's death a year before the election, undermined Goldwater's presidential hopes, though he remained a strong and influential Senate voice for 23 more years.
In addition to detailing Goldwater's rise in politics, Mr. Conservative: Goldwater on Goldwater includes a myriad of anecdotes and insights about Goldwater's private and public life. Barry Morris Goldwater (January 2, 1909 – May 29, 1998) was a businessman and five-term United States Senator from Arizona (1953–65, 1969–87) and the Republican Party's nominee for president in the 1964 election.
Goldwater is the politician most often credited for sparking the resurgence of the American conservative political movement in the 1960s. He also had a substantial impact on the libertarian movement.
Goldwater rejected the legacy of the New Deal and fought through the conservative coalition against the New Deal coalition. He mobilized a large conservative constituency to win the hard-fought Republican primaries. Goldwater's conservative campaign platform ultimately failed to gain the support of the electorate[3] and he lost the 1964 presidential election to incumbent Democrat Lyndon B. Johnson by one of the largest landslides in history, bringing down many Republican candidates as well. The Johnson campaign and other critics painted him as a reactionary, while supporters praised his crusades against the Soviet Union, labor unions, and the welfare state. His defeat allowed Johnson and the Democrats in Congress to pass the Great Society programs, but the defeat of so many older Republicans in 1964 also cleared the way for a younger generation of American conservatives to mobilize. Goldwater was much less active as a national leader of conservatives after 1964; his supporters mostly rallied behind Ronald Reagan, who became governor of California in 1967 and the 40th President of the United States in 1981.
Goldwater returned to the Senate in 1969, and specialized in defense policy, bringing to the table his experience as a senior officer in the Air Force Reserve. In 1974, as an elder statesman of the party, Goldwater successfully urged President Richard Nixon to resign when evidence of a cover-up in the Watergate scandal became overwhelming and impeachment was imminent. By the 1980s, the increasing influence of the Christian right on the Republican Party so conflicted with Goldwater's views that he became a vocal opponent of the religious right on issues such as abortion, gay rights, and the role of religion in public life. After narrowly winning re-election to the Senate in 1980, he chose not to run for a fifth term in 1986, and was succeeded by fellow Republican John McCain. A significant accomplishment in his career was the passage of the Goldwater–Nichols Act of 1986, which restructured the higher levels of the Pentagon by placing the chain of command from the President to the Secretary of Defense directly to the commanders of the Unified Combatant Commands.

As Donald Trump continues to steamroll his way through the GOP primary, pundits have begun to compare his rise, and what some see as an inevitable fall, to failed presidential candidate Barry Goldwater.
But is it an apt comparison? Let's take a look at the evidence.
Goldwater was seen by some as an extremist fringe candidate; someone who was disliked by GOP party leaders and the establishment but somehow was able to galvanize the Republican base around his candidacy during the 1964 primary. Sounds familiar doesn't it? But the similarities don't stop there.
To this day, Goldwater has been criticized for playing on the fears of the electorate. As New York Gov. Nelson Rockefeller famously said, "The Republican Party must repudiate these people," when talking about Goldwater and his supporters. And Goldwater, like Trump, also received a strong endorsement from a KKK figure, which critics jumped all over.
So yes, the parallels make a comparison pretty simple, but for members of the #NeverTrump, it could also be wishful thinking.
Goldwater was decimated in the general election against Lyndon B. Johnson. Johnson received a historic 61 percent of the popular vote and won 486 electoral college votes compared to Goldwater's 52.
But it's actually not as easy to say Trump would fare as badly as Goldwater in a general election.
Yes, hypothetical polls have both Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders beating Trump in a November general. But Trump has proven himself to not only play the brash yelling billionaire but also the serious general election candidate.
"We want to put that same ability into doing something for our nation. Our nation is in serious trouble," Trump said.
Trump's Super Tuesday speech was more moderate and calm than the candidate usually is; possible proof he's already anticipating moving toward the center during a general election.
And based on Trump's swath of wins in primaries and caucuses, his support isn't as one-sided as you'd think. Virginia, a state with typically moderate Republicans, went to Trump on Super Tuesday. And the myth that Trump can only win with poorly educated voters has also been broken in states including Massachusetts and Tennessee, where he ran the table with all education levels.
So trying to predict Trump's demise is a fruitless exercise. If he's proven one thing this election season, it's that history isn't really telling us much of anything.

In 2010, Trump expressed an interest in becoming a candidate for President of the United States in the 2012 election. In May 2011, he announced he would not be a candidate, but a few weeks later he said he had not completely ruled out the possibility. In December 2011, Trump was suggested as a possible Vice Presidential selection by Michele Bachmann. Bachmann has since suspended her presidential campaign.

Rachel Anne Maddow (pronounced /ˈmædoʊ/; born April 1, 1973) is an American television host, political commentator, and author. Maddow hosts a nightly television show, The Rachel Maddow Show, on MSNBC. Her syndicated talk radio program of the same name aired on Air America Radio. Maddow is the first openly gay anchor of a prime-time news program in the United States.
Asked about her political views by the Valley Advocate, Maddow replied, "I'm undoubtedly a liberal, which means that I'm in almost total agreement with the Eisenhower-era Republican party platform."
Maddow was born in Castro Valley, California. Her father, Robert B. "Bob" Maddow, is a former United States Air Force captain who resigned his commission the year before her birth and found civilian work as a lawyer for the East Bay Municipal Utility District. Her mother, Elaine Maddow (née Gosse), is a school program administrator from Newfoundland, Canada. She has one older brother, David. Her father is of Russian and Dutch descent and her mother is of English and Irish ancestry. Maddow's mother was raised a strict Roman Catholic, and Maddow herself grew up in a community that her mother has described as "very conservative." Maddow was a competitive athlete and played three sports in high school. Referencing John Hughes films, she describes herself in high school as "a cross between the jock and the antisocial girl."

As Donald Trump continues to steamroll his way through the GOP primary, pundits have begun to compare his rise, and what some see as an inevitable fall, to failed presidential candidate Barry Goldwater. But is it an apt comparison? Let's take a look at the evidence. Goldwater was seen by some as an extremist fringe candidate; someone who was disliked by GOP party leaders and the establishment but somehow was able to galvanize the Republican base around his candidacy during the 1964 primary. Sounds familiar doesn't it? But the similarities don't stop there. To this day, Goldwater has been criticized for playing on the fears of the electorate. As New York Gov. Nelson Rockefeller famously said, "The Republican Party must repudiate these people," when talking about Goldwater and his supporters. And Goldwater, like Trump, also received a strong endorsement from a KKK figure, which critics jumped all over. So yes, the parallels make a comparison pretty simple, but for members of the #NeverTrump, it could also be wishful thinking. Goldwater was decimated in the general election against Lyndon B. Johnson. Johnson received a historic 61 percent of the popular vote and won 486 electoral college votes compared to Goldwater's 52. But it's actually not as easy to say Trump would fare as badly as Goldwater in a general election. Yes, hypothetical polls have both Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders beating Trump in a November general. But Trump has proven himself to not only play the brash yelling billionaire but also the serious general election candidate. "We want to put that same ability into doing something for our nation. Our nation is in serious trouble," Trump said. Trump's Super Tuesday speech was more moderate and calm than the candidate usually is; possible proof he's already anticipating moving toward the center during a general election. And based on Trump's swath of wins in primaries and caucuses, his support isn't as one-sided as you'd think. Virginia, a state with typically moderate Republicans, went to Trump on Super Tuesday. And the myth that Trump can only win with poorly educated voters has also been broken in states including Massachusetts and Tennessee, where he ran the table with all education levels. So trying to predict Trump's demise is a fruitless exercise. If he's proven one thing this election season, it's that history isn't really telling us much of anything. At the height of his power, Goldwater was the symbol of conservatism, denouncing Liberals and Communists while advocating limited government, free enterprise, separation of church and state, and a strong defense.
But because of his unequivocal opinions, Goldwater was vulnerable to attacks that labeled him pro-war and anti-Civil Rights. Those perceptions, coupled with JFK's death a year before the election, undermined Goldwater's presidential hopes, though he remained a strong and influential Senate voice for 23 more years.
In addition to detailing Goldwater's rise in politics, Mr. Conservative: Goldwater on Goldwater includes a myriad of anecdotes and insights about Goldwater's private and public life. Identified as much with his home state of Arizona as JFK was with Massachusetts, Goldwater was, according to George Will, "not just from Arizona .... he looked like Arizona."
In an era when JFK became the first Catholic ever to be elected President, Goldwater was in fact half Jewish. Remembers Robert MacNeil, "He often told the story about being born of a Jewish father and an Episcopalian mother. The Johnson campaign and other critics painted him as a reactionary, while supporters praised his crusades against the Soviet Union, labor unions, and the welfare state. His defeat allowed Johnson and the Democrats in Congress to pass the Great Society programs, but the defeat of so many older Republicans in 1964 also cleared the way for a younger generation of American conservatives to mobilize. Goldwater was much less active as a national leader of conservatives after 1964; his supporters mostly rallied behind Ronald Reagan, who became governor of California in 1967 and the 40th President of the United States in 1981.
Goldwater returned to the Senate in 1969, and specialized in defense policy, bringing to the table his experience as a senior officer in the Air Force Reserve. In 1974, as an elder statesman of the party, Goldwater successfully urged President Richard Nixon to resign when evidence of a cover-up in the Watergate scandal became overwhelming and impeachment was imminent. By the 1980s, the increasing influence of the Christian right on the Republican Party so conflicted with Goldwater's views that he became a vocal opponent of the religious right on issues such as abortion, gay rights, and the role of religion in public life. After narrowly winning re-election to the Senate in 1980, he chose not to run for a fifth term in 1986, and was succeeded by fellow Republican John McCain. A significant accomplishment in his career was the passage of the Goldwater–Nichols Act of 1986, which restructured the higher levels of the Pentagon by placing the chain of command from the President to the Secretary of Defense directly to the commanders of the Unified Combatant Commands.

As Donald Trump continues to steamroll his way through the GOP primary, pundits have begun to compare his rise, and what some see as an inevitable fall, to failed presidential candidate Barry Goldwater.
But is it an apt comparison? Let's take a look at the evidence.
Goldwater was seen by some as an extremist fringe candidate; someone who was disliked by GOP party leaders and the establishment but somehow was able to galvanize the Republican base around his candidacy during the 1964 primary. Sounds familiar doesn't it? But the similarities don't stop there.
To this day, Goldwater has been criticized for playing on the fears of the electorate. As New York Gov. Nelson Rockefeller famously said, "The Republican Party must repudiate these people," when talking about Goldwater and his supporters. And Goldwater, like Trump, also received a strong endorsement from a KKK figure, which critics jumped all over.
So yes, the parallels make a comparison pretty simple, but for members of the #NeverTrump, it could also be wishful thinking.
Goldwater was decimated in the general election against Lyndon B. Johnson. Johnson received a historic 61 percent of the popular vote and won 486 electoral college votes compared to Goldwater's 52.
But it's actually not as easy to say Trump would fare as badly as Goldwater in a general election.
Yes, hypothetical polls have both Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders beating Trump in a November general. But Trump has proven himself to not only play the brash yelling billionaire but also the serious general election candidate.
"We want to put that same ability into doing something for our nation. Our nation is in serious trouble," Trump said.
Trump's Super Tuesday speech was more moderate and calm than the candidate usually is; possible proof he's already anticipating moving toward the center during a general election.
And based on Trump's swath of wins in primaries and caucuses, his support isn't as one-sided as you'd think. Virginia, a state with typically moderate Republicans, went to Trump on Super Tuesday. And the myth that Trump can only win with poorly educated voters has also been broken in states including Massachusetts and Tennessee, where he ran the table with all education levels.
So trying to predict Trump's demise is a fruitless exercise. If he's proven one thing this election season, it's that history isn't really telling us much of anything.

As Donald Trump continues to steamroll his way through the GOP primary, pundits have begun to compare his rise, and what some see as an inevitable fall, to failed presidential candidate Barry Goldwater.
But is it an apt comparison? Let's take a look at the evidence.
Goldwater was seen by some as an extremist fringe candidate; someone who was disliked by GOP party leaders and the establishment but somehow was able to galvanize the Republican base around his candidacy during the 1964 primary. Sounds familiar doesn't it? But the similarities don't stop there.
To this day, Goldwater has been criticized for playing on the fears of the electorate. As New York Gov. Nelson Rockefeller famously said, "The Republican Party must repudiate these people," when talking about Goldwater and his supporters. And Goldwater, like Trump, also received a strong endorsement from a KKK figure, which critics jumped all over.
So yes, the parallels make a comparison pretty simple, but for members of the #NeverTrump, it could also be wishful thinking.
Goldwater was decimated in the general election against Lyndon B. Johnson. Johnson received a historic 61 percent of the popular vote and won 486 electoral college votes compared to Goldwater's 52.
But it's actually not as easy to say Trump would fare as badly as Goldwater in a general election.
Yes, hypothetical polls have both Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders beating Trump in a November general. But Trump has proven himself to not only play the brash yelling billionaire but also the serious general election candidate.
"We want to put that same ability into doing something for our nation. Our nation is in serious trouble," Trump said.
Trump's Super Tuesday speech was more moderate and calm than the candidate usually is; possible proof he's already anticipating moving toward the center during a general election.
And based on Trump's swath of wins in primaries and caucuses, his support isn't as one-sided as you'd think. Virginia, a state with typically moderate Republicans, went to Trump on Super Tuesday. And the myth that Trump can only win with poorly educated voters has also been broken in states including Massachusetts and Tennessee, where he ran the table with all education levels.
So trying to predict Trump's demise is a fruitless exercise. If he's proven one thing this election season, it's that history isn't really telling us much of anything.
