Scotland shattered by controversial penalty call

It's the biggest call of the Rugby World Cup, ultimately ending Scotland's tournament and giving Australia a second life. Scotland feel hard done by, but Wallabies coach Michael Cheika insists his side deserved to win.

LONDON: Forget the controversy and move on to the semi-final. That's the message coming out of Wallabies camp as they attempt to bury the lingering referee drama of their tense quarter-final win.

The Wallabies have dismissed the ongoing saga surrounding their World Cup presence as "peripheral" and "irrelevant" as they turn their focus to a showdown with Argentina at Twickenham.

World Rugby fanned the fire by releasing a statement to say that Craig Joubert's decision was wrong in awarding the Wallabies' a last-minute penalty against Scotland that allowed Bernard Foley to boot Australia to a 35-34 win.

It has caused massive friction between nations and Wallabies coach Michael Cheika became the unlikely referee ally by describing World Rugby's actions as "unfair" to Joubert.

But the players are avoiding getting stuck in the middle, letting Cheika be the face of their defence and choosing to move on to their semi-final preparations.

Asked if the best way to deal with the Scotland fallout was to get on with the tournament, halfback Will Genia said: "It's irrelevant. We are still here, we won the game, we have another week to prepare.

"People can say what they want. We are just concentrating on Argentina.

"[People] can forget about it or talk about it all they want. We have forgotten about it, it doesn't matter. It's irrelevant."

The Wallabies got "somewhat positive" news on prop Scott Sio's shoulder injury and will give him until later in the week to prove his fitness.

Israel Folau and David Pocock did not train with the team on Tuesday, but the pair is expected to be ready to play against Argentina.

Winger Rob Horne is also available for selection for the first time since the Wallabies beat England three weeks ago after recovering from a shoulder injury that was initially thought to have ended his World Cup campaign.

Joubert has been overlooked for refereeing duties in the two semi-finals this weekend.

Wallabies assistant coach Stephen Larkham backed Cheika's defence of Joubert after he ruled a Scotland player to be offside despite the ball appearing to touch Australian halfback Nick Phipps.

"You can certainly look at every game this year and there was a contentious decision by a referee, whether it was in the first minute or the 80th minute, that you can probably harp back on," said World Cup-winner Larkham.

"We've had different ways of winning in this campaign so far and we got through that last game. There were some things we didn't do as well as we should have. There were things we got away with and things they got away with. We put that to bed and we'll move on to Argentina now."

The Wallabies have lost to Argentina just twice since 1997, but one of those defeats triggered the demise of Ewen McKenzie as coach last year.

Argentina are the dark-horse in the southern hemisphere battle for the World Cup title.

They survived a second-half scare to trounce Ireland 43-20 last weekend and have already beaten South Africa this year.

The Wallabies won a Rugby Championship battle 34-9 in July, but are refusing to take the Pumas lightly.

"At the end of the day we are concentrating on preparing for a semi-final of the Rugby World Cup against Argentina. All the other stuff is peripheral," Genia said.

"We were obviously disappointed in a lot of areas of the game [against Scotland]. Defensively our first-up tackles weren't good enough … and just our attacking ruck as well.

"Traditionally, having played [Argentina] before they are a very passionate side … but we are just concentrating on ourselves. There is so much room for improvement."

  • I don't blame the ref, I blame rugby for awarding 3 points for a penalty goal. Australia scored 5 tries to 3. It's only stupid three point penalty goals that kept Scotland in it.
Also their tries were a charge down, an intercept and a soft defensive error.
You would never see a game of league where a side cores 5 tries to 3 and loses. People like to see tries not boring penalty goals.
And don't get me started on the 3 point field goal. That is even more stupid. The rules of rugby shouldn't be called doctors and lawyers it should be called dumb and dumber.

    • so lets say we remove penalties or drop to 2 points, Australia run away with the game and nobody cares, game over, never talked about again. or say we keep it as it is an enjoy a tense and nail biting game that comes down to the last minute and has even non-rugby fans across the world talking about all week.

      i know which i prefer

    • Lets say you make a try 6 points & a penalty 1, then we can watch the Wallabies infringe deliberatly for 80min against Wales to stop a try being scored - so at the end of the day the ends justifies the means right?

Also the penalty against the Scots in the last min rightly or wrongly its all over now

A semi against Argentina because the draw was stacked to be England vs other finalist which you have the benifit of and are doing your best to something it up

    • Hey adamtheapprentice
Haven't you ever heard of the yellow card? If you infringed constantly you would lose players and end up being having tries scored against you.

  • As a Level II coach but at a fairly low competitive level I was taught to instil into players the notion that as many bad referee decisions go for your team as go against it.
I am quite sure that if such a decision had gone for Scotland they would have been more than happy to have accepted the outcome.
Then in measure we should not forget the kicks that Foley missed and if they had been successful then the result of the game would have been indisputable.
I once coached an U19s team in a final - where the law says they play for 70 minutes and the referee ran it for an extra 8 minutes of unlawful extra time and the winning team scored a try with a player who played the ball on a knock-on whilst lying on the ground in goal and offside. Try explaining the justice of that to players. Other than that the referee's decision is final.
Best we all get on now and enjoy the finals.
And of course hope that the Wallabies prevail.

    • The World Rugby need their head examined for releasing a statement about the final penalty in the Australia vs Scotland quarterfinlal. Without it the story would already be todays fish and chip wrapping but instead it gets another run. To pull apart one decision from a game is harsh when there where other penalties given that weren't given the forensic treatment.

      • World Rugby are thick. Hanging out their man to dry, who would ever want to be a ref? Where was World Rugby when the Scots beat Samoa with a dodgy knock-on before the try? Scotland didn't deserve to be there, not to mention the sudden overturning of a 3 week ban for dangerous play. World Rugby are so bent they always protect the Home Nations. The whingeing from up North has been appalling and embarrassing.
World Rugby should issue an apology to Joubert and Australia for disrupting preparations and stoking anti-Australian sentimentality.

      • Interesting that we have a Code of Conduct promulgated by the ARU but no doubt endorsed by "World Rugby"

I quote the Code ".... not to show unnecessary obvious dissension, displeasure or disapproval towards a referee, touch judge or other match official, his or her decision or generally following a decision of a match official"

Appalling response from the chief body in rugby though I guarantee if one of the "home" countries had benefited there would have been no such response.

        • The hype and famous Aussie optimism was well and truly alive. It had even sucked the tillable media into it BUT NOW IT IS CLEAR FOR EVERYONE TO SEE.

AUSTRALIA DO NOT DESERVE TO BE IN THE SEMI FINALS.

Haha... Once again not as good as you think you are.
