40 years of the F40PH! 2016 marks 40 years since the first F40PH locomotive rolled off the assembly line and I thought it only fitting to talk about the F40PH in an episode of Train Talk. We will talk about what the F40PH is, have a discussion on the locomotive's history, and then look at a few of the railroads that use F40's and commuter variants today. All aboard!

This is an experimental project. Initially, it ran on batteries but when we got it, those were gone. So, we replaced the batteries with a diesel engine which runs two generators that send direct electric current to the electric motor in the back. Not so much speed, but it has respectable pulling power. No clutch, no gearbox, only gas pedal, brakes, and a switch to go forward or reverse, super easy to drive. Sorry about the poor quality vid, I've used an android phone. Also, we are working on a second vehicle which is an old garden tractor. This thing has a gasoline engine which runs a generator... basically, it works on the same principle as the vehicle shown in this vid, only it's smaller. I will answer to any question regarding those two builds :).

This U.S. Navy Training Film is about the basic WW2 submarine structure and systems. It is a description of the pressure hulls, tanks and super-structure.
The submarine shown at the end of the film is the USS Tusk (SS-426), a Balao class submarine. She was the only ship of the United States Navy to be named for the tusk. Her keel was laid down on 23 August 1943 and she was launched on 8 July 1945. She is one of the last two operational submarines in the world built during World War 2.
The Balao-class submarines:
The Balao-class was a successful design of United States Navy submarine used during World War II, and with 120 units completed, the largest class of submarines in the United States Navy. An improvement on the earlier Gato-class, the Balao-class submarines had slight internal differences. The most significant improvement was the use of thicker, higher yield strength steel in the pressure hull skins and frames, which increased their test depth to 400 feet (120 m).

Diesel-electric transmission
Diesel-electric transmission, or diesel-electric powertrain is used by a number of vehicle and ship types for providing locomotion.
A diesel-electric transmission system includes a diesel engine connected to an electrical generator, creating electricity that powers electric traction motors. No clutch is required. Before diesel engines came into widespread use, a similar system, using a petrol (gasoline) engine and called petrol-electric or gas-electric, was sometimes used.
Diesel-electric transmission is used on railways by diesel electric locomotives and diesel electric multiple units, as electric motors are able to supply full torque at 0 RPM. Diesel-electric systems are also used in submarines and surface ships and some land vehicles.
In some high-efficiency applications, electrical energy may be stored in rechargeable batteries, in which case these vehicles can be considered as a class of hybrid electric vehicle.
Ships
The first diesel motorship was also the first diesel-electric ship, the Russian tanker Vandal from Branobel, which was launched in 1903. Steam turbine-electric propulsion has been in use since the 1920s (Tennessee-class battleships), using diesel-electric powerplants in surface ships has increased lately. The Finnish coastal defence ships Ilmarinen and Väinämöinen laid down in 1928–1929, were among the first surface ships to use diesel-electric transmission. Later, the technology was used in diesel powered icebreakers.

This U.S. Navy Training Film is about the basic WW2 submarine structure and systems. It is a description of the pressure hulls, tanks and super-structure.
The submarine shown at the end of the film is the USS Tusk (SS-426), a Balao class submarine. She was the only ship of the United States Navy to be named for the tusk. Her keel was laid down on 23 August 1943 and she was launched on 8 July 1945. She is one of the last two operational submarines in the world built during World War 2.
The Balao-class submarines:
The Balao-class was a successful design of United States Navy submarine used during World War II, and with 120 units completed, the largest class of submarines in the United States Navy. An improvement on the earlier Gato-class, the Balao-class submarines had slight internal differences. The most significant improvement was the use of thicker, higher yield strength steel in the pressure hull skins and frames, which increased their test depth to 400 feet (120 m).

To help put all this in context it's important to examine our situation and our requirements whilst living aboard. This alone has an impact on a couple of options so let's break it down a bit more.
We've been living aboard Esper for ten years and we spend most of our time at anchor. We've crossed a number of seas and plan to do so again soon but right now we are cruising in between anchorages, reefs and rocks. Sometimes the weather can get hairy and in the past we've had to run our engine for hours at a time in order to get ourselves out of predicaments.
We have cruised and plan to cruise some more remote places. These remote places are sometimes a hundred miles or more from human habitation. This has a significant impact on parts and availability.
We love our technology and run laptops, tablets, smartphones and have a number of items to charge throughout the day, not least cameras and drone batteries.
We watch movies, play music and have other creature comforts that means we consume a fair amount of amps over a 24 hour period.
So, we put high demands on our domestic battery bank and we do not day-sail between marinas. This means we are relying on the boat to keep our batteries topped up daily. We don't return to the mainland to plug in to the grid.
It's worth emphasising that, despite not wanting to admit it, we rely on our engine daily. Sailing is all very well but the engine is the heart of Esper and as important as the sails. Many of the places we have visited in the last ten years wouldn't have been accessible without the engine.

Mighty EMD monster with mammoth load slows down due to a red signal.
7) Pune Kamakhya Premium Special with offlink CNB WAG-7 bends a curve, crosses my DEMU and overtakes a freight load. Finally we got a starter after being made to wait for 20mins and once again another slow EMU does good speed. Railfan Sriram SN was with me that day.
DEMU is Diesel - Electric Multiple Unit running on electric traction motors and are used for running in Semi-Urban and Rural areas usually for daily commuter traffic.
The old Push Pull train has now given way to DEMU from 15/12/2014. Almost 3 rakes of DEMU have been given. So I hope the frequency of these trains on Diva - Vasai route should increase since this route has become very busy and runs jampacked.
