Chiefs originally began as a two-piece back in January of 2012 in Phoenix, AZ, but after years of releasing demos, touring and playing often around the Phoenix Valley, the duo made the decision to relocate to San Diego, CA. Shortly after, they released a four-song demo entitled Buffalo Roam, and did numerous short west-coast tours to support it. Eventually the group became a three-piece with the permanent addition of bassist Jeff Podeszwik, who filled out the low-end of the band and transformed their sound. Excellent 70's styled hard rock with a doomy outer shell. Singer reminds me of a more melodic Page Hamilton. Tomorrow's Over is the debut album from the trio that is Chiefs. It is more than an album, its a statement. A statement that they are here to stay, and with the right push they can really be a significant player in the Stoner/Desert rock genre. The guitars are gnarly, raw but still polished and warm. And this is a huge benefit as the tracks are very riff based and with this sound every detail shines through the mix. There’s just enough fuzz to get that classic Stoner feel, but just enough to retain the details and groove. The guitar work on this album is very good. Five tracks into the album, every track has its own identity, groove and feel. But still it is very coherent. And right about now is when most full length albums rise to the occasion or fall under pressure. Tomorrow’s Over rises, the 6th track Peel is the highlight of the album. And its placed in just the right spot, just when you want a kick and slightly increased tempo, Chiefs gives you just that. Grunge influences are clear from the first notes of the first track; each song is fuzz heavy with some drop tuning on the heavier songs. It feels progressive yet throws back to grunge and 90's hard rock at the same time. The throw back is not overwhelming and neither is it nostalgic. Attitude is as heavy as the bass through most of the album, coming through in the vocals, which maintain steady power in all eleven songs. Instruments also keep it cranked to 11, guitars are full bodied and are kept crunchy, bass is heavy and doesn't get lost under the drums which are powerful but nuanced and adaptive to mood from song to song. Pacing and tone match a metal album, which works, it keeps the energy moving even on the few slower songs in the mix. In tone and catchiness, they envision a post-Kyuss incarnation of Helmet, more heavy rock than noise, but with a few-frills undertone that comes through in their verse/chorus tradeoffs, in the turns of mood between “Like a Match”and “Ride” near the start of the record and in Valle‘s vocal approach, which recalls Page Hamilton circa “Unsung.” One could pick any number of tracks to represent the whole of Tomorrow’s Over, since they feed into a central vibe that persists across the span, but “Vovi” is a particularly efficient encapsulation of what Chiefs are able to make work so well in dealing with familiar elements and crafting something concrete and engaging from them. The crunch of their tones is immediate, but “Vovi” smoothly shifts between open-sounding verse thud and the hooks of its instrumental bridge and subsequent chorus. While grooving, it asks little more of the listener than participation in that process, as Chiefs remain wholly unpretentious throughout Tomorrow’s Over. Solid outing from this superb band, riffs that can cut through steel, super solid vocals and a rhythm section that are so tight they can hardly breathe. 1. Buffalo Roam 2. Like A Match 3. Ride 4.
