Sutherland Area

The Sutherland area is also referred to as "the shire" is a local government area about 26km south of the Sydney CBD and is about a 20 minute drive from Sydney.

The Sutherland area was home to an aboriginal community who used to use clay to make body paint, and medicine. The tribes rock paintings, engravings and rock shelters are existent throughout the Shire. The suburb Kurnell within the Sutherland Shire was the first landing site of Captain James Cook in 1770.

The Sutherland area has pristine beaches, four national parks, and has a major shopping hub Westfield Miranda fair. The area sees approximately 1.1 million visitors each year and has the only beach that is accessible by train.

There have been many television shows have been filmed in Sutherland including Puberty Blues, Please marry my boy, biggest loser, underbelly, and Australia's next top model. It also is the home for Cronulla Sharks, a professional rugby league team.
