Steen Rasmussen
Steen Rasmussen (born 7 July 1955) is a Danish physicist mainly working in the areas of artificial life and complex systems. He is currently a professor in physics and a center director at University of Southern Denmark as well as an external research professor at the Santa Fe Institute. His formal training was at the Technical University of Denmark (1985 PhD in physics of complex systems) and University of Copenhagen (philosophy). He spent 20 years as a researcher at Los Alamos National Laboratory (1988-2007) the last five years as a leader of the Self-Organized Systems team. He has been part of the Santa Fe Institute since 1988.
The main scientific effort of Steen Rasmussen over the last ten years has been to explore, understand and construct a transition from nonliving to living materials. Bridging this gap requires an interdisciplinary scientific effort, which is why he has assembled, sponsored and lead research teams in the US, across Europe and in Denmark. He became a scientific team leader in 2002 at Los Alamos National Laboratory, USA, and he has since held research leadership positions at the Santa Fe Institute, University of Copenhagen and University of Southern Denmark. Since late 2007 he has been the director of the Center for Fundamental Living Technology at University of Southern Denmark.

Josefine Cronholm
Josefine Cronholm (born 1971) is a celebrated Swedish jazz vocalist and singer/songwriter, who has won numerous awards. Her debut album Wild Garden was released in 2002. She also provided a cover of The Carpenters' Close to you for the film MirrorMask. She sang on the Django Bates Album Quiet Nights in 1998.

Jonas Johansen
Jonas Johansen (born 22 March 1985) is a Norwegian footballer who signed for Tromsdalen in 2010, Johansen's strongest position is central defender but can also play in defence midfield and attacking midfield. In his career he has played for the likes of Tromsø, Haugesund and Kongsvinger.
He took part in the 2006 VIVA World Cup in Occitania, representing Sápmi, who eventually went on to win the tournament.
He is the son of Trond Johansen.

Meet Mania Akbari, who is considered one of the most controversial filmmakers in Iran due to the themes she deals with, such as infidelity and homosexuality. Here she reflects on how something poetic can be found in even the fiercest dictatorship. BornHack 2016 - Thomas S. Rasmussen - Technical and Political Aspects of Running Uncensored DNS
The UncensoredDNS project was started almost 7 years ago, back in November 2009. People were asking for recommendations for alternatives to their ISP's censored DNS servers. Back then OpenDNS did NXDOMAIN redirection, an advertising trick where misspelled nonexistant domains are redirected to a search page with ads instead of returning an NXDOMAIN error. They also didn't have ipv6 or DNSSEC, both of which are mandatory on a modern DNS server, even back in 2009. Even if Google DNS had existed back then I wouldn't have felt comfortable recommending them either. While they do run a stable, fast and largely uncensored service, I am not convinced that it is a good idea to hand over all your DNS lookups to Google. Meet Mania Akbari, who is considered one of the most controversial filmmakers in Iran due to the themes she deals with, such as infidelity and homosexuality. Here she reflects on how something poetic can be found in even the fiercest dictatorship.
Akbari ponders on how it is possible that the “romantic and sensitive soul of poetry” can exist alongside an aggressive dictatorship such as that in Iran: “It is possible that the voice coming out of my country, Iran, is a very aggressive voice, but there are also some sensitive voices to find. I find it sad to say that this is a product of aggression, but it exists alongside of it.”
Beauty and aggression are inextricably intertwined, and sometimes what you see is not what you expected to see: “We don't’ know that the voice we hear from a country matches the true picture. We have to approach the situation to see how much beauty and sensitivity there is in its aggressive nature. Conversely, how much aggression is found in the nature of beauty and sensitivity.” Akbari feels that one simply cannot separate aggression from sensitivity in any country, and that Iran – despite its strong dictatorship – is also a country where people are sensitive and poetic and seek solutions or comfort in the works of great poets such as Hafez.
Mania Akbari (b. 1974 in Tehran, Iran) is an internationally acclaimed Iranian filmmaker, actress, painter and writer, whose works deal with themes such as sexual identity, women, marriage, abortion, infidelity and lesbianism. Because of the themes discussed in her films and her opposition to censorship, she is considered one of the most controversial filmmakers in Iran. Her first feature-length film ’20 Fingers’ (2004), which was a study of marriage and sexual identity, won the best film prize at the Venice Film Festival’s Digital Cinema section. During the production of her film ‘From Tehran to London’ (2012-13), Iranian authorities arrested her distributor, and Akbari chose to flee to London. Retrospectives of her films have been featured at international venues such as BFI, Oldenburg International Film Festival and the Danish Film Institute. I care a lot about online freedom, IT politics and Internet legislation, which has inspired me to run uncensoreddns.org and hushfile.it in my sparetime, among other projects. For the second year now I’ve attended the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas where hundreds of thousands of attendees descend on the city to see the latest in consumer technology and, increasingly, all types of technology. This year had several highlight areas: Internet of Things, Smart(er/ish) appliances, fitness technology, “future” cars and mobility, drones, and so much more. Mania Akbari has made films that have upset the religious establishment in Iran, and as a result she lives in exile. But this has not prevented her from continuing to make her controversial films. Watch her talk about being a filmmaker in this extensive interview.
“I think that painting is my father and the products of this father are cinema and video art.” Akbari started out as a painter, but found that she needed more space and possibilities in order to express the things she wanted to convey: “My sense was that this medium and this father demanded release one day for me to be able to tell my stories.”
The pendulum-like play between dreams and reality is of great interest to Akbari, who feels that one can uncover meaning in the space between the two: “I always think if you were to completely lose your dreams, perhaps your mental death has arrived. Likewise, if you are in a constant dream state and lose a sense of reality the effect will be the same.”
Akbari stresses that though she is no “cinema lover”, she still acknowledges cinema's ability to serve as a tool for a story to reach the public and “transform it from a geographical and simple story to a concept.” Through this the viewer can “see with his or her eyes, hear the sound, read the subtitles – and a triangular subliminal relationship is born.”
Mania Akbari (b. 1974 in Tehran, Iran) is an internationally acclaimed Iranian filmmaker, actress, painter and writer, whose works deal with themes such as sexual identity, women, marriage, abortion, infidelity and lesbianism. Because of the themes discussed in her films and her opposition to censorship, she is considered one of the most controversial filmmakers in Iran. Her first feature-length film ’20 Fingers’ (2004), which was a study of marriage and sexual identity, won the best film prize at the Venice Film Festival’s Digital Cinema section. During the production of her film ‘From Tehran to London’ (2012-13), Iranian authorities arrested her distributor, and Akbari chose to flee to London. Retrospectives of her films have been featured at international venues such as BFI, Oldenburg International Film Festival and the Danish Film Institute. "I had to squeeze the music out of that thing!" Feel the good vibes in this laid back interview with legendary American avant-garde composer and noise-guitarist Glenn Branca, who has influenced bands like Sonic Youth.
"I want people to do what they want to do, not what culture wants them to do. " In this interview Glenn Branca talks about how he learned to play on a guitar which was really cheap and hard to play, and how he feels lucky to have been a young man in the '60s, when there was an explosion of good music and lots of amazing sounds to get into. Branca is always looking for new sounds and his primary interest is "opening music up to ambiguity," he says. We all see things in our own way Branca adds, "the subconscious is a very important part of my music." Branca's aim is to confuse the conscious mind, breaking it open, "allowing us to access the subconscious."
Glenn Branca (b.1948) is known for his experimental use of volume, alternative guitar tunings, repetition, droning, and the harmonic series. In 2008 he was awarded an unrestricted grant from the Foundation for Contemporary Arts.

BornHack 2016 - Thomas S. Rasmussen - Technical and Political Aspects of Running Uncensored DNS
The UncensoredDNS project was started almost 7 years ago, back in November 2009. People were asking for recommendations for alternatives to their ISP's censored DNS servers. Back then OpenDNS did NXDOMAIN redirection, an advertising trick where misspelled nonexistant domains are redirected to a search page with ads instead of returning an NXDOMAIN error. They also didn't have ipv6 or DNSSEC, both of which are mandatory on a modern DNS server, even back in 2009. Even if Google DNS had existed back then I wouldn't have felt comfortable recommending them either. While they do run a stable, fast and largely uncensored service, I am not convinced that it is a good idea to hand over all your DNS lookups to Google. Mania Akbari has made films that have upset the religious establishment in Iran, and as a result she lives in exile. But this has not prevented her from continuing to make her controversial films. Watch her talk about being a filmmaker in this extensive interview.
“I think that painting is my father and the products of this father are cinema and video art.” Akbari started out as a painter, but found that she needed more space and possibilities in order to express the things she wanted to convey: “My sense was that this medium and this father demanded release one day for me to be able to tell my stories.”
The pendulum-like play between dreams and reality is of great interest to Akbari, who feels that one can uncover meaning in the space between the two: “I always think if you were to completely lose your dreams, perhaps your mental death has arrived. Likewise, if you are in a constant dream state and lose a sense of reality the effect will be the same.”
Akbari stresses that though she is no “cinema lover”, she still acknowledges cinema's ability to serve as a tool for a story to reach the public and “transform it from a geographical and simple story to a concept.” Through this the viewer can “see with his or her eyes, hear the sound, read the subtitles – and a triangular subliminal relationship is born.”
Mania Akbari (b. 1974 in Tehran, Iran) is an internationally acclaimed Iranian filmmaker, actress, painter and writer, whose works deal with themes such as sexual identity, women, marriage, abortion, infidelity and lesbianism. Because of the themes discussed in her films and her opposition to censorship, she is considered one of the most controversial filmmakers in Iran. Her first feature-length film ’20 Fingers’ (2004), which was a study of marriage and sexual identity, won the best film prize at the Venice Film Festival’s Digital Cinema section. During the production of her film ‘From Tehran to London’ (2012-13), Iranian authorities arrested her distributor, and Akbari chose to flee to London. Retrospectives of her films have been featured at international venues such as BFI, Oldenburg International Film Festival and the Danish Film Institute. The UncensoredDNS project was started almost 7 years ago, back in November 2009. People were asking for recommendations for alternatives to their ISP's censored DNS servers.
Back then OpenDNS did NXDOMAIN redirection, an advertising trick where misspelled nonexistant domains are redirected to a search page with ads instead of returning an NXDOMAIN error. They also didn't have ipv6 or DNSSEC, both of which are mandatory on a modern DNS server, even back in 2009.
Even if Google DNS had existed back then I wouldn't have felt comfortable recommending them either. While they do run a stable, fast and largely uncensored service, I am not convinced that it is a good idea to hand over all your DNS lookups to Google.
All this prompted me to do something about the situation so I started UncensoredDNS with help from friends. I also give talks to explain why I am doing this, since people naturally have an easier time trusting a service if they know who is behind it.
The talk be a state-of-the-dns type thing, with some political but mostly technical content. The technical content will include statistics, background and status on the anycast project, dnscrypt, the openvpn project, the move to ansible, the new dns-over-http proposal, and more.

Thomas Steen Rasmussen (born 1979) is a system architect and Unix administrator with a preference for FreeBSD and a healthy interest in network and system security. Developer with experience in various languages, currently with a preference for Python, specifically Django. When I work with databases I prefer PostgreSQL. I care a lot about online freedom, IT politics and Internet legislation, which has inspired me to run uncensoreddns.org and hushfile.it in my sparetime, among other projects. The UncensoredDNS project was started almost 7 years ago, back in November 2009. People were asking for recommendations for alternatives to their ISP's censored DNS servers.
Back then OpenDNS did NXDOMAIN redirection, an advertising trick where misspelled nonexistant domains are redirected to a search page with ads instead of returning an NXDOMAIN error. They also didn't have ipv6 or DNSSEC, both of which are mandatory on a modern DNS server, even back in 2009.
Even if Google DNS had existed back then I wouldn't have felt comfortable recommending them either. While they do run a stable, fast and largely uncensored service, I am not convinced that it is a good idea to hand over all your DNS lookups to Google.
All this prompted me to do something about the situation so I started UncensoredDNS with help from friends. I also give talks to explain why I am doing this, since people naturally have an easier time trusting a service if they know who is behind it.
The talk be a state-of-the-dns type thing, with some political but mostly technical content. The technical content will include statistics, background and status on the anycast project, dnscrypt, the openvpn project, the move to ansible, the new dns-over-http proposal, and more.
