Hans Vascht
Jesse Bauman is strong like a bull, smart like a street car. He lives in Kitchener, Ontario, where he works at an emergency food hamper program. He has an MA in political theory from McGill, but doesn’t really speak French. He grew up with his white family on a small organic farm in southern Ontario, where Huron, Wendat, Ojibway and Mississauga peoples probably hunted, gathered and farmed. When he was little, his grandma called him a "hans vascht," which is Pennsylvania Dutch for wily rascal, or 'sh*thead.' Either way, he’s glad it stuck. Follow him on Twitter at
