The city suffered badly during the war and much of its population left, but recovery has been under way for some time now. There are some excellent B&Bs; in town, so if you want to experience village life in Karabakh consider spending a couple of nights up here, as it makes a good base for exploring the rest of the region.

The political status of the Nagorno-Karabakh region remains unresolved. Since 1991, it has been largely controlled by the self-proclaimed Republic of Artsakh, a de facto independent entity. The region, however, is internationally recognized as de jure part of Azerbaijan, although it has not exercised power over most of the region since 1991. Since the end of the Nagorno-Karabakh War in 1994, representatives of the governments of Armenia and Azerbaijan have been holding peace talks mediated by the OSCE Minsk Group on the region's disputed status.

Nagorno-Karabakh is a mountainous area in the Caucasus region between Europe and Asia. For more than 30 years, it's been locked in a conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan. The fight between the two countries began in the early 20th century but became a frozen conflict for 60 years while the whole region was under the control of the Soviet Union.
When the Soviet Union fell, newfound independence sparked a brutal six-year war in the region, where Armenia emerged victorious. From 1994 to 2020, Armenia controlled Nagorno-Karabakh, while Azerbaijan rebuilt its military. Fighting erupted again in summer 2020, and Azerbaijan went on the offensive — eventually capturing most of Nagorno-Karabakh and dramatically reshaping the region.

The Nagorno-Karabakh-conflict involving Armenia, the unrecognised Republic of Artsakh and Azerbaijan has been described as one of many frozen conflicts worldwide. However, the latest developments of 2020 have demonstrated that the ice seemed to have melted. In truth, the conflict was heading into the direction of escalation since at least 2016, as the ongoing peace process has yielded little to no results. This video is a simplified summary and analysis of what is going on in this conflict: How did it start? What is it about? And who is involved? Nagorno-Karabakh Republic
Nagorno-Karabakh, officially the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic (NKR; Armenian: Լեռնային Ղարաբաղի Հանրապետություն Lernayin Gharabaghi Hanrapetut'yun), Artsakh Republic or Republic of Artsakh (Armenian: Արցախի Հանրապետություն Arts'akhi Hanrapetut'yun), is a republic in the South Caucasus recognised only by three non-United Nations (UN) states. Recognised by the UN as part of Azerbaijan, Nagorno-Karabakh controls most of the territory of the former Nagorno-Karabakh Autonomous Oblast and some of the surrounding area, giving it a border with Armenia to the west and Iran to the south.
The predominantly Armenian-populated region of Nagorno-Karabakh was claimed by both the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic and the First Republic of Armenia when both countries became independent in 1918. After the Soviet Union established control over the area, it created the Nagorno-Karabakh Autonomous Oblast (NKAO) within the Azerbaijan SSR in 1923. In the final years of the Soviet Union, the region re-emerged as a source of dispute between Armenia and Azerbaijan. In 1991, a referendum held in the NKAO and the neighbouring Shahumian region resulted in a declaration of independence. Large-scale ethnic conflict led to the 1991–1994 Nagorno-Karabakh War, which ended with a ceasefire that left the current borders.

NKR (NDB)
NKR is the callsign of an NDB with a range of 50 NM at Leimen-Ochsenbach, Germany, situated at 49°12' 12" N and 8°44'E. NKR, which transmits on the frequency 292 kHz, uses as antenna a 20 metre tall free-standing lattice tower with a weight of 1200 kilograms, which is insulated against ground. The tower which was built at the 1970s is equipped for its electrical lengthing with a horizontal cross on its top. The output power of the transmitter is 100 watts, but, because its gain is only -10 dB, its ERP is just 10 watts.

Shushi (Şuşa to Azeris) stands on a plateau 9km from Stepanakert, with high walls and views over a wide swath of central Karabakh. The city was once a centre of Armenian and Azeri art and culture, and during the 19th century it was one of the largest towns in the South Caucasus with a multicultural population and a reputation for tolerance and peaceful coexistence. The city suffered badly during the war and much of its population left, but recovery has been under way for some time now. There are some excellent B&Bs; in town, so if you want to experience village life in Karabakh consider spending a couple of nights up here, as it makes a good base for exploring the rest of the region.

The political status of the Nagorno-Karabakh region remains unresolved. Since 1991, it has been largely controlled by the self-proclaimed Republic of Artsakh, a de facto independent entity. The region, however, is internationally recognized as de jure part of Azerbaijan, although it has not exercised power over most of the region since 1991. Since the end of the Nagorno-Karabakh War in 1994, representatives of the governments of Armenia and Azerbaijan have been holding peace talks mediated by the OSCE Minsk Group on the region's disputed status.
