Checkpoint Charlie (or "Checkpoint C") was the name given by the Western Allies to the best-known Berlin Wall crossing point between East Berlin and West Berlin, during the Cold War.
GDR leader Walter Ulbricht agitated and maneuvered to get the Soviet Union's permission to construct the Berlin Wall in 1961, to stop Eastern Bloc emigration westward through the Soviet border system, preventing escape across the city sector border from East Berlin to West Berlin. Checkpoint Charlie became a symbol of the Cold War, representing the separation of East and West. Soviet and American tanks briefly faced each other at the location during the Berlin Crisis of 1961.
After the dissolution of the Eastern Bloc and the reunification of Germany, the building at Checkpoint Charlie became a tourist attraction. It is now located in the Allied Museum in the Dahlem neighborhood of Berlin.
By the early 1950s, the Soviet method of restricting emigration was emulated by most of the rest of the Eastern Bloc, including East Germany. However, in occupied Germany, until 1952, the lines between East Germany and the western occupied zones remained easily crossed in most places. Consequently, the inner German border between the two German states was closed and a barbed-wire fence erected.

Vom einstigen Checkpoint Charlie blieb nichts übrig.

Checkpoint Charlie was the name given by the Western Allies to the best-known Berlin Wall crossing point between East Berlin and West Berlin during the Cold War. The Soviet Union prompted the erection of the Berlin Wall in 1961 to stem the flow of Eastern Bloc emigration westward through what had become a "loophole" in the Soviet border system, preventing escape over the city sector border from East Berlin to West Berlin. Checkpoint Charlie became a symbol of the Cold War, representing the separation of east and west, and for some East Germans a gateway to freedom. Soviet and American tanks briefly faced off at the location during the Berlin Crisis of 1961. Known as Grenzübergang Friedrichstraße in German, the English language name 'Checkpoint Charlie' was the colloquial name for a crossing point between the former East and West Berlin (Russian and American sectors of the divided city). Although it first came into being in 1945, after the 1961 erection of the wall it became one of the few crossing points between the two sections of the divided city. It was restricted to military officers and non Germans only. Germans had to use other crossing points. It was located at the southern part of Friedrichstrasse - near to Kochstrasse U-Bahn station in West Berlin, with Stadtmitte being the nearest open U-Bahn station in East Berlin. Nowadays very little remains of this crossing point - the wall, watch towers, wooden shed used by the US m...

The city has an eclectic mix of architectural styles; everything from the modern dome of the Reichstag to that of the old Berlin Cathedral. The Chapel of Reconciliation is the spiritual heart of the Berlin Wall Memorial. The DDR Museum shows what life was like in East Germany during Socialist rule. Checkpoint Charlie was the Cold War's most famous border crossing; today the adjacent museum describes the clever ways in which Berliners defected from East to West. Berlin's East Side Gallery is one of the largest outdoor art exhibits in the world. The Holocaust Memorial serves as a poignant reminder of World War II. Rolling out before the Brandenburg G...

Berlin Brigade Army Soldiers Casey Beymer and Michael Rafferty give a Soldiers view of Berlin in October of 1988. Part of this video was seen by 18,000 people on YouTube. This is the video in it's entirety. Both Soldiers were part of the 287th Military Police Company. Beymer continued his law enforcement career after the Army. Rafferty retired as a Soldier. Hope you enjoy and I apologive for the inappropriate language. We were pretty "HIGH SPEED" during that time.
On 22 June 1990, Allied Checkpoint Charlie was closed and lifted away by crane. I think I might be one of the only former MP's that has a copy of this ceremony. I share it for those Soldiers that worked in Berlin and don't have a copy. Brown/Steffan/Walsh/Hadley/Baldwin/Doyle/Campbell/and of course ME (Rafferty) served at the Checkpoint with the 287th Military Police Company....During the Fall of the Berlin Wall and German Reunification. Brown/Newton/Baldwin/Rashke/Robertson/Hadley/and (ME) Rafferty were the Americans within the honor platoon. SSG Yount NCOIC Berlin Access and MAJ Godek OIC Berlin Access led the American Contingent.

Over the concrete border, there's a girl who knows my
name
And only Checkpoint Charlie has the way for us to meet
again
We thought we knew what all the fighting years were for
But that was long ago before the cold war
She waits yet another day
With dreams like my own
For a chance to be back with me home
Checkpoint Charlie - open up your gates for me
Let me set my baby free - Checkpoint Charlie
Checkpoint Charlie, won't you let her back to me?
Home is where she need to be - Checkpoint Charlie
Checkpoint Charlie
Letters they string together with the memories of home
Of lovers who need each other
But the rules of men have hearts of stone
We'd always talk about our dreams as I recall
But that was long ago, before they built the wall
Over the concrete bordrer
She waits yet another day, with dreams like my own
For a chance to be back with me, home
Checkpoint Charlie - open up your gates for me
Let me set my baby free - Checkpoint Charlie
Checkpoint Charlie, won't you let her back to me?
Home is where she need to be - Checkpoint Charlie
Checkpoint Charlie
