STORY: Thousands of Real Madrid fans gathered at Cibeles
Fountain in the Spanish capital on Sunday (May 29) to celebrate the club's
Champion's League victory over Atletico Madrid in
Milan's
San Siro Stadium on Saturday (May 28) evening.
Cristiano Ronaldo's winning penalty in Real Madrid's 5-3 shootout victory over Atletico sent supporters into a frenzy of jubilant celebrations.
The team is on its way back from Milan and will travel to Cibeles from the
Bernabeu on an open top bus upon arrival, as supporters wait partying till the wee hours of the morning.
Supporters at
Cibeles said the game was intense.
"The match was very intense, I suffered, Atletico made things complicated and then in the end in the penalty lottery allowed us to be victorious,"
Raul Jimenez said.
"We were so nervous, but it was so amazing! We won!" another fan,
Theresa, said.
The Champions League final had finished 1-1 after extra-time with
Sergio Ramos having bundled the ball home to give
Real the lead in the 15th minute.
Antoine Griezmann missed a penalty at the start of the second half for Atletico when he fired his shot against the bar.
Atletico, beaten in their two previous final appearances, including the most recent against Real in 2014, suffered a series of let-offs before substitute
Yannick Carrasco rifled in the equaliser in the
79th minute to send the game into extra time.
The challenges came in thick and fast early on and Atletico gave away two free kicks in dangerous positions.
Juanfran missed Atletico's fourth penalty in the shootout and
Ronaldo converted to seal victory for Real.
In little more than four months in charge,
Coach Zinedine Zidane has pulled Real back from the brink to where they feel they belong: European Champions.
Guiding Real to victory over Madrid rivals Atletico will have earned
Zidane another place in the club's record books to go with his history on the pitch and cement his name in the hearts of Real supporters.
"Zinedine Zidane is really a legend. He took over Real Madrid and made them champions. He's an incredible coach and has taken them to victory. It's an unforgettable night in Madrid," French tourist
Vanessa said, as she celebrated at Cibeles with her friends.
With the 2016 title, Real makes history winning its 11th European title.
