The gray wolf or grey wolf (Canis lupus), also known as the timber wolf or western wolf, is a canid native to the wilderness and remote areas of North America and Eurasia. It is the largest extant member of its family, with males averaging 43–45 kg (95–99 lb), and females 36–38.5 kg (79–85 lb). Like the red wolf, it is distinguished from other Canis species by its larger size and less pointed features, particularly on the ears and muzzle. Its winter fur is long and bushy, and predominantly a mottled gray in color, although nearly pure white, red, or brown to black also occur. As of 2005, 37 subspecies of C. lupus are recognised by MSW3.
The gray wolf is the second most specialised member of the genus Canis, after the Ethiopian wolf, as demonstrated by its morphological adaptations to hunting large prey, its more gregarious nature, and its highly advanced expressive behavior. It is nonetheless closely related enough to smaller Canis species, such as the eastern wolf, coyote and golden jackal to produce fertile hybrids. Its closest relative is the domestic dog, with which it shared a common European ancestor which likely diverged 40,000 years ago. It is the only species of Canis to have a range encompassing both the Old and New Worlds, and originated in Eurasia during the Pleistocene, colonizing North America on at least three separate occasions during the Rancholabrean. It is a social animal, travelling in nuclear families consisting of a mated pair, accompanied by the pair's adult offspring. The gray wolf is typically an apex predator throughout its range, with only humans and tigers posing a serious threat to it. It feeds primarily on large ungulates, though it also eats smaller animals, livestock, carrion, and garbage.
A river is a natural flowing watercourse, usually freshwater, flowing towards an ocean, sea, lake or another river. In some cases a river flows into the ground and becomes dry at the end of its course without reaching another body of water. Small rivers can be referred to using names such as stream, creek, brook, rivulet, and rill. There are no official definitions for the generic term river as applied to geographic features, although in some countries or communities a stream is defined by its size. Many names for small rivers are specific to geographic location; examples are "run" in some parts of the United States, "burn" in Scotland and northeast England, and "beck" in northern England. Sometimes a river is defined as being larger than a creek, but not always: the language is vague.
Rivers are part of the hydrological cycle. Water generally collects in a river from precipitation through a drainage basin from surface runoff and other sources such as groundwater recharge, springs, and the release of stored water in natural ice and snowpacks (e.g. from glaciers). Potamology is the scientific study of rivers while limnology is the study of inland waters in general.
Bass fishing is the activity of angling for the North American gamefish known colloquially as the black bass. There are numerous black bass species considered as gamefish in North America, including largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides), smallmouth bass (Micropterus dolomieui), spotted bass or Kentucky bass (Micropterus punctulatus), and Guadalupe bass (order Perciformes).
Modern bass fishing has evolved into a multibillion-dollar industry. The sport has changed drastically since its beginnings in the late 19th century. From humble beginnings, the black bass has become the second most specifically sought-after game fish in the United States. The sport has driven the development of all manner of fishing gear, including rods, reels, lines, lures, electronic depth and fish-finding instruments, drift boats, float tubes, and specialized bass boats.
All black bass are well known as strong fighters and are fished recreationally. Depending upon species and various other factors such as water quality and availability of food, black bass may be found in lakes, reservoirs, ponds, rivers, streams, creeks, even roadside ditches. Largemouth are known for their greater overall size and resistance when hooked, favoring short, powerful runs and escape to cover such as submerged logs or weedbeds, while smallmouth bass tend to jump more and fight aggressively on the surface when hooked, in order to throw the hook.

This week on Larry Smith Outdoors, Larry and friends are up on the Wolf River; one of the most popular spring walleye fisheries in the midwest. It's the annual spring run, and the boys are in search of a few eaters; as well as a shot at a trophy pre-spawn female. Larry also has the unique opportunity to be a guest in the shock boat with the Wisconsin DNR as they tag walleyes from the highly-protected spawning marshes of the upper Wolf River. Enjoy a little science and conservation with the fish catching action this week on Larry Smith Outdoors!

Video Credit: John Faucher, New London Press Star/Multi-Media Channels, LLC (www.waupacanow.com) Members of the New London Fire Department rescued a teenage boy at 6:40 p.m. Friday, March 20. According to rescue workers at the scene, the boy was trying to cross an ice dam near the Pearl Street dam on the Wolf River when the ice broke. A current carried the the boy downstream toward the Shawano Street bridge where an attempt was made to rescue him by dropping a life jacket on a rope. The current was too fast for the boy to hold onto the life jacket without falling into the river. Rescue workers and neighbors came out on boats and pulled the boy to safety.
Frank and his nephew, Dan head north to the famous Wolf River, in Fremont, WI, which is known for the White Bass run in the spring and in the fall. This was filmed on the weekend of August 29 and 30, 2015. We stayed out for the weekend in hopes of the bite being on for both days. Fish were caught with all kinds of presentations. Both smallmouth bass and a few largemouth bass were caught along with a white bass, and a dog fish on a spinner bait. The bass were caught on topwater poppers, buzz baits, frogs, worms both wacky rigged and texas rigged, and tubes. It was sure fun putting some post-spawn walleyes in the boat here on the Winnebago System, specifically the Wolf River! With the water temps and the huge numbers of forage in the water, these fish are sure taking their sweet time getting home. This was an interesting trip to say the least, a couple limits of walleyes and a broken pole to boot! I must have stepped on the rod at one point or maybe its from me tucking into the cleat on the boat? Very weird area to break. Who knows, at least I got the fish! Hope everyone is having an awesome start to the open water season, no matter where you find yourself!
