Paul Richard LePage (born October 9, 1948) is an American businessman and Republican Party politician who has served as the 74th Governor of Maine since 2011.
LePage grew up on the streets of Lewiston after leaving a poor home environment at the age of 11. After some initial difficulty entering college due to French being his first language, he obtained a college degree from Husson College. He served as general manager of the 14-store discount chain Marden's Surplus and Salvage from 1996 through 2011. He served as a city councilor in Waterville, Maine for two terms before serving as Mayor of Waterville (2003–11). LePage was elected governor of Maine with a plurality in a five-candidate race in 2010 and was re-elected with a stronger plurality in a three-candidate election in 2014. LePage has made eliminating Maine's income tax, fighting illegal drugs, and education reforms such as charter schools high priorities for his administration, even to the point where he has vetoed bills regardless of their merits to pressure the Maine Legislature to implement his proposals. He has also drawn attention for controversial statements he has made about various subjects, his dislike of Maine newspapers, and administrative actions he has done.
Rachel Anne Maddow (i/ˈmædoʊ/, born April 1, 1973) is an American television host, political commentator, and author. She hosts a nightly television show, The Rachel Maddow Show, on MSNBC. Her syndicated talk radio program of the same name aired on Air America Radio. Maddow is the first openly gay anchor to host a major prime-time news program in the United States. She holds a doctorate in politics from Oxford University.
Asked about her political views by the Valley Advocate, Maddow replied, "I'm undoubtedly a liberal, which means that I'm in almost total agreement with the Eisenhower-era Republican party platform."
Maddow was born in Castro Valley, California. Her father, Robert B. "Bob" Maddow, is a former United States Air Force captain who resigned his commission the year before her birth and found civilian work as a lawyer for the East Bay Municipal Utility District. Her mother, Elaine Maddow (née Gosse), is a school program administrator. She has one older brother, David. Her paternal grandfather was from an Eastern European Jewish family (the original family surname being "Medwedof"), while her paternal grandmother was of Dutch (Protestant) background; her mother, originally from Newfoundland, Canada, is of English and Irish ancestry. Maddow has stated that her family is "very, very Catholic," and she grew up in a community that her mother has described as "very conservative." Maddow was a competitive athlete and participated in three sports in high school: volleyball, basketball, and swimming. Referencing John Hughes films, she has described herself as being "a cross between the jock and the antisocial girl" in high school.

Paul LePage (R) thought he had been too subtle in expressing his views on black and Hispanic people in the past. How else to explain what he said in a Friday press conference while discussing a threatening, expletive-filled voicemail that he’d left for a state legislator? Maine Gov. Paul LePage left an expletive-laced voicemail for a state lawmaker that goaded him to "prove that I'm a racist" after a series of controversial comments once again put the governor in the news.
Maine Gov. Paul LePage just cannot seem to keep his (racist) foot out of his mouth. Earlier this year, he made racist remarks about "guys with the name D-Money, Smoothie, Shifty" who liked to "sell their heroin" and "impregnate a young white girl." In April, he said that Indian workers are the "hardest" and "the worst ones" to understand. LePage also claimed that 90% of the drug dealers arrested in Maine were black or Hispanic, and he had a "binder" of mugshots to prove it. He left home at 11 after a rough childhood, spending time on the streets, yet managed to finish both high school and college. He later went on to work as a Pepsi-Cola truck driver, at a meat-packing plant and as a short-order cook. This is the story of Gov. Paul LePage, who, in a little more than six months, has ushered in sweeping reforms for Maine—a record of accomplishments it might take other governors years to achieve. What's even more remarkable is that LePage is a Tea Party-backed conservative making significant strides in supposedly hostile New England.

A remarkable outpouring of letters to the editor have appeared across the state recently, from Mainers and outsiders alike. They’ve been part of a outcry of disgust, frustration and anger at Gov. Paul LePage’s latest offensive behavior. In a sense, those letters – and the chatter you hear about the governor almost everywhere you go – signal a turning point for LePage. He still has the support of a core of conservative activists. But he’s lost the public as a whole.
