HEXAGON provided vital intelligence and mapping photos from space that allowed US planners to counter Cold War threats. The Corona program was a series of American strategic reconnaissance satellites produced and operated by the Central Intelligence Agency Directorate of Science & Technology with substantial assistance from the U.S. Air Force. The Corona satellites were used for photographic surveillance of the Soviet Union (USSR), the People's Republic of China, and other areas beginning in June 1959 and ending in May 1972...
The Corona satellites used 31,500 feet (9,600 meters) of special 70 millimeter film with 24 inch (60 centimeter) focal length cameras. Initially orbiting at altitudes from 165 to 460 kilometers above the surface of the Earth, the cameras could resolve images on the ground down to 7.5 meters in diameter. The two KH-4 systems improved this resolution to 2.75 meters and 1.8 meters respectively, because they operated at lower orbital altitudes...
The first dozen or more Corona satellites and their launches were cloaked with disinformation as being part of a space technology development program called the Discoverer program. The first test launches for the Corona/Discoverer were carried out early in 1959. The capsule of Discoverer 2 might have been recovered by the Soviets, after landing on Spitsbergen Island. The first Corona launch containing a camera was carried out in June 1959 with the cover name Discoverer 4. This was a 750 kilogram satellite launched by a Thor-Agena rocket.
The plan for the Corona program was for its satellites to return canisters of exposed film to the Earth in re-entry capsules, called by the slang term "film buckets", which were to be recovered in mid-air by specially-equipped U.S. Air Force planes during their parachute descent. (The buckets were designed to float on the water for a short period of time for possible recovery by U.S. Navy ships, and then to sink if the recovery failed, via a water-dissolvable plug made of salt at the base of the capsule. This was for secrecy purposes.)
The return capsule of the Discoverer 13 mission, which launched August 10, 1960, was successfully recovered the next day.[6] This was the first time that any object had been recovered successfully from orbit. After the mission of Discoverer 14, launch on August 18, 1960, its film bucket was successfully retrieved two days later by a C-119 Flying Boxcar transport plane. This was the first successful return of photographic film from orbit. In comparison, Sputnik 5 was launched into orbit on August 19, 1960, one day after the launch of Discoverer 14. Sputnik 5 was a biosatellite that took into orbit the two Soviet space dogs, Belka and Strelka, and then safely returned them to the Earth ...
The last launch under the Discoverer cover name was Discoverer 38 on 26 February 1962. Its bucket was successfully recovered in midair during the 65th orbit (the 13th recovery of a bucket; the ninth one in midair). Following this last use of the Discoverer name, the remaining launches of Corona satellites were entirely top secret. The last Corona launch was on 1972-05-25. The project was abandoned after a Soviet Navy submarine was detected waiting beneath a Corona mid-air retrieval zone in the Pacific Ocean...

The National Reconnaissance Office (NRO), located in Chantilly, Virginia, is one of the 16 U.S. intelligence agencies. It designs, builds, and operates the spy satellites of the United States government, and coordinates the analysis of aerial surveillance and satellite imagery from several intelligence and military agencies.
The Director of the NRO reports to both the Director of National Intelligence and the Secretary of Defense. He also serves as Assistant to the Secretary of the Air Force (Intelligence Space Technology).
The National Reconnaissance Office (NRO) develops and operates space reconnaissance systems and conducts intelligence-related activities for U.S. national security.

Gillian Leigh Anderson (born August 9, 1968) is an American actress. After beginning her career in theatre, Anderson achieved international recognition for her role as Special Agent Dana Scully on the American television series The X-Files. Her film work includes The House of Mirth (2000), The Mighty Celt (2005), The Last King of Scotland (2006), and two X-Files films, The X-Files (1998) and The X-Files: I Want to Believe (2008).
Anderson is of English and Irish descent, and was born in Chicago, Illinois, the daughter of Rosemary Anderson (née Lane), a computer analyst, and Edward Anderson, who owned a film post-production company. Soon after her birth, her family moved to Puerto Rico for 15 months; she then lived for five years in Roseberry Gardens, London N4, and finally for 15 months in Albany Road, London N4, so that her father could attend the London Film School. When Anderson was 11 years old, her family moved again, this time to Grand Rapids, Michigan. She attended Fountain Elementary and then City High-Middle School, a program for gifted students with a strong emphasis on the humanities; she graduated in 1986.

The Corona satellites were used for photographic surveillance of the Soviet Union (USSR), the People's Republic of China, and other areas beginning in June 1959 and ending in May 1972... The Corona satellites used 31,500 feet (9,600 meters) of special 70 millimeter film with 24 inch (60 centimeter) focal length cameras. Initially orbiting at altitudes from 165 to 460 kilometers above the surface of the Earth, the cameras could resolve images on the ground down to 7.5 meters in diameter. The two KH-4 systems improved this resolution to 2.75 meters and 1.8 meters respectively, because they operated at lower orbital altitudes... The first dozen or more Corona satellites and their launches were cloaked with disinformation as being part of a space technology development program called the Discoverer program. The first test launches for the Corona/Discoverer were carried out early in 1959. The capsule of Discoverer 2 might have been recovered by the Soviets, after landing on Spitsbergen Island. The first Corona launch containing a camera was carried out in June 1959 with the cover name Discoverer 4. This was a 750 kilogram satellite launched by a Thor-Agena rocket. The plan for the Corona program was for its satellites to return canisters of exposed film to the Earth in re-entry capsules, called by the slang term "film buckets", which were to be recovered in mid-air by specially-equipped U.S. Air Force planes during their parachute descent. (The buckets were designed to float on the water for a short period of time for possible recovery by U.S. Navy ships, and then to sink if the recovery failed, via a water-dissolvable plug made of salt at the base of the capsule. This was for secrecy purposes.) The return capsule of the Discoverer 13 mission, which launched August 10, 1960, was successfully recovered the next day.[6] This was the first time that any object had been recovered successfully from orbit. After the mission of Discoverer 14, launch on August 18, 1960, its film bucket was successfully retrieved two days later by a C-119 Flying Boxcar transport plane. This was the first successful return of photographic film from orbit. In comparison, Sputnik 5 was launched into orbit on August 19, 1960, one day after the launch of Discoverer 14. Sputnik 5 was a biosatellite that took into orbit the two Soviet space dogs, Belka and Strelka, and then safely returned them to the Earth ... The last launch under the Discoverer cover name was Discoverer 38 on 26 February 1962. Its bucket was successfully recovered in midair during the 65th orbit (the 13th recovery of a bucket; the ninth one in midair). Following this last use of the Discoverer name, the remaining launches of Corona satellites were entirely top secret. The last Corona launch was on 1972-05-25. The first dozen or more Corona satellites and their launches were cloaked with disinformation as being part of a space technology development program called the Discoverer program. The first test launches for the Corona/Discoverer were carried out early in 1959. The capsule of Discoverer 2 might have been recovered by the Soviets, after landing on Spitsbergen Island. The first Corona launch containing a camera was carried out in June 1959 with the cover name Discoverer 4. This was a 750 kilogram satellite launched by a Thor-Agena rocket.
The plan for the Corona program was for its satellites to return canisters of exposed film to the Earth in re-entry capsules, called by the slang term "film buckets", which were to be recovered in mid-air by specially-equipped U.S. Air Force planes during their parachute descent. (The buckets were designed to float on the water for a short period of time for possible recovery by U.S. Navy ships, and then to sink if the recovery failed, via a water-dissolvable plug made of salt at the base of the capsule. This was for secrecy purposes.)
The return capsule of the Discoverer 13 mission, which launched August 10, 1960, was successfully recovered the next day.[6] This was the first time that any object had been recovered successfully from orbit. After the mission of Discoverer 14, launch on August 18, 1960, its film bucket was successfully retrieved two days later by a C-119 Flying Boxcar transport plane. U.S. Air Force to provide assured access to space for Department of Defense
and other government payloads.

Team Vandenberg successfully launched the United Launch Alliance Atlas V rocket carrying a National Reconnaissance Office payload from Space Launch Complex-3 on Thursday, Oct. 8, at 5:49 a.m. PDT.
Colonel J. Christopher Moss, 30th Space Wing Commander, was the launch decision authority. "This launch was a great achievement for Team Vandenberg, ULA, NRO and our launch partners," said Moss. "Their outstanding professionalism and team work ensured a fantastic launch and I am proud to work with this team of experts in support of national defense."
This mission carried a National Reconnaissance Office satellite in support of national defense.
Additionally, thirteen CubeSats were launched aboard the Atlas V aboard the NRO’s Government Rideshare Advanced Concepts Experiment or GRACE auxiliary payload. Nine of the CubeSats are sponsored by the National Reconnaissance Office, and four are sponsored by National Aeronautics and Space Administration.

A map printed in four colours, linen-backed as issued, external dimensions 910 x 627 mm (folding down to approximately 160 x 125 mm).
The two exposed linen panels are foxed, stained and worn, and both the linen and the map are split in two sections along the folds adjacent to these panels (each split is approximately 230 mm long); in essence, it is a very evocative relic.
'No significant ground reconnaissance had been carried out on the peninsula prior to the landings of April, but British officers had conducted sporadic visual reconnaissance of the peninsula from destroyers and aeroplanes. Their observations were entered on detailed maps divided into squares for artillery use and purporting to show elevations with 100 feet wide contour interval lines. This 1:40,000 squared map, which was used for the landing of 25 April, was an enlarged version of the British War Office one-inch (to the mile) map of 1908, which was in turn based on an old 1:50,000 French map dating from the Crimean War.... Much of the [purple] overprinted map information supplied by aerial observation was either misleading or incorrect' (Gallipoli - A Ridge Too Far, edited by Ashley Ekins [2013]). This map carries the ownership details of Corporal J. Gouldie, 6th Battalion, Royal Irish Rifles. The battalion landed at Anzac Cove on 5 August 1915, and formed part of the force attacking Chunuk Bair on 8 August, initially through the impossible terrain of Chailak Dere, later being ordered forward through Aghyl Dere on the left flank of the Anzac position. At the time of the attack, their strength was 23 officers and 743 other ranks. By 10 August, when they were ordered to withdraw, casualties (dead, wounded and missing) were 18 officers and 354 other ranks 'as far as can be ascertained' (War Diary). Amazingly, the words 'Possible Landing Place' are printed at two points on the Gallipoli peninsula and two on the coast opposite. They include W Beach, with V Beach nearby, at both of which British forces did land, sustaining very heavy casualties. The final location indicated as a possible landing place was on the west coast just south of Gaba (or Kapa) Tepe, where the Anzac troops were originally intended to land, with low, flat country behind. However, heavy Turkish fortifications by mid-April led to a change of plans. The 'complete unreliability' of the map, apparent in late April, would have rendered it useless by early August. Although it shows the coastline accurately, the valleys and ridges in which the savage fighting took place are largely conjectural. It gives no indication of the precipitous nature of the terrain through which the 6th Irish Rifles tried to find their way on 8 August. Both Gouldie and his map survived the campaign.

Despite much opposition from the Government and the Ministry of National Security, the Belize Territorial Volunteers in conjunction with the Northern Territorial Volunteers are moving full steam ahead with their trip to Sarstoon Island scheduled for this Sunday August 16th. The undertaking of the venture is being disapproved by the Ministries of National Security and Foreign Affairs, which have cautioned against the expedition out of fear of provoking Guatemala’s military. So far we understand that the Office of the Prime Minister has informed the Guatemalans about the trip but up to this afternoon they had not responded. It is a very touchy issue indeed that has seen the involvement of Senator Lisa Shoman who will accompany group to the Island. Shoman, via a letter informed Belize’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and the Ambassador of Guatemala to Belize about her decision. She stated in the letter that she is accompanying the team in the capacity as a Senator and member of the National Assembly of Belize, as well as the Representative of the Leader of the Opposition on the Ministry team dealing with the unfounded Guatemalan claim to Belize, and as a Belizean. While there was no reaction from the office of the Ambassador of Guatemala to Belize, there was one from Government and they are not at all pleased with Shoman’s decision. I nut shell they think her move is politically motivated. But we will get to that in a few.
The trip to Sarstoon is filled with uncertainty since no security personnel will be accompanying the group. Without a doubt there are mix emotions when it comes to this issue which has been dominating the media for the past days. There are those who applaud the group’s initiative while some say they are making the wrong move. So what do Orange Walkenos think about the controversial trip to the Sarstoon Island? We hit the streets today and found out that the people’s reaction is a mixed bag of emotions….

In practice, the Army Air Forces became virtually independent of the Army during World War II, but its leaders wanted formal independence. Over the continuing objections of the Navy, the United States Department of the Air Force was created by the National Security Act of 1947. That act became effective September 18, 1947 when the first secretary of the Air Force, Stuart Symington, took office. In 1948, the service chiefs agreed on usage of air assets under the "Key West Agreement".
On 16 September 1947, the Army Air Forces became the United States Air Force as a separate and equal element of the United States armed forces. The fledging Air Force quickly established its own identity. Army Air Fields were renamed Air Force Bases and personnel were soon being issued new uniforms with new rank insignia. Once the new Air Force was free of army domination, its first job was to discard the old and inadequate ground army organizational structure. This was the "Base Plan" where the combat group commander reported to the base commander, who was often regular army, with no flying experience.
General Carl A. Spaatz established a new policy, "No tactical commander should be subordinate to the station commander." This resulted in a search for a better arrangement. The commander of the 15th Air Force, Major General Charles Born, proposed the Provisional Wing Plan, which basically reversed the situation and put the wing commander over the base commander. The USAF basic organizational unit became the Base-Wing.
Under this plan, the base support functions -- supply, base operations, transportation, security, and medical were assigned to squadrons, usually commanded by a Major or Lt. Colonel. All of these squadrons were assigned to a Combat Support Group, commanded by a Base Commander, usually a Colonel. Combat fighter or bomber squadrons were assigned to the Combat Group, a retention of the USAAF Group. All of these groups, both combat and combat support, were in turn assigned to the Wing, commanded by a Wing Commander. This way the Wing Commander commanded both the combat operational elements on the base as well as the non-operational The Wing Commander was an experienced air combat leader...
The USAAF Wing then was redesignated as an Air Division, which was commanded Brigadier General or higher, who commanded two or more wings usually, but not always, on a single base.
