The Roads of LA series takes me to Topanga Canyon, a really nice (southbound, anyway) road through Topanga State Park. Topic of the day is the road itself, and the people who lived here before the developers came. The Native Americans of the Tongva tribe used to call these lands home until rich / ignorant investors bullied them out. Luckily, much of Topanga State Park is now protected. Hopefully forever.
Topanga Canyon has beautiful scenery pretty much all year round due to its proximity to the coast. It also typically offers great road conditions (except for a northbound stretch through a little town that seems to be under construction constantly).
It would be a really fun road, medium speed twisty kinda thing, but its major shortcoming is the traffic. It's the only route to the coast from the San Fernando Valley for 6 miles in either direction (without taking some seriously serious back roads) so it gets clogged up with Sunday drivers and sometimes even trucks.
It still makes for a truly, very nice cruise if you're looking for a relaxing mosey down to the beach. Gets my thumbs up!

Charles Manson
Charles Milles Manson (born Charles Milles Maddox, November 12, 1934) is an American criminal who led what became known as the Manson Family, a quasi-commune that arose in the California desert in the late 1960s. Manson and his followers committed a series of nine murders at four locations over a period of five weeks in the summer of 1969. In 1971 he was found guilty of conspiracy to commit the murders of seven people: actress Sharon Tate and four other people at Tate's home; and the next day, a married couple, Leno and Rosemary LaBianca; all carried out by members of the group at his instruction. He was convicted of the murders through the joint-responsibility rule, which makes each member of a conspiracy guilty of crimes committed by fellow conspirators in furtherance of the conspiracy's objective. His followers also murdered several other people at other times and locations, and Manson was also convicted for two of these other murders (of Gary Hinman and Donald "Shorty" Shea).

Manson was released from McNeil Island in 1967 and built up a fast relationship with Beach Boys drummer Dennis Wilson who let Manson live in his LA home next to Elvis and Jimmy Hendrix. The drifter criminal Charlie Manson suddenly found himself in Hollywood among all celebrities. And man they were mesmerised by Charlie. Not mistaken Charlie was a great musician wrote songs like Look at you game girl, My world, Invisible tears, Eyes of a dreamer or the song called Cease to exists (Never learn not to love you) which was released on the Beach Boys 20/20 album under Dennis Wilson's name. Charlie never got a Cent out of it.
So think this over once more please!
The man spent already almost 20 years in prisons of his then 32 years and he was released in 1967 and spent only 2 years outside and was involved such stars like Neil Young, Dennis Wilson and knew all the big names then. Is it normal? I dont think so. Manson was good. And he could sing like not many others that is why he ended up in Hollywood so quickly.
And the guy Manson supposedly a crazed cult leader but how the hell got he all his knowledge? He knows just about everything that goes on in the world if you check his interviews you will quickly arrive to the decision that the guy yes puts on an act but behind that act there is a very intelligent man. He speaks about Abraxas, Idi Amin, Mamma and Africa and all things are quite right what he says but you need to get through on your own prejudice and preconception. Thats when you will realise something else, that you missed before and will might understand more out of Manson and his story.

Topanga Cabin - Tiny woodland getaway Who doesn’t dream of building their own tiny woodland getaway? This dreamy cabin in Topanga Canyon, California, was designed and built by designer Mason St. Peter. The whole venture was sparked by an invitation to his friends’ cabin on the property and the prompting of the property owner to build a day use studio out of leftover and available materials. By first clearing the site and taking an inventory of the materials that could be used, the design and construction began. The compact wooden structure rests on timbers at grade at the entrance. Surrounding on three sides, the diagonally clad in timber deck floats slightly over the gently sloped and grassy forested terrain. Who doesn’t dream of building their own tiny woodland getaway? This dreamy cabin in Topanga Canyon, California, was designed and built by designer Mason St. Peter. The whole venture was sparked by an invitation to his friends’ cabin on the property and the prompting of the property owner to build a day use studio out of leftover and available materials.
By first clearing the site and taking an inventory of the materials that could be used, the design and construction began. The compact wooden structure rests on timbers at grade at the entrance. Surrounding on three sides, the diagonally clad in timber deck floats slightly over the gently sloped and grassy forested terrain.
Clad in reclaimed and vertically placed boards, the nearly square volume opens completely on two sides. On the public side, two large wooden panels swing open and reveal the interior and the view beyond through expansive sliding glass doors and a small window. A six-over-two panel window reveals the sleeping loft above.
Inside opposing walls are partially lined with wood shelves for open storage. One even acts as the stair to access the shallow loft. Next to that a built-in window seat is ample enough for a single guest who wants enviable views.
Double sliding glass doors and another upper window open the space further to the outside on the main wall adjacent to the deck. Bridging the width of the cabin is a thick counter that rests on the shelving and provides generous food prep and indoor/outdoor dining area.

THIS IS IT -- the ride over Topanga Canyon, Santa Monica Mountains, Los Angeles that you've been waiting for. I'm on a rented Harley-Davidson Sportster 1200. I'm not a speed demon, I'm new on the bike, so I used the ride to practice my curve technique. But it was a beautiful day and a great ride. Chattery narration throughout. (No windscreen on the microphone, so the narration gets a little hard to hear in windy moments.)

Last Bastion: A Tale of the Topanga Rodeo Grounds
One of six short documentaries on the history, sub-communities, and characters of Topanga Canyon by Anastasia Fite. The Topanga Rodeo grounds, The Snakepit, and Topanga Beach, were alternative communities at the mouth of Topanga Canyon that provided an alternative lifestyle for surfers, artists, and bohemians of all kinds until 2007, due to an archaic rental agreement with LAAC. When State Parks bought the land in the 2000's they evicted all the tenants and tore down their homes, many of whom had been there for 40+ years and raised several generations of families there. This film profiles some of those residents and their time at The Rodeo Grounds as they wander through their abandoned and derelict houses nostalgically telling stories.

The Topanga Rodeo grounds, The Snakepit, and Topanga Beach, were alternative communities at the mouth of Topanga Canyon that provided an alternative lifestyle for surfers, artists, and bohemians of all kinds until 2007, due to an archaic rental agreement with LAAC. When State Parks bought the land in the 2000's they evicted all the tenants and tore down their homes, many of whom had been there for 40+ years and raised several generations of families there. This film profiles some of those residents and their time at The Rodeo Grounds as they wander through their abandoned and derelict houses nostalgically telling stories.
