A Related Effort

I'm one of the co-founders of a wiki-based site for crowd-sourcing fact checks, and I wonder if the site would be of interest to some the editors here at Wikipedia. The site, kasense.com, allows anyone to create fact checks of public misinformation, as well as edit and improve existing fact checks already on the site. As with Wikipedia, the site policy requires reliable references, so users can verify the fact checks for themselves, and users can collaborate to improve the fact checks over time. The site is still currently in beta.

If you're interested in contributing content to the site, feel free to follow the link (kasense.com) and add a fact check or edit one of the in-progress fact checks. Also, any feedback is welcome, or we can be reached at contactATkasense.com if you'd rather offer feedback over email (replace AT with @).

Wikipetitions Proposal

I would love to see suggestions, feedback, and questions related to my proposed Wikimedia project, called Wikipetitions. I would also like for anybody who is interested in the project to edit your name into the People Interested.

This would be a great start for better ways to interact with and communicate with our respective countries lawmakers(when/where permitted), and this kind of collaboration would help clarify the issue at hand!

English Wikipedia as a source

Project page appropriate here?

Wikimedia Nederland has recently started an international project, Netherlands and the world, that will take place in many languages and across several Wikimedia projects (presumably Wikipedias, Commons, Wikidata, Wikisource and perhaps other projects too). We thought the most appropriate location for a central project page would be here, on Meta (I know Outreach is an option too, but it is likely that the GLAM pages there will be moved to Meta at some point as well). Does anyone object to having this central project page here on Meta, preferably as a subpage of Wikimedia Nederland? There's a draft in my user space at this moment. Add 'autopatrol' user right to some local usergroups

It looks a bit odd that some local elected or appointed usergroups such as translation administrators, central notice administrators, mass message senders and WMF SuSa staff have to get autopatrol right separately. I think users in those groups can be trusted not to make incorrect edits nor his pages requires to be patrolled, nor his changes being highlighted in the recent changes. Would you object having the above user groups the autopatrol right attached to their group? If not all, which ones? Thank you. —MarcoAurelio 12:32, 31 July 2016 (UTC)

I support as much groups as possible having this right; that will prevent many useless log actions. I actually think the patrolling can be switched off altogether as its only effect is whether or not an exclamation mark is shown in the RC next to new pages. --MF-W 13:25, 1 August 2016 (UTC)

Thank you for your comments. I have filled a ticket and uploaded a patch to add the 'autopatrol' right to: centralnotice administrators, global renamers, massmessage senders, WMF Office IT and WMF Support and Safety; considering that all people in those groups are trusted with more powerful tools and the general impression that there might be no need to patrol their edits nor its page creations. I've not scheduled the patch for any SWAT window yet, just in case there are further comments. —MarcoAurelio 19:36, 4 August 2016 (UTC)

Importing Data Into a Wiki vs Linking to a Database

I am preparing a public wiki that is hosted privately. The data sits in a local MySQL database. I am debating whether to upload the entire database to the wiki or to leave the data on the database and link to it through the wiki. All updates to the data will then take place on the database. Which is the preferred method for data integrity reasons? And are there other more efficient methods for populating a wiki that are followed by the wiki community?--Soubanikhaled (talk) 14:47, 4 August 2016 (UTC)

Translations by IPs

How many translations made by unregistered contributors are actually valid translations? I ask because I'm tired to delete and revert vandal or nonsense translations from IP addresses, and wonder if we could remove from unregistered contributors the permission to translate. Also, maybe we could also enable the TranslationSandbox here too. Regards, —MarcoAurelio 13:28, 5 August 2016 (UTC)

I guess that valid translations of IP translations are about 2-3%. A lot of vandalism and also a lot of test edits, because probably many don't know how to use the tool and just add the original English text. I would agree with disabling the feature from IP's on Meta. --Stryn (talk) 15:04, 5 August 2016 (UTC)

Certainly a very little percentage of the translations made by non registered users are really useful, I've deleted tons of test/not translated/vandalism translation units from IPs. I will not oppose your proposal.--Syum90 (talk) 15:32, 5 August 2016 (UTC)

I currently have no reason to believe that translations by unregistered users are less useful than the average for unregistered users (which we know from research to be way better than it looks). Also, usually the worst translations to Italian that I see sticking around are made by registered users. :) --Nemo 09:17, 6 August 2016 (UTC)

Nemo, is there a way to revocke one user from translating without blocking their accounts. TranslateSandbox] maybe? I have the same problem with spanish translations... —MarcoAurelio 11:08, 6 August 2016 (UTC)

I don't think *completely* disabling translating by IPs is a good idea as there are times where we receive contributions (even significant ones like whole page translations) and losing those contributions would be a huge loss for us, IMO. Instead, we should be using our antivandalism tools to reduce and prevent this. Our existing tools are apparently not sufficient so we should work to improve them before resorting to extreme measures like completely disable editing translations by IPs. I filed phab:T142292 and phab:T142293. If you also have ideas, please file them on Phabricator or add suggestions here. --Glaisher (talk) 09:38, 6 August 2016 (UTC)

If you can find someone that is willing to develop those tools that'd be awesome Glaisher. That we can't protect translation pages, or do selective removal of translation rights to those users who just add crappy translations would be very welcome. Minerva on desktop

Hello, I'm not sure that this is the right place to ask this question but I hope you will understand me ;)

I readed somewhere in MediWiki.org that it was possible to use the mobile designed skin "Minerva" in the desktop version. But the problem is that I can't find it in the skins list in my preferences (vector, monobook, etc.). What should I do?

Enabling data access in user language on meta

Hello folks,

We're currently working on enabling Wikidata data access in user language for metawiki. That means that all functionality that we provide, in order to make use of the data on Wikidata, will be using the users language for localization instead of English, so that each user can see the content in their preferred language.

In detail that means that the {{#property:…|from=Q1234}} parser function will output labels, dates, … formatted in the users language. The same applies to the Lua functions we provide for advanced use cases. A detailed reference of the Lua functionality we provide can be found at https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:Wikibase_Client/Lua.

The deployment for this new feature has been made today, August 17, 13:00–14:00 UTC. If you encounter any issue, please let us know.

What do you mean by user language? I assume you mean page content language, for the pages where it's set (such as translation pages)? --Nemo 19:01, 17 August 2016 (UTC)
