Cartoon Network

Cartoon Network is an American basic cable and satellite television channel that is owned by the Turner Broadcasting System division of Time Warner. The channel airs primarily animated programming, ranging from action to animated comedy. It was founded by Betty Cohen and launched on October 1, 1992.

It is primarily aimed at children and teenagers between the ages of 7–16, and also targets older teens and adults with mature content during its late night daypart Adult Swim, which is treated as a separate entity for promotional purposes and as a separate channel by Nielsen for ratings purposes. A Spanish language audio track for select programs is accessible via SAP; some cable and satellite companies offer the Spanish feed as a separate channel.

As of February 2015, Cartoon Network is available to approximately 96.4 million pay television households (82.8% of households with television) in the United States.

History

Development

On August 4, 1986, Ted Turner's Turner Broadcasting System acquired Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer/United Artists from Kirk Kerkorian; due to concerns over the debt load of his companies, on October 17, 1986, Turner was forced to sell MGM back to Kerkorian after approximately only 74 days of ownership. However, Turner kept much of MGM's film and television library made prior to May 1986 (as well as some of the United Artists library) and formed Turner Entertainment.

Cartoon Network (Netherlands)

Cartoon Network is a Dutch TV channel which primarily airs animated programming in the Netherlands and Belgium. This version is available in the Dutch and English languages. Some providers offer the Dutch language only.

History

On 17 September 1993 Cartoon Network launched in the Netherlands as the Pan-European feed in English without subtitles. The Dutch feed launched four years later on 12 July 1997. It broadcast 18 hours a day: from 06AM until midnight. Most shows were aired in English with Dutch subtitles, but some aired in Dutch. On 1 February 2000 the website launched. A magazine launched on 13 April 2000 with 11 issues and one special. The Dutch feed closed down on 1 August 2001 and was replaced with the Pan-European feed with a Dutch audio track. (Yet some shows still aired in English with subtitles) It started airing 16 hours a day (06AM until 10PM) and advertisements were in English. The airtime shortened again on 1 April 2003. (06AM until 09PM) A new logo appeared on 21 April 2006. On 25 April 2008 UPC Nederland added an English audiotrack. Ziggo did the same in 2010. On 17 November 2010, the Dutch feed relaunched and started broadcasting 24 hours a day and with a new logo. All programs and ads air in Dutch. Some TV providers, like Belgacom and CanalDigitaal, kept broadcasting the Pan-European feed until 31 January 2011. This was the last day this feed aired in Dutch. Every provider receives the Dutch feed since February 2011.

Cartoon Network Universe: FusionFall

Cartoon Network Universe: FusionFall was a massively multiplayer online game developed by Cartoon Network and Grigon Entertainment. FusionFall used the Unity engine as its client technology basis.

For the first year, the full game required a subscription; free accounts could only access to a portion of the content.

On August 29, 2013, the game's servers were shut down.

Gameplay

In FusionFall, the player takes control of a customized avatar based on characters from current and past shows. Their character is viewed from a third-person perspective with an overlaid HUD. The game had large playable environments, with travel facilitated by various warp points as well as certain temporary vehicles to get to areas faster. Gameplay primarily focused on the alliance between the heroes and villains of the Cartoon Network universe, featuring characters from Cartoon Network shows both past and present. Many characters are available as guides after players complete level four of the game. Playing past level five originally required a monthly paid subscription in the form of redeemable cards that could be purchased at participating retailers. The cards were rendered obsolete after April 16, 2010, when the entirety of the game became free to play; players with unredeemed time cards were offered a refund for their unused cards.

Cartoon Network (Central & Eastern Europe)

Cartoon Network CEE (also known as Cartoon Network Hungary and Cartoon Network Romania) is a children's channel broadcasting to people in Czech Republic, in Hungary, in Moldova, in Romania and in Slovakia. The channel was launched along with the Romanian and Polish feed. The channel is owned by Turner Broadcasting System Europe. The channel also carried a Toonami programming block. On April 1, 2015, Cartoon Network started broadcasting 24 hours a day in Hungary. Hungary was the last country to get Cartoon Network timeshared with TCM.
