Congress:
Bill to end use of wild animals in circuses unveiled
Congressman Rep.
Jim Moran,
Bob Barker, and
Jorja Fox announce new Bill to end animal suffering. Measures that could see an end to elephants, lions, tigers, monkeys and bears touring with circuses have been unveiled today at a press conference attended by Bob Barker, Jorja Fox,
Animal Defenders International (
ADI), and the
Performing Animal Welfare Society (
PAWS). The
Travelling Exotic Animal Protection Act, introduced by Rep. Jim Moran (D-Va.), will restrict the use of exotic and non-domesticated animals in traveling circuses and exhibitions.
ADI has built up a formidable body of film and photographic evidence that reveals the extent of animal suffering in travelling circuses. Our reports on the use of animals in circuses in the UK in
1998,
2001 and
2003 and 2004 have demonstrated that travelling animal circuses, by their very nature, cause distress and suffering. We have also published reports on the suffering of circus animals in
Portugal and
Ireland. We have prosecuted circus workers and owners, we have rescued and relocated circus animals, our
Field Officers have worked undercover in over 20 animal circuses all over the world.
Below you will find links to the most comprehensive and candid data available on the use of animal in circuses.
With the best will in the world, in circumstances of constant travelling and temporary accommodation, welfare will always be compromised. That is with the best will in the world -- our reports and videos reveal a world of confinement and deprivation punctuated by violence.

Animals in the circus have not been asked to be there. They are stolen from the wild, babies ripped from their mothers and beaten into submission to perform.
Elephants live a majority of their lives in chains.
Tigers are crammed in into tiny cages for months on end. This atrocity must end now and we are putting a stop to it. But we can't succeed without you!
Contact Congress this week!
Ask your
Representative in Congress to support and co-sponsor the
Traveling Exotic Animal Protection Act (
H.R. 3359), a landmark federal bill that aims to protect elephants, tigers, bears and other wild animals from being forced to perform in traveling circuses.
