The Metropolitan Police Department released body camera footage from the scene of a police-involved shooting last week that left a 63-year-old man dead. Police say they recovered Sherman Evans' BB gun at the scene.
Police responded to a report about a man with a gun in 100 block of Varnum Street NE around 10:22 p.m. on July 27, MPD said in a release the next day. The 16-minute-long footage is a combination of film from two officers.
The video shows officers arriving at the scene near Catholic University to find Evans with a weapon in his hand. He's standing on a small grassy hill outside of an apartment building. From the street and sidewalk, police begin telling Evans to drop his gun. They begin speaking aggressively but over the course of several minutes, officers give the instructions in a more calm manner. "Come on sir, just put it down ... we'll talk," one officer says.
As one of the officers captures the incident on his body-worn camera, he moves behind a car in an apparent attempt to shield himself. The camera is aimed away from Evans during this time, and a few seconds later, the sound of several gun shots are heard. Afterward, officers run toward Evans and put him in handcuffs. An unconscious Evans is then turned over as police try to revive him.
One of the officers is heard telling someone that they shot Evans because he raised his gun at them. He was taken to a hospital where he died, according to MPD.
City Administrator Rashad Young told NBC 4 that investigators linked Evans to the initial call about a person with a gun. "Our dispatchers called back that number. It is a number that appears to belong to the decedent and appears to have his name on his voicemail," Young said. He added that they aren't drawing any conclusions at this point.
The release comes as bystander videos of fatal police-involved shootings this week in Louisiana and Minnesota have drawn outrage, prompting protests and further investigation by the Department of Justice.
Last December, the D.C. Council passed a bill allowing District residents to view most footage recorded by MPD officers in public places.
The same day, MPD released its first piece of footage from the program, involving the death of 27-year-old Alonzo Smith at the hands of special police officers in Southeast. That video would have been exempt from FOIA because the U.S. attorney’s office is investigating the case, but the mayor has the power to release footage that is deemed of significant public interest under the new law. Mayor Muriel Bowser announced General Counsel Betsy Cavendish would review all footage from law enforcement-involved shootings, deaths in custody, and incidents of serious bodily injury involving officers and determine if it should be released. "We will weight the benefits of disclosure against the possible harm, such as health and privacy concerns, protecting confidential police sources and witnesses," Bowser said at the time.
This is the second video of an officer-involved shooting released publicly by the city. Evans' shooting is being investigated by MPD’s Internal Affairs Bureau as well as the U.S. Attorney’s Office, according to police.

Muriel Evans
Muriel Evans (July 20, 1910 – October 26, 2000) was an American film actress. She is best known for her many appearances in popular westerns of the 1930s for which she won a Golden Boot Award.
Early life and career
Muriel Adele Evanson was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota to Norwegian immigrant parents. Her father died when she was only two months old, forcing her mother to move to California to find work, where Evans' mother took a job as a maid at First National Studios. She spent her afternoons on film sets and was soon noticed by a studio executive. The executive introduced her to the director Robert Z. Leonard, who gave her a small role opposite Corinne Griffith in the 1926 film, Mademoiselle Modiste. She continued attending classes at Hollywood High School and landing bit parts in stock theater productions and silent films.
In 1929, Evans co-starred in the silent, comedic short films, Good Night Nurse and Joyland, starring Lupino Lane. Shortly after completing Joyland, Evans put her acting career on hold to finish school. In July 1929, Evans announced her engagement to Michael J. P. Cudahy, the grandson of Michael Cudahy, one of the founders of the Cudahy Packing Company. They were married on July 7, 1929 in Riverside, California. Evans and Cudahy traveled the world and settled in Paris. In 1930, they returned to the United States and Evans filed for divorce. Their divorce was finalized in October 1930. Evans, who gave up her career upon her marriage, returned to Hollywood, signed a contract at MGM and began making films again.

Russell Hayden
Russell "Lucky" Hayden (June 12, 1912, in Chico, California – June 9, 1981, in Palm Springs, California) was an American film and television actor.
He was born as Hayden Michael "Pate" Lucid, son of Francis J. Lucid and the former Minnie Harvey. He later took the name Russell Hayden to honor a friend, cameraman Russell Harlan.
Life and career
Hayden worked behind the scenes in films in jobs such as sound recorder, film cutter, and assistant cameraman before he became an actor in the mid-1930s. At the beginning of his acting career, he mainly starred in Westerns and was voted one of the Top Ten cowboy stars.
He played Lucky Jenkins, one of a trio of heroes in the Hopalong Cassidy westerns starring William Boyd, then co-starred with Charles Starrett in other westerns. In 1947, he played both the main hero and villain in the film Trail of the Mounties.
In 1950, Hayden appeared as "Marshal #1" in several episodes of the live-broadcast and short-lived ABC series The Marshal of Gunsight Pass.

Lee J. Cobb
Lee J. Cobb (December 8, 1911 – February 11, 1976) was an American actor. He is best known for his performances in 12 Angry Men (1957), On the Waterfront (1954), and one of his last films, The Exorcist (1973). He also played the role of Willy Loman in the original Broadway production of Arthur Miller's 1949 play Death of a Salesman under the direction of Elia Kazan. On television, Cobb costarred in the first four seasons of the western series The Virginian. He typically played arrogant, intimidating, and abrasive characters, but often had roles as respectable figures such as judges and police officers.
Background
Cobb was born Leo Jacoby in New York City, to a Jewish family of Russian and Romanian extraction. He grew up in the Bronx, New York, on Wilkins Avenue, near Crotona Park. His parents were Benjamin (Benzion) Jacob, a compositor for a foreign-language newspaper, and Kate (Neilecht). Cobb studied at New York University before making his film debut in The Vanishing Shadow (1934). He joined the Manhattan-based Group Theatre in 1935.

Plot: A New York magnate and his wife are upset that their daughter Muriel intends to enter a beauty pageant in Ocean Beach; "What will the Vanderbilts think?," they lament. The wife hires "Fearless," a man who says he'll do anything for $1000, to find a way to keep Muriel from entering the contest. "Fearless" turns out to be a rather clumsy and unprepossessing man whom Muriel meets on the train to Ocean Beach. Not knowing who she is, he tells her all about the job he's on. Later, when the contest is about to start, he sees her again and asks her help in keeping the elusive Ms. Evans out of the contest. Muriel is happy to help. Will "Fearless" succeed? And what about the $1,000?

The Metropolitan Police Department released body camera footage from the scene of a police-involved shooting last week that left a 63-year-old man dead. Police say they recovered Sherman Evans' BB gun at the scene. The video shows officers arriving at the scene near Catholic University to find Evans with a weapon in his hand. He's standing on a small grassy hill outside of an apartment building. From the street and sidewalk, police begin telling Evans to drop his gun. They begin speaking aggressively but over the course of several minutes, officers give the instructions in a more calm manner. "Come on sir, just put it down ... we'll talk," one officer says.
As one of the officers captures the incident on his body-worn camera, he moves behind a car in an apparent attempt to shield himself. The camera is aimed away from Evans during this time, and a few seconds later, the sound of several gun shots are heard. Afterward, officers run toward Evans and put him in handcuffs. An unconscious Evans is then turned over as police try to revive him.
One of the officers is heard telling someone that they shot Evans because he raised his gun at them. He was taken to a hospital where he died, according to MPD.
City Administrator Rashad Young told NBC 4 that investigators linked Evans to the initial call about a person with a gun. "Our dispatchers called back that number. It is a number that appears to belong to the decedent and appears to have his name on his voicemail," Young said. He added that they aren't drawing any conclusions at this point.
The release comes as bystander videos of fatal police-involved shootings this week in Louisiana and Minnesota have drawn outrage, prompting protests and further investigation by the Department of Justice.
Last December, the D.C. Council passed a bill allowing District residents to view most footage recorded by MPD officers in public places.
The same day, MPD released its first piece of footage from the program, involving the death of 27-year-old Alonzo Smith at the hands of special police officers in Southeast. That video would have been exempt from FOIA because the U.S. attorney’s office is investigating the case, but the mayor has the power to release footage that is deemed of significant public interest under the new law. Mayor Muriel Bowser announced General Counsel Betsy Cavendish would review all footage from law enforcement-involved shootings, deaths in custody, and incidents of serious bodily injury involving officers and determine if it should be released. "We will weight the benefits of disclosure against the possible harm, such as health and privacy concerns, protecting confidential police sources and witnesses," Bowser said at the time.
This is the second video of an officer-involved shooting released publicly by the city. Evans' shooting is being investigated by MPD’s Internal Affairs Bureau as well as the U.S. Attorney’s Office, according to police.

The release comes as bystander videos of fatal police-involved shootings this week in Louisiana and Minnesota have drawn outrage, prompting protests and further investigation by the Department of Justice.
Last December, the D.C. Council passed a bill allowing District residents to view most footage recorded by MPD officers in public places.
The same day, MPD released its first piece of footage from the program, involving the death of 27-year-old Alonzo Smith at the hands of special police officers in Southeast. That video would have been exempt from FOIA because the U.S. attorney’s office is investigating the case, but the mayor has the power to release footage that is deemed of significant public interest under the new law. Mayor Muriel Bowser announced General Counsel Betsy Cavendish would review all footage from law enforcement-involved shootings, deaths in custody, and incidents of serious bodily injury involving officers and determine if it should be released. "We will weight the benefits of disclosure against the possible harm, such as health and privacy concerns, protecting confidential police sources and witnesses," Bowser said at the time.
This is the second video of an officer-involved shooting released publicly by the city. Evans' shooting is being investigated by MPD’s Internal Affairs Bureau as well as the U.S. Attorney’s Office, according to police.

Fatal Police shooting of man with BB gun
The Metropolitan Police Department released body camera footage from the scene of a police-involved shooting last week that left a 63-year-old man dead. Police say they recovered Sherman Evans' BB gun at the scene. Police responded to a report about a man with a gun in 100 block of Varnum Street NE around 10:22 p.m. on July 27, MPD said in a release the next day. The 16-minute-long footage is a combination of film from two officers. The video shows officers arriving at the scene near Catholic University to find Evans with a weapon in his hand. He's standing on a small grassy hill outside of an apartment building. From the street and sidewalk, police begin telling Evans to drop his gun. The Metropolitan Police Department released body camera footage from the scene of a police-involved shooting last week that left a 63-year-old man dead. Police say they recovered Sherman Evans' BB gun at the scene.
Police responded to a report about a man with a gun in 100 block of Varnum Street NE around 10:22 p.m. on July 27, MPD said in a release the next day. The 16-minute-long footage is a combination of film from two officers.
The video shows officers arriving at the scene near Catholic University to find Evans with a weapon in his hand. He's standing on a small grassy hill outside of an apartment building. From the street and sidewalk, police begin telling Evans to drop his gun. They begin speaking aggressively but over the course of several minutes, officers give the instructions in a more calm manner. "Come on sir, just put it down ... we'll talk," one officer says.
As one of the officers captures the incident on his body-worn camera, he moves behind a car in an apparent attempt to shield himself. The camera is aimed away from Evans during this time, and a few seconds later, the sound of several gun shots are heard. Afterward, officers run toward Evans and put him in handcuffs. An unconscious Evans is then turned over as police try to revive him.
One of the officers is heard telling someone that they shot Evans because he raised his gun at them. He was taken to a hospital where he died, according to MPD.
City Administrator Rashad Young told NBC 4 that investigators linked Evans to the initial call about a person with a gun. "Our dispatchers called back that number. It is a number that appears to belong to the decedent and appears to have his name on his voicemail," Young said. He added that they aren't drawing any conclusions at this point.
The release comes as bystander videos of fatal police-involved shootings this week in Louisiana and Minnesota have drawn outrage, prompting protests and further investigation by the Department of Justice.
Last December, the D.C. Council passed a bill allowing District residents to view most footage recorded by MPD officers in public places.
The same day, MPD released its first piece of footage from the program, involving the death of 27-year-old Alonzo Smith at the hands of special police officers in Southeast. That video would have been exempt from FOIA because the U.S. attorney’s office is investigating the case, but the mayor has the power to release footage that is deemed of significant public interest under the new law. Mayor Muriel Bowser announced General Counsel Betsy Cavendish would review all footage from law enforcement-involved shootings, deaths in custody, and incidents of serious bodily injury involving officers and determine if it should be released. "We will weight the benefits of disclosure against the possible harm, such as health and privacy concerns, protecting confidential police sources and witnesses," Bowser said at the time.
This is the second video of an officer-involved shooting released publicly by the city. Evans' shooting is being investigated by MPD’s Internal Affairs Bureau as well as the U.S. Attorney’s Office, according to police.

The film opens on a ship where Barry Wilding (Leslie Fenton) and Julie Kenmore (Muriel Evans) meet on their way to England. On reaching there Barry finds out that he has inherited a house that belonged to his forefathers, to see how it looks like he goes there one night but finds out that it has been occupied by an old man and his daughter, the same girl he met on ship. The mystery evokes when he comes to know that suspicious people are after the house and strange things are happening.
