Celine Dion joined fans of René Angélil's as they paid their final respects during a visitation on Thursday at Notre-Dame Basilica in Old Montreal.
The 47-year-old performer hid her face behind a black veil but it was clear she was distraught and had tears in her eyes in a video shared by Global News. Also at the service was her mother Thérèse, 88, and René's brother André as well as her eldest son René-Charles, aged 14.
Angélil died of throat cancer at the age of 73 on January 14. His funeral will be held on Friday at the same basilica.

"Jesus Christ Is Risen Today" from the University of Notre Dame Basilica. It was the recessional hymn of the Mass of Ordination for my friend and former ND roommate, Gregory Haake, along with 3 other fellow ordained, on 4/14/07, the week after Easter (hence the seasonal hymn). Performed by the Notre Dame Liturgical Choir, it is perhaps the most powerful rendition of the hymn I've ever experienced.

Karen Schneider-Kirner, an organist at the Basilica of the Sacred Heart at the University of Notre Dame, plays "Joy to the World" and "Noël Suisse" at the end of the 10 a.m. Mass on Sunday, December 27, 2015. It was the last official performance on the Holtkamp, which will be replaced by a new pipe organ by the Paul Fritts organ workshop in 2016.

The Basilica’s vast size, executed in the Gothic Revival style, the extraordinary craftsmanship and artistic polish of its fittings, its many fine works of religious art, and the interior of its chapel inspired by the Sainte-Chapelle in Paris, are heritage features whose preservation and enhancement demand the greatest possible attention and care.
Archaeological treasures
Visitors interested in the arts of the past will be amazed with the church’s impressive crypt, where they can study its origins. The present-day Basilica, which was inaugurated in 1829, was built on a plan set back slightly from the placement of the original church, which stood on the plot of ground covered today by Notre-Dame Street. As a result, many archaeological treasures of major ethnographic value still exist in the area around the Basilica and underneath its front square.
A team of specialists
Our staff of heritage specialists has the job of caring for these important historic treasures. During periods of major restoration work, however, the Notre-Dame team also relies on the expertise of distinguished outside professionals.
A legacy to preserve and cherish
In order to share the knowledge we have gained and continue to acquire about our heritage, various means of communications have been set up. Examples are our guided tours and the publication Mémoire et histoire (“Memory and History”), a boxed set of monographs (available in May 2008).
History
When it was founded in 1642, the village, then known as Ville-Marie, had its first wooden chapel inside the palisade at Pointe-à-Callière, today the site of Montreal’s major archaeological museum.From chapel to church
Dedicated to Our Lady the Blessed Virgin – “Notre Dame” – the small original chapel was operated at first by the Jesuits. Then came the Sulpician Fathers, who in 1657 undertook construction of a larger church. The Sulpician François Dollier de Casson was its architect, and the present-day Notre-Dame Street served as the original site. Its construction, in Baroque style was completed between 1672 and 1683.
A larger church is planned
By 1800, Dollier’s church had become too small, and the Fabrique decided to build the church we know today. To design the new church, the building council engaged the services of the New York architect James O’Donnell – himself an Irish Protestant by origin. O’Donnell and the Fabrique opted for the Gothic Revival style then in vogue in England and the United States. The main construction work took place between 1824 and 1829.
O’Donnell did not live to see his work completed. He died in Montreal in 1830. Just prior to his death, he had converted to Catholicism, and was buried in the new church’s crypt, where his grave is marked by a plaque.
Montreal’s twin towers
The old church set back from the road was demolished in the summer of 1830, except for its bell tower, which survived until 1843, when Notre-Dame Basilica’s twin towers were completed by the architect John Ostell. The western tower, nicknamed La Persévérance (Perseverance) and finished in 1841, houses the great bell christened “Jean-Baptiste,” weighing 11 tons (11,000 kilograms or 24,000 pounds). The eastern tower, nicknamed La Tempérance (Temperance), was completed in 1843 and houses a carillon of 10 bells.

The Sacred Heart (also known as Most Sacred Heart of Jesus) is one of the most famous religious devotions to Jesus' physical heart as the representation of his divine love for humanity.
This devotion is predominantly used in the Catholic Church and among some high-church Anglicans and Lutherans. The devotion especially emphasizes the unmitigated love, compassion, and long-suffering of the heart of Christ towards humanity. The origin of this devotion in its modern form is derived from a French Roman Catholic nun, Marguerite Marie Alacoque, who said she learned the devotion from Jesus during a mystical experience. Predecessors to the modern devotion arose unmistakably in the Middle Ages in various facets of Catholic mysticism.
In the Roman Catholic tradition, the Sacred Heart has been closely associated with Acts of Reparation to Jesus Christ. In his encyclical Miserentissimus Redemptor, Pope Pius XI stated: "the spirit of expiation or reparation has always had the first and foremost place in the worship given to the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus". The Golden Arrow Prayer directly refers to the Sacred Heart.

Céline Marie Claudette Dion, CC OQ, (French pronunciation: [selin djɔ̃] (
listen); born March 30, 1968), is a Canadian singer. Born to a large family from Charlemagne, Quebec, Dion emerged as a teen star in the French-speaking world after her manager and future husband René Angélil mortgaged his home to finance her first record. In 1990, she released the English-language album Unison, establishing herself as a viable pop artist in North America and other English-speaking areas of the world.
Dion had first gained international recognition in the 1980s by winning both the 1982 Yamaha World Popular Song Festival and the 1988 Eurovision Song Contest. Following a series of French albums in the early 1980s, she signed on to CBS Records Canada in 1986. During the 1990s, with the help of Angélil, she achieved worldwide fame after signing with Epic Records and releasing several English albums along with additional French albums, becoming one of the most successful artists in pop music history. However, in 1999 at the height of her success, Dion announced a hiatus from entertainment in order to start a family and spend time with her husband, who had been diagnosed with cancer. She returned to the top of pop music in 2002 and signed a three-year (later extended to almost five years) contract to perform nightly in a five-star theatrical show at the Colosseum at Caesars Palace, Paradise, Nevada.

Hồ Chí Minh (Vietnamese pronunciation: [hô cǐ miɲ] (Vietnamese pronunciation: [hô̤ tɕǐmɪŋ] ( listen)); 19 May 1890 – 2 September 1969), born Nguyễn Sinh Cung and also known as Nguyễn Tất Thành and Nguyễn Ái Quốc, was a Vietnamese Stalinist revolutionary leader who was prime minister (1945–1955) and president (1945–1969) of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam (North Vietnam). He was a key figure in the foundation of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam in 1945, as well as the People's Army of Vietnam (PAVN) and the Việt Cộng (NLF or VC) during the Vietnam War.
He led the Việt Minh independence movement from 1941 onward, establishing the communist-governed Democratic Republic of Vietnam in 1945 and defeating the French Union in 1954 at Điện Biên Phủ. He officially stepped down from power in 1955 due to health problems, but remained a highly visible figurehead and inspiration for Vietnamese fighting for his cause – a united, independent Vietnam – until his death. After the war, Saigon, the capital of Republic of Vietnam, was renamed Hồ Chí Minh City in his honor.

"Jesus Christ Is Risen Today" from the University of Notre Dame Basilica. It was the recessional hymn of the Mass of Ordination for my friend and former ND roommate, Gregory Haake, along with 3 other fellow ordained, on 4/14/07, the week after Easter (hence the seasonal hymn). Performed by the Notre Dame Liturgical Choir, it is perhaps the most powerful rendition of the hymn I've ever experienced. -

Karen Schneider-Kirner, an organist at the Basilica of the Sacred Heart at the University of Notre Dame, plays "Joy to the World" and "Noël Suisse" at the end of the 10 a.m. Mass on Sunday, December 27, 2015. It was the last official performance on the Holtkamp, which will be replaced by a new pipe organ by the Paul Fritts organ workshop in 2016. -

Celine Dion joined fans of René Angélil's as they paid their final respects during a visitation on Thursday at Notre-Dame Basilica in Old Montreal.
The 47-year-old performer hid her face behind a black veil but it was clear she was distraught and had tears in her eyes in a video shared by Global News. Also at the service was her mother Thérèse, 88, and René's brother André as well as her eldest son René-Charles, aged 14.
Angélil died of throat cancer at the age of 73 on January 14. His funeral will be held on Friday at the same basilica.

The Basilica’s vast size, executed in the Gothic Revival style, the extraordinary craftsmanship and artistic polish of its fittings, its many fine works of religious art, and the interior of its chapel inspired by the Sainte-Chapelle in Paris, are heritage features whose preservation and enhancement demand the greatest possible attention and care.
Archaeological treasures
Visitors interested in the arts of the past will be amazed with the church’s impressive crypt, where they can study its origins. The present-day Basilica, which was inaugurated in 1829, was built on a plan set back slightly from the placement of the original church, which stood on the plot of ground covered today by Notre-Dame Street. As a result, many archaeological treasures of major ethnographic value still exist in the area around the Basilica and underneath its front square.
A team of specialists
Our staff of heritage specialists has the job of caring for these important historic treasures. During periods of major restoration work, however, the Notre-Dame team also relies on the expertise of distinguished outside professionals.
A legacy to preserve and cherish
In order to share the knowledge we have gained and continue to acquire about our heritage, various means of communications have been set up. Examples are our guided tours and the publication Mémoire et histoire (“Memory and History”), a boxed set of monographs (available in May 2008).
History
When it was founded in 1642, the village, then known as Ville-Marie, had its first wooden chapel inside the palisade at Pointe-à-Callière, today the site of Montreal’s major archaeological museum.From chapel to church
Dedicated to Our Lady the Blessed Virgin – “Notre Dame” – the small original chapel was operated at first by the Jesuits. Then came the Sulpician Fathers, who in 1657 undertook construction of a larger church. The Sulpician François Dollier de Casson was its architect, and the present-day Notre-Dame Street served as the original site. Its construction, in Baroque style was completed between 1672 and 1683.
A larger church is planned
By 1800, Dollier’s church had become too small, and the Fabrique decided to build the church we know today. To design the new church, the building council engaged the services of the New York architect James O’Donnell – himself an Irish Protestant by origin. O’Donnell and the Fabrique opted for the Gothic Revival style then in vogue in England and the United States. The main construction work took place between 1824 and 1829.
O’Donnell did not live to see his work completed. He died in Montreal in 1830. Just prior to his death, he had converted to Catholicism, and was buried in the new church’s crypt, where his grave is marked by a plaque.
Montreal’s twin towers
The old church set back from the road was demolished in the summer of 1830, except for its bell tower, which survived until 1843, when Notre-Dame Basilica’s twin towers were completed by the architect John Ostell. The western tower, nicknamed La Persévérance (Perseverance) and finished in 1841, houses the great bell christened “Jean-Baptiste,” weighing 11 tons (11,000 kilograms or 24,000 pounds). The eastern tower, nicknamed La Tempérance (Temperance), was completed in 1843 and houses a carillon of 10 bells.

Around the red brick building you often see teams of photographers with wedding couples, the brides either in European white dresses, Asian red dresses or traditionally Vietnamese: in the red áo dài.

Archbishop of Paris Cardinal André Vingt-Trois is due to preside over a remembrance Mass for the victims of the Paris attack on Sunday, November 15 at the Cathedral of Notre-Dame of Paris. At least 128 people have died so far in the deadliest terrorist attack in the history of France.
Another 200 people were injured, 80 of them critically in Fridays attacks. Authorities say that eight attackers were killed - seven detonating suicide bombs and one shot dead by security forces in the Bataclan concert hall.

An unnamed Turkish official has confirmed the nationalities of the three men who carried out Tuesday’s deadly attack on Istanbul’s airport as Russian, Uzbek and Kyrgyz nationals, Turkish media and officials told various media outlets.Turkey believes Islamic State militants were behind the suicide gun and bomb attack killing 43 and wounding more than 230 people – many of them airport workers, BBC News reported Thursday....
