Keith Jarrett (born May 8, 1945) is an American pianist and composer who performs both jazz and classical music.
Jarrett started his career with Art Blakey, moving on to play with Charles Lloyd and Miles Davis. Since the early 1970s he has enjoyed a great deal of success as a group leader and a solo performer in jazz, jazz fusion, and classical music. His improvisations draw from the traditions of jazz and other genres, especially Western classical music, gospel, blues, and ethnic folk music.
In 2003, Jarrett received the Polar Music Prize, the first (and to this day only) recipient not to share the prize with a co-recipient, and in 2004 he received the Léonie Sonning Music Prize.
In 2008, he was inducted into the Down Beat Hall of Fame in the magazine's 73rd Annual Readers' Poll.
Keith Jarrett was born on May 8, 1945, in Allentown, Pennsylvania, to a mother of Slovenian descent and a father of either French or Scots-Irish descent. He grew up in suburban Allentown with significant early exposure to music. Jarrett possesses absolute pitch, and he displayed prodigious musical talents as a young child. He began piano lessons just before his third birthday, and at age five he appeared on a TV talent program hosted by the swing bandleader Paul Whiteman. Jarrett gave his first formal piano recital at the age of seven, playing works by composers including Mozart, Bach, Beethoven, and Saint-Saëns, and ending with two of his own compositions. Encouraged especially by his mother, Jarrett took intensive classical piano lessons with a series of teachers, including Eleanor Sokoloff of the Curtis Institute.
Rhode Island (i/ˌroʊdˈaɪlənd/, officially the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations, is a state in the New England region of the United States. Rhode Island is the smallest in area, the eighth least populous, and the second most densely populated (behind New Jersey) of the 50 U.S. states; its official name is also the longest of any state in the Union. Rhode Island is bordered by Connecticut to the west, Massachusetts to the north and east, and the Atlantic Ocean (via Rhode Island Sound and Block Island Sound) to the south.
On May 4, 1776, Rhode Island became the first of the Thirteen Colonies to renounce its allegiance to the British Crown, and later, was the fourth to ratify—February 9, 1778—the Articles of Confederation between the newly sovereign states. It boycotted the 1787 convention that drew up the United States Constitution, and initially refused to ratify it. On May 29, 1790, Rhode Island became the thirteenth and last state to ratify the Constitution.
Julian Marshall (24 June 1836 – 21 November 1903) was an English amateur musician, music and print collector, tennis player and writer.
Marshall was born in Headingley, Yorkshire to a flax-spinning family. His father, John Marshall had been Member of Parliament (MP) for Leeds. His grandfather was industrialist John Marshall, who was also an MP. Marshall attended Harrow School in London, before joining the family business. As a young man, Marshall started collecting prints, and later, music manuscripts. He was also a music writer and contributed work to the first edition of the Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians.
Marshall codified the rules of real tennis in 1872. In 1873 he played an important early lawn match with William Hart Dyke and John Moyer Heathcote at Lullingstone Castle. By 1877 the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club was proposing the first Wimbledon Championships, and a review of the rules was required. Marshall with his fellow MCC commissioner Heathcote, and Henry Jones of the All England club laid down the rules that are little changed to this day in time for the first Wimbledon tournament on 9 July 1877.

In 1976, British talk show host David Frost conducted 11 in-depth interviews with disgraced former U.S. President Richard M. Nixon. Those televised talks formed the basis for Peter Morgan's acclaimed 2006 play Frost/Nixon. The lead actors from the current national stage tour, Stacy Keach (Nixon) and Alan Cox (Frost), are joined by Robert Zelnick, a College of Communication journalism professor, who was executive editor for the historic interviews. Actor Bob Ari, who plays Zelnick, participates as well. The panel participants discuss their research for roles, the tragedy of Nixon's personality, the influence of reviews and critics, and the conflation of history and entertainment. Hosted by College of Communication on January 29, 2009.
