PUNE: The crime branch of the Pune police on Sunday arrested Sagar Rajput, a member of the Gajanan Marne gang, under the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA).
Rajput had injured two policemen in a shootout in Vadodara when police had gone to arrest him on August 10.
Earlier, the Vadodara police had arrested Rajput under two cases, including attempt to commit the murder of the policemen. His custody was transferred to the Pune police, following the expiry of his police custody remand on Saturday. He was brought to the city amid tight protection and arrested under MCOCA. He has been sent in police custody remand till September 3.
A police officer said the members of the Marne gang, including Rajput, had murdered rival Nilesh Ghaywal gang member Amol Badhe and injured his aide Santosh Kamble in 2014. Badhe was killed for avenging the murder of Marne's aide Sachin Kudle. Kamble had registered a murder complaint against Marne gang members with the Vishrambaug police station.
Police arrested 20 suspects and recovered firearms, sharp weapons and cash from them. Investigations revealed that the suspects were members of the organised crime syndicate, following which former additional commissioner of police Shahaji Solunke granted permission to the crime branch to invoke charges of MCOCA against the suspects even as Rajput managed to evade police arrest.
Former police commissioner K K Pathak granted permission to file chargesheet against the suspects under MCOCA, following which two chargesheets were filed against the suspects. A massive hunt was launched to arrest Rajput. He later allegedly murdered a sarpanch in Bigwan in rural Pune in the same year. The rural police had also invoked charges of MCOCA against him.
A special court here declared him as a proclaimed offender in 2015, but he failed to surrender himself before the court and continued to evade arrest.
The crime branch received information that the gangster was based in Vadodara and rushed there for verification where Rajput, fearing arrest, injured two policemen in a shootout. In self-defence, the policemen opened fire on him and took him into custody with the help of the Vadadora police.
Meanwhile, injured assistant inspector Ranjit Bhoite and constable Dilip More were shifted from Vadodara to Pune for further medical treatment.
