Dil Chahta Hai (English: 'The Heart Desires ) is a 2001 Indian comedy-drama film starring Aamir Khan, Saif Ali Khan, Akshaye Khanna, Preity Zinta, Sonali Kulkarni, and Dimple Kapadia. The first film written and directed by Farhan Akhtar, it is set in modern-day urban Mumbai and Sydney, and focuses on a major period of transition in the lives of three young friends.
In 2001, the film won National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Hindi. It performed better in the urban areas of the country compared to the rural areas, which was attributed by critics to the city-oriented lifestyle depicted in which all the characters are from rich or upper-middle-class families. Over the years, it has attained a cult status.
This movie is about three childhood friends, Akash Malhotra (Aamir Khan), Sameer Mulchandani (Saif Ali Khan), and Siddharth "Sid" Sinha (Akshaye Khanna) who, after college, fall in love. In the beginning, Akash does not believe in the concept of love and does not engage in relationships lasting more than two weeks. Sameer is a genial, well-meaning, desperately romantic, but confused guy who is prone to romantic infatuations and believes to have found true love whenever he gets attracted to a girl. Sid, an artist by profession and the most mature of the three, is not interested in trivial romances and is dedicated to his work.
Three young men Akash, Sameer, and Siddharth are close friends, but their tastes and characters are completely incompatible. So when Siddharth falls in love with a much older woman, Tara, a woman who has been unsuccessful in keeping her marriage intact as well as alcohol-dependent, widens the rift between the trio, forcing them to part company. Years later, the trio will be re-united, they will be much mature and understanding, but will they still accept Siddharth love for Tara, especially when they themselves have fallen in love with women around their respective ages?

Akash Malhotra: Dad, there is more to life than just signing checks.::Akash's father: Really... What is that?::Akash Malhotra: I don't know, but as soon as I do, you will be the first to know.
[Akash and Shalini are sitting next to each other in the plane]::Akash Malhotra: So where are you going?::Shalini: ...This flight goes to Sydney::Akash Malhotra: I know, but where are *you* going?::Shalini: To Sydney!::Akash Malhotra: What a coincidence, the three of us are going to Sydney!::Shalini: Three of us?::Akash Malhotra: You, me, and this flight.
Siddharth Sinha: Take this sand for instance, the tighter you try to hold it, the more it slips out of our hand.
Pooja: [Looking at a photo] Are they your friends?::Sameer: Yeah. [Picks the photo up for a close view] That's Sid, and this is Akash.::Pooja: Seems to be a very deep friendship!::Sameer: Yeah, either the friendship is deep... or the photo is 3d.::Sameer: [Pooja looks at him weirdly] Sorry... bad joke.
Dil Chahta Hai, Dil Chahta Hai
Dil Chahta Hai, Kabhi Na Beete Chamkeele Din
Dil Chahta Hai, Hum Na Rahein Kabhi Yaaron Ke Bin
Din Din Bhar Ho Pyaari Baatein
Jhoome Shaame, Gaaye Raatein
Masti Mein Rahe Dooba Dooba Hameshaa Samaa
Humko Raahon Mein Yoonhi Milti Rahein Khushiyaan
Dil Chahta Hai, Kabhi Na Beete Chamkile Din,
Dil Chahta Hai, Hum Na Rahe Kabhi Yaaron Ke Bin
Jagmagaate Hain, Jhilmilaate Hain Apne Raastein
Yeh Khushi Rahe, Roshni Rahe Apne Waaste
Oh Oh Oh ...
Jahan Ruke Hum, Jahan Bhi Jaayein
Jo Hum Chaahein, Voh Hum Paayein
Masti Mein Rahe Dooba Dooba Hameshaa Samaa
Humko Raahon Mein Yoonhi Milti Rahein Khushiyaan
Dil Chahta Hai, Dil Chahta Hai
Kaisa Ajab Yeh Safar Hai, Socho To Har Ik Hi Bekhabar Hai
Usko Jaana Kidhar Hai, Jo Waqt Aaye, Jaane Kya Dikhaaye
Oh Oh Oh ...
Dil Chahta Hai, Dil Chahta Hai
Dil Chahta Hai, Kabhi Na Beete Chamkeele Din
Dil Chahta Hai, Hum Na Rahein Kabhi Yaaron Ke Bin
