A shipping container is a container with strength suitable to withstand shipment, storage, and handling. Shipping containers range from large reusable steel boxes used for intermodal shipments to the ubiquitous corrugated boxes. In the context of international shipping trade, "container" or "shipping container" is virtually synonymous with "(standard) intermodal freight container" (a container designed to be moved from one mode of transport to another without unloading and reloading).
Freight containers are a reusable transport and storage unit for moving products and raw materials between locations or countries. There are about seventeen million intermodal containers in the world, and a large proportion of the world's long-distance freight generated by international trade is transported in shipping containers. In addition, it's estimated that several million of these containers have now been discarded due to the shipping cost of sending them back to their port of origin. Their invention made a major contribution to the globalization of commerce in the second half of the 20th century, dramatically reducing the cost of transporting goods and hence of long-distance trade.
A 20ft Shipping Container can be a challenging space to work with when constructing a home. Thankfully, with years of experience building super-yachts and racing boats, shipwright Evans is no stranger to working in small spaces and when it came to building his own home he has done a truly spectacular job of, quite literally, thinking inside the box. As a kid Steve Rees played in caves and learned how the earth could cool. As an adult, he buried two shipping containers and created an off-grid retirement home for himself and his wife Shirley. After a few years of camping on their 10 acre plot in Northern California, they bought two shipping containers, hired an excavator and got to work. Doing most of the work themselves, their finished home cost them $30,000 (solar included). Their 640-square-foot space cost them less than $50 per square foot. Rees explains that while this is less than conventional construction costs, the savings only begin with construction. With a solar-powered well, a bit of propane and solar tubes for most of their light, they haven’t had any city water or electric bills since 2002. Winter temperatures in their ...
OGB presents this informal summary of the pros and cons of shipping container buildings by Ted Elsasser, owner of http://www.SouthwestSustainableBuilders.com , where Ted explains pros vs. cons of shipping container buildings. Shipping containers have a lot of advantages: high availability, you can quickly get a lockable shelter, they are easily moved, and relatively affordable. But their thermal performance is poor without adding a good deal of additional construction, there are condensation issues, etc.

In this video, we meet Joseph RM Dupuis and take a tour of his off-grid shipping container cabin in Ontario, Canada. Joseph built the 355 square foot shipping container using three 20 foot x 8 foot shipping containers that he modified so that the indoor space was completely open concept. The tiny home was designed on the premise that it could be safely closed up for weeks at a time and still be secure. Joseph says he also chose to build with shipping containers because they're readily available and reasonably affordable. The micro cabin is insulated with spray foam on the interior walls, and bats on the curtain walls that were built in the openings at the ends of the shipping containers. For heat, Joseph installed in-floor radiant heating and a wood stove. For power, he bought a 2 ...

Company transforms shipping containers to houses A company in Denmark has introduced a low-cost and environmentally-friendly solution for housing shortages. The firm offers floating re-purposed shipping containers. It has transformed old shipping containers into a floating dorm on the Copenhagen harbor. Engineers say the complex is suitable for students. It consists of nine shipping containers, stacked in two levels on a concrete pontoon. The Danish company has used ecological technologies such as solar panels to generate energy. It says the cost of one room would be about 600 dollars per month, which is reasonable in Denmark. Living in these days can mean a lot more that just having a shelter, food and clothing. People have evolved a lot in the last 50 years and the trend is of an exponential growth. The differences between generations will be more significant than there are now. As a proof that people have already started to change their minds and philosophy are the random bursts of nonconformism, meaning that some people no longer feel represented by the masses, and their image can’t be associated with an institution of a large group of people. Part of the nonconformism I was talking about is the residential component. People live in more and more diverse houses that suit best their needs. Some people buy large houses with concrete structures or steel and glass to reinforce their social position and other pe...
I had several ton of road gravel brought in as a quality base for my 40 foot shipping container. The driver did a great job placing the gravel exactly where I asked him to. I then took a couple of hours to further level the area and compress the rock before the container arrived
