15 fishermen rescued after two boats sunk
V Narayan | TNN | Aug 22, 2016, 07.00 AM ISTMUMBAI: 15 fishermen were rescued around 70 nautical miles away from North of Mumbai after of the two fishing boats they were onboard sunk at midnight on Sunday. On receipt of the message, the Indian Navy helicopter were pressed to search for the survivors. A total 15 fishermen were rescued and have been admitted to a hospital at Umargam, said the Indian Navy.
The fishing boats--Himsagar and Krishna Sagar--reportedly sunk at sea 7 nautical miles from Umargam and 70 nautical miles away from Mumbai. "A Seaking 42B, all weather helicopter has been launched to search for survivors. All fishermen were picked up by other fishermen in the area. Ships going back to their respective tasks," said the defence spokesperson in Mumbai.
The incident occurred when one of the fishing boats bottom grounded and started sinking. "There are several fishing boats in the area. On witnessing one of the boat sinking, the second boat sailed to its rescue and it too got sunk," said the official.
