'
Projected Gas Well
Production in
NYS' was recorded in
Berkshire, NY on July 9,
2013 at a public meeting sponsored by
Berkshire Alliance for
Sustainable Energy, a community-based organization in
Tioga County, NY.. Jerry Acton, a retired system engineer for
IBM and
Lockheed Martin, has analyzed data on well production from the
Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (
DEP) for the 5 northern PA counties. He has mapped the
Initial Production Values, the measure used by industry to calculate royalty payments, to shale depth and thickness and from his analysis he is able to make projections for counties and towns in
New York on what the actual production would look like.
Penna. gas well production data has been publicly available on the DEP website since
2010, but it takes a system analyst's approach to see the forest through the trees. Is this all a house of cards? You decide. The data speaks for itself. See playlist for complete program that also includes presentation by
Greg May of Tompkins
Trust on mortgage and insurance issues. Editing and post-production by
Cris McConkey.

About Jerry Acton:
Before retiring to become a bird photographer, Jerry worked for 31 years as a systems engineer for IBM and Lockheed Martin.
Systems engineering is the process of examining complex problems, identifying patterns and interactions, and using that high level view to organize information and team efforts. These skills are independent of the specific technical details of the system.
As a
Systems Architect, the highest level of systems engineer, Jerry was a "go-to" guy to help out on large complex programs that were having difficulties. His first success was the original
LAMPS helicopter back in
1980, the remaining mainstay of Owego's business base. He was a lead systems engineer and architect on a wide variety of large complex systems, including an
Air Force Search and Rescue Helicopter, Air Force
Special Operations C-130, a state-wide transportation system for the state of
Minnesota, an integrated world-wide Multi-service
Military Command and Control system, postal systems, and finally the
Presidential Helicopter.
Jerry has brought his systems engineering skills out of retirement to study whether gas well performance in
Pennsylvania can be used to predict gas well performance in New York.
