Thor delights fans in Brisbane

Chris Hemsworth and Tom Hiddleston film scenes for Thor in Brisbane on Monday, taking time out to chat to fans and the media.

Some of those fans had camped overnight for the best vantage point to watch two scenes of Thor: Ragnarok being filmed in the Brisbane CBD.

Roads around the filming location were closed causing slight commuter chaos, but as the crowd screamed as Hemsworth and Hiddleston made their appearance, it almost felt worthwhile.

As the last hours of filming rolled on Hiddleston took a brief moment between scenes to run over to the cordens and take selfies with fans and hand out some Thor posters.

Briefly addressing the media who had flocked to the scene to cover the moment Hollywood came to Brisbane, Hiddleston said the local fans who had come out for the day were great.

Clearly enjoying his time on set, Hemsworth ambushed a press conference being held by director Taika Waititi to proclaim how much Brisbane had transformed for the scene.

"(Filming is) going good," he said before rushing off to take selfies with the crowd.

"It looks very much like New York. It's great to be here, (the fans) are awesome."

The filming, which took place on the corner of Margaret and Albert Streets in the city on the site of a demolished building, commenced in earnest at 7am and was expected to wrap up by 5pm before the sun went down.

The 10-hour shoot covered approximately one and a half pages of the script but director Waititi said everything had run smoothly.

"We have had a pretty good day shooting in this construction site and down on the street making downtown Brisbane look like downtown New York," said.

"It's going pretty smoothly."

With Marvel keeping details about the plot of the third film in the Thor franchise a closely guarded secret, Waititi wouldn't reveal any details about what was being shot on Monday but eagle-eyed fans did notice the letters "RIP" being written on Hemsworth's arm.

"I can't tell you what that means... all I can say is they are in a construction site," he said.

Emma Andrews, the daughter of Federal MP Karen Andrews, was given a chance to appear in the film as an extra and said she had a very exciting day despite the 4.30am call to set.

"(Hiddleston and Hemsworth) were so down to earth and so kind and really respectful of everyone who has put in a lot of work today," she said.

"It's been fun having the experience."

Lord Mayor Graham Quirk was given a brief tour of the set

"This has been a terrific boost, it goes on the back of what has been a doubling of film production in the last five years," he said.

"What's important is we are seen as a friendly city in terms of a destination in terms of film production, whatever that filming might be."

Filming in the city will continue throughout the week with various locations being used to fill in for New York over coming days.
