Back in late February Leonardo DiCaprio finally won his Oscar. But the actor, who snagged the award for his leading role in The Revenant, used most of his time on stage to make a different, but not totally unexpected, kind of speech. "Making The Revenant was about man's relationship to the natural world," he said. "Climate change is real. It is happening right now." And now the actor-environmentalist has just returned from a trip to Indonesia, where he caused quite a stir with some comments he made on an Instagram post.

The Indonesian government stoked an unprecedented attack on the security and rights of sexual and gender minorities in early 2016. The government campaign included hateful rhetoric, discriminatory edicts, and the use of force to repress peaceful assembly.
Officials’ biased and untrue statements about lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) people provided social sanction for harassment and violence against LGBT Indonesians, and even death threats by militant Islamists. State institutions, including the National Broadcasting Commission and the National Child Protection Commission, issued censorship directives banning information and broadcasts that portrayed the lives of LGBT people as “normal” as well as so-called “propaganda” about LGBT lives. That combination of discriminatory rhetoric and policy decisions harmed the physical security and right to free expression of LGBT people across the country.

The United States has warned that the Indonesian government must ensure Monday's planned referendum in East Timor goes ahead in a free and fair environment.
The warning comes as anti-independence militiamen stormed through East Timor's capital Dilli on Thursday in a rampage that left three people dead and threw next week's independence vote into doubt.
Witnesses say at least two of the people were killed when militiamen fired at rock-throwing separatists.
Violence erupted in East Timor just four days before an August 30 referendum.
The referendum offers East Timor's 800-thousand people a choice between independence or remaining part of Indonesia as an autonomous province.
The United Nations has postponed the ballot twice already because of violence in the former Portuguese colony.
But U-N officials in New York said Thursday there were no plans to delay the vote again.
They fear any further postponement could help anti-independence forces.
Meanwhile in Washington, the U-S State Department raised concerns about the ability of the people of East Timor to have a free and fair referendum.

"While we expect the vote to be held as scheduled, we note that recent unrest raises questions as to the ability of the people to vote in an environment that is fair and is free of intimidation and is peaceful. The United States is deeply concerned about these changes in the security situation. After the successful registration drive there have been several clear incidence of violence and physical intimidation by groups that oppose the prospect of independence for East Timor including against UNIMAT personnel and American international observers. That pro-integration militia group remains free to act in such a manner that puts in doubt the government of Indonesia's stated willingness to maintain the conditions for a successful vote."

In Lisbon, exiled East Timorese Nobel laureate Jose Ramos-Horta called Thursday's violence "a provocation, an act of desperation" by the Indonesian military because they realised the autonomy proposal would be defeated.
U-S State Department spokesman James Foley described the Indonesia government's role in the violence as troubling.

"Furthermore there have been statements predicting violence and chaos some attributed to Indonesian government officials which can only be described as irresponsible. These also constitute a serious form of intimidation and are extremely troubling. Indonesia has a clear responsibility to provide security and maintain order in East Timor, not only in the coming days, but throughout an orderly transition to East Timor's status, regardless of the result of Monday's vote - whether it be for autonomy within Indonesia or independence. We have communicated our concerns at the highest levels directly, repeatedly and recently. Despite the assurances we have received, violence and intimidation continue to pose a great risk to the success of the U-N administered vote. Urgent remedial attention and action is required. Indonesia must create an environment free of intimidation in which to hold the vote, and furthermore reassure all parties that it will accept and uphold the decision of the people of East Timor. "

Tesso Nilo National Park is a national park in Riau Province, Sumatra, Indonesia. It was declared a national park by the Indonesian government in 2004.The original area of the park was 385.76 km², but the decision has been made to expand it to 1000 km². Tesso Nilo National Park houses some of the largest coherent lowland rainforests remaining on Sumatra. The Center for Biodiversity Management has surveyed over 1,800 plots in tropical forests around the world. They found that no other plot has as many vascular plants as in Tesso Nilo. Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI) surveyed forests throughout Sumatra, and also found that Tesso Nilo housed by far the most species.

Prior to the execution there was a protest at the Indonesian Embassy in Abuja seeking for leniency in the sentence. However, more executions would still take place, Indian and Pakistan governments are working towards getting leniency for their convicted citizens.

Drug Trafficking: Indonesian Government executes three Nigerians
The Indonesian government, today executed three Nigerians convicted of drug trafficking. Prior to the execution there was a protest at the Indonesian Embassy in Abuja seeking for leniency in the sentence. However, more executions would still take place, Indian and Pakistan governments are working towards getting leniency for their convicted citizens.

The United States has warned that the Indonesian government must ensure Monday's planned referendum in East Timor goes ahead in a free and fair environment.
The warning comes as anti-independence militiamen stormed through East Timor's capital Dilli on Thursday in a rampage that left three people dead and threw next week's independence vote into doubt.
Witnesses say at least two of the people were killed when militiamen fired at rock-throwing separatists.
Violence erupted in East Timor just four days before an August 30 referendum.
The referendum offers East Timor's 800-thousand people a choice between independence or remaining part of Indonesia as an autonomous province.
The United Nations has postponed the ballot twice already because of violence in the former Portuguese colony.
But U-N officials in New York said Thursday there were no plans to delay the vote again.
They fear any further postponement could help anti-independence forces.
Meanwhile in Washington, the U-S State Department raised concerns about the ability of the people of East Timor to have a free and fair referendum.

"While we expect the vote to be held as scheduled, we note that recent unrest raises questions as to the ability of the people to vote in an environment that is fair and is free of intimidation and is peaceful. The United States is deeply concerned about these changes in the security situation. After the successful registration drive there have been several clear incidence of violence and physical intimidation by groups that oppose the prospect of independence for East Timor including against UNIMAT personnel and American international observers. That pro-integration militia group remains free to act in such a manner that puts in doubt the government of Indonesia's stated willingness to maintain the conditions for a successful vote."

"Furthermore there have been statements predicting violence and chaos some attributed to Indonesian government officials which can only be described as irresponsible. These also constitute a serious form of intimidation and are extremely troubling. Indonesia has a clear responsibility to provide security and maintain order in East Timor, not only in the coming days, but throughout an orderly transition to East Timor's status, regardless of the result of Monday's vote - whether it be for autonomy within Indonesia or independence. We have communicated our concerns at the highest levels directly, repeatedly and recently. Despite the assurances we have received, violence and intimidation continue to pose a great risk to the success of the U-N administered vote. Urgent remedial attention and action is required. Indonesia must create an environment free of intimidation in which to hold the vote, and furthermore reassure all parties that it will accept and uphold the decision of the people of East Timor. "

It was declared a national park by the Indonesian government in 2004.The original area of the park was 385.76 km², but the decision has been made to expand it to 1000 km². Tesso Nilo National Park houses some of the largest coherent lowland rainforests remaining on Sumatra. The Center for Biodiversity Management has surveyed over 1,800 plots in tropical forests around the world. They found that no other plot has as many vascular plants as in Tesso Nilo. Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI) surveyed forests throughout Sumatra, and also found that Tesso Nilo housed by far the most species.
