In the contemporary world, it’s taken as a given that capitalism, with its free market and profit motive, is based on selfishness and produces selfishness. Socialism is based on selflessness and produces selflessness.
Well, the opposite is true.
Whatever its intentions, socialism produces far more selfish individuals and a far more selfish society than a free-market economy does. And once this widespread selfishness catches on, it is almost impossible to undo it.
Here's an illustration: In 2010 the United States President, Barack Obama, addressed a large audience of college students. At one point in his speech, he announced that young people will now be able to remain on their parents' health insurance plan until age 26. I don't ever recall hearing a louder, more thunderous, or more sustained applause than I did then. Had the president announced that a cure for cancer had been discovered, it is highly doubtful that the applause would have been as loud or as long.
But what were they so happy about? To be told that you can now remain dependent on your parents until age 26 should strike a young person as demeaning, not liberating.
Throughout American history and, for that matter, all of Western history, the great goal of young people was to become a mature adult – beginning with being independent of Mom and Dad. Socialism and the welfare state destroy this aspiration.
In various European countries and now increasingly in the US, it is becoming common for young people to live with their parents well into their 30s and not infrequently beyond. And why not? In the welfare state, taking care of yourself is no longer a virtue.
Why? Because the government will take care of you.
Therefore: Socialism enables -- and as a result produces -- people whose preoccupations become more and more self-centered:
How many benefits will I receive from the government?
Will the government pay for my education?
Will the government pay for my health care?
What is the youngest age at which I can retire?
How much paid vacation time can I get?
How many days can I call in sick and still get paid?
How many weeks of paid paternity or maternity leave am I entitled to?
The list gets longer with every election of a liberal or progressive or left-wing party.

Socialism
Socialism is a variety of social and economic systems characterised by social ownership and democratic control of the means of production; as well as the political ideologies, theories, and movements that aim at their establishment. Social ownership may refer to forms of public, cooperative, or collective ownership; to citizen ownership of equity; or to any combination of these. Although there are many varieties of socialism and there is no single definition encapsulating all of them, social ownership is the common element shared by its various forms.
Socialism can be divided into both non-market and market forms. Non-market socialism involves the substitution of an economic mechanism based on engineering and technical criteria centered around calculation performed in-kind for factor markets, money and the accumulation of capital; therefore functioning according to different economic laws than those of capitalism. Non-market socialism aims to circumvent the inefficiencies and crises traditionally associated with the profit system. By contrast, market socialism retains the use of monetary prices and factor markets for the allocation of capital goods between socially-owned enterprises and, in some cases, the profit motive with respect to their operation. Profits would either accrue to society at large in the form of a social dividend or directly to the workforce of each firm. The feasibility and exact methods of resource allocation and calculation for a socialist system are the subjects of the socialist calculation debate.

To the chagrin of his obese German captor, his weak and cowardly character enables him to survive the war and return to Naples where he has a plan to survive the next world catastrophe.

In the contemporary world, it’s taken as a given that capitalism, with its free market and profit motive, is based on selfishness and produces selfishness. Socialism is based on selflessness and produces selflessness.
Well, the opposite is true.
Whatever its intentions, socialism produces far more selfish individuals and a far more selfish society than a free-market economy does. And once this widespread selfishness catches on, it is almost impossible to undo it.
Here's an illustration: In 2010 the United States President, Barack Obama, addressed a large audience of college students. At one point in his speech, he announced that young people will now be able to remain on their parents' health insurance plan until age 26. I don't ever recall hearing a louder, more thunderous, or more sustained applause than I did then. Had the president announced that a cure for cancer had been discovered, it is highly doubtful that the applause would have been as loud or as long.
But what were they so happy about? To be told that you can now remain dependent on your parents until age 26 should strike a young person as demeaning, not liberating.
Throughout American history and, for that matter, all of Western history, the great goal of young people was to become a mature adult – beginning with being independent of Mom and Dad. Socialism and the welfare state destroy this aspiration.
In various European countries and now increasingly in the US, it is becoming common for young people to live with their parents well into their 30s and not infrequently beyond. And why not? In the welfare state, taking care of yourself is no longer a virtue.
Why? Because the government will take care of you.
Therefore: Socialism enables -- and as a result produces -- people whose preoccupations become more and more self-centered:
How many benefits will I receive from the government?
Will the government pay for my education?
Will the government pay for my health care?
What is the youngest age at which I can retire?
How much paid vacation time can I get?
How many days can I call in sick and still get paid?
How many weeks of paid paternity or maternity leave am I entitled to?
The list gets longer with every election of a liberal or progressive or left-wing party.

For the past two years, she has been reduced to living in an abandoned cinema. “It leaks a lot and the top floor is also collapsing,” she complains. “The economic, political and social situation in Cuba really couldn’t get any worse,” states prominent dissenter Vladimiro Roca. Since September 11th the tourism dollars have stopped flowing and over a third of Cuba’s hotels have closed. “There’s still enormous fear in Cuba but people are starting to criticise the government,” comments Roca. The young are leading the assault, using music to voice their concerns. “You’re scared of change, you’re scared of one person. What’s happening Cuba?” raps Junior Clan. Under pressure to act, Castro has opened his arms to corporate America. “The United States has done a lot to develop agriculture and industry in the world,” he enthuses. For Oswaldo Paya, organiser of the Varela project which collected 11,000 signatories demanding change, it’s not enough. He now faces constant harassment from the security services but remains unrepentant. “We’re basically saying we don’t want to submit to fear any more.”
