Robert Rossen (March 16, 1908 – February 18, 1966) was an American screenwriter, film director, and producer whose film career spanned almost three decades.
His 1949 film All the King's Men won Oscars for Best Picture, Best Actor and Best Supporting Actress, while Rossen was nominated for an Oscar as Best Director. He won the Golden Globe for Best Director and the film won the Golden Globe Award for Best Picture. In 1961 he directed The Hustler, which was nominated for nine Oscars and won two.
After directing and writing for the stage in New York, Rossen moved to Hollywood in 1937. There he worked as a screenwriter for Warner Bros. until 1941, and then interrupted his career to serve until 1944 as the chairman of the Hollywood Writers Mobilization, a body to organize writers for the effort in World War II. In 1945 he joined a picket line against Warner Bros. After making one film for Hal Wallis's newly formed production company, Rossen made one for Columbia Pictures, another for Wallis and most of his later films for his own companies, usually in collaboration with Columbia.

May 7, 2009 - Hauenstein Center Director Gleaves Whitney interviews Robert Rosen, who is a lawyer, historian, and author of "Saving the Jews: Franklin Delano Roosevelt and the Holocaust." Six million Jews died in the Holocaust. Since the 1960s, when a post-World War II generation of historians came of age, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt has increasingly been seen as, at best, standing idly by while this atrocity occurred. But is this an accurate picture? Robert Rosen, author of "Saving the Jews: Franklin Delano Roosevelt and the Holocaust, explored this question and others on May 7 in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Mr. Rosen is a shareholder in the Rosen Law Firm in Charleston, South Carolina. He received his B.A. in history from the University of Virginia in 1969, his M.A. in history from...

It's not enough for him to win: he must force his opponent to acknowledge his superiority. The movie follows Eddie from his match against b...

Over a 30-year period, he was the most accomplished writer and director who was also a longtime member of the Communist Party, but his achievement has not been recognized, his films have been belittled or ignored, his legacy denied. Rossen's films reflected his times and the American scene with a dramatic intensity and personal expression unmatched by any other filmmaker of the period. The stages of his political journey, from idealism about Communism to his rebellion against the Party's betrayal of those ideals, influenced the rendering of his concerns and themesthe flaws of human nature, the complexities of motives, the paradoxes of betrayal, personal a...
