Guilin is a prefecture-level city in the northeast of the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, China, situated on the west bank of the Li River, and bordering Hunan to the north. Its name means, "Forest of Sweet Osmanthus", owing to the large number of fragrant Sweet Osmanthus trees located in the city. The city has long been renowned for its scenery of karst topography and is one of China's most popular tourist destinations.
In 314 BC, a small settlement was established along the banks of the Li River.
During the Qin Dynasty's (221–207 BC) campaigns against the state of Nanyue, the first administration was set up in the area around Guilin.
In 111 BC, during the reign of Emperor Wu of the Han Dynasty, Shi An County was established, which could be regarded as the beginning of the city.
In 507 AD, the town was renamed Guizhou.
Guilin prospered in the Tang and Song dynasties but remained a county. The city was also a nexus between the central government and the southwest border, and it was where regular armies were placed to guard that border. Canals were built through the city so that food supplies could be directly transported from the food-productive Yangtze plain to the farthest southwestern point of the empire.
China, officially the People's Republic of China (PRC), is a sovereign state in East Asia. It is the world's most populous country, with a population of over 1.35 billion. The PRC is a one-party state governed by the Communist Party, with its seat of government in the capital city of Beijing. It exercises jurisdiction over 22 provinces; five autonomous regions; four direct-controlled municipalities (Beijing, Tianjin, Shanghai and Chongqing); two mostly self-governing special administrative regions (Hong Kong and Macau); and claims sovereignty over Taiwan.
Covering approximately 9.6 million square kilometers, China is the world's second-largest country by land area, and either the third or fourth-largest by total area, depending on the method of measurement. China's landscape is vast and diverse, ranging from forest steppes and the Gobi and Taklamakan deserts in the arid north to subtropical forests in the wetter south. The Himalaya, Karakoram, Pamir and Tian Shan mountain ranges separate China from South and Central Asia. The Yangtze and Yellow Rivers, the third- and sixth-longest in the world, run from the Tibetan Plateau to the densely populated eastern seaboard. China's coastline along the Pacific Ocean is 14,500 kilometres (9,000 mi) long, and is bounded by the Bohai, Yellow, East and South China Seas.

http://www.chinaspree.com Guilin is celebrated for its picturesque limestone mountains and the meandering Li River. An ancient Chinese saying describes the landscape in Guilin as the best scenery under heaven. Its misty peaks rise as suddenly from the earth as trees in a forest, they surround the city like mountains floating in an imaginary sea. With China Spree you are never far from the action, so your beautiful hotel is located in the heart of the city on a riverside avenue of the sweet-scented trees and walkway that overlooks the Li River. It's a great place for relaxation and meditation. This part of the country encompasses China's most famous scenic landscapes. While in Guilin we travel to Long Sheng for an off-the-beaten-path hiking tour of the spectacular Dragon Spine Ric...

Coming on a Li-river boat cruise from Guilin to Yangshuo can be a great introduction to the clear rivers and the impressive karst mountain landscape this region is famous for and a true highlight of your China trip. Particularly the middle part between Yangdi and Xing Ping is breath-taking with literally hundreds of karst peaks towering up as huge dragon teeth from both sides of the Li-river up the sky which makes one feel rather small, even on a large tour boat. http://improvephotography.com/china I got to join a group of readers of my blog last week in Guilin, China for an epic photography adventure. We photographed the cormorant fishermen, took pictures of the farmers of the Longji rice terraces, did street photography, and more. These are some of the tips I learned along the way.
A tour around Guilin, China at night including night markets, street food, pagodas and lakes 晚上桂林 So we finally made it to Guilin. We've been waiting for things to cool down and now that it is evening we're going to give you a little tour of the place. So I'm not sure we want to be walking through that tunnel when it gets a bit later in the day because it is pretty dark in there and there are no lights. And people aren't using their headlights. Travel video about destination Lijiang River. Unlike the hustle and bustle of the nearby city of Guilin, in the Guangxi region situated in the heart of China the landscape that follows the Lijiang River has a rural and idyllic atmosphere. Rural life here is blessed with beautiful scenery and the landscape around Guilin is synonymous with the magnificence of the legendary Middle Empire. Numerous stalactites and stalagmites lie within the caves of the region's impressive mountains. Some of the caves, such as the Reed Cave, have in recent years been open to the public. Striking precipices and rock needles unite in a stunningly beautiful panorama full of glorious mystique. Here both wind and water have created a truly remarkable mountain world. In daytime the gravel banks along the shores of th...

Christmas is a great time to travel in Mainland China. While you get time off work or school back home, it is not a public holiday in the Middle Kingdom. It is the low season with cheap prices and no crowds. It is also the time when weather is best in the southern and western parts of the country. So we packed a small backpack and got on the bullet train to the famous Guilin in northern Guangxi province. This heavily promoted region is home to many famous sights: the karst scenery around Li River, Longsheng rice terraces, caves, idyllic villages populated by ethnic minorities... It is one of the most visited places in China and recommended by travel guides as an essential part of any China itinerary. The highlight of the trip was the 6 hours hike among the Longsheng rice terraces. We s...

[6,498_26] A 6 hours Yangdi-Xingping trek along Lijiang. Regular Yangshuo-Yangdi buses take about 1 hour. After the Yangdi ferry crossing, the trek thru' farms & villages to the 2nd ferry crossing at Quanjiazhou takes about 1 hour. There you can take a raft and continued on foot to the 3rd ferry crossing at the 9 Horses Mural Hill where the tram to Xingping will stop by the scenery featured on the RMB 20 note. The tram ride is included in the fare for the 3 ferry crossings. At Xingping Bus Station, there're buses to Yangshuo till about 8 pm. If you start from Xingping in the morning, the scenery featured on the RMB 20 note will not be back lit, but the last Yangdi-Yangshuo bus is around 5 pm. Amateur documentary. Tried to shoot enough random material for a small travel documentary for you to enjoy and me to remember. Sorry about the shitty commentary track. It is already 2 years later after i already had cut and arranged the clips plus made the commentary track and i was still in process of "going to re record the commentary track properly" in my studio. Well, i realised that was never going to happen so i just published it with the sketch version which was recorded with the built in mic of my laptop! Hope the two songs i made for this compensate a little for that. :) Hope you enjoy this!

A group of Australian tourists travelled to China in 1990 - just after the uprising in Tiananmein Square - and they wondered what lay ahead at a time of great change in this previously reclusive country. Nine analogue videos using a primitive hand held and non-stabilised 1985 camcorder (the tape was later upgraded to digital video, then to DVD in 2010) of extensive travel to fourteen cities and regions throughout the huge landmass of China DO capture in often-fuzzy and shaky video the true nature of that vast country and the amazing differences in it's very diverse peoples. Above all, enjoy a tantalising picture of China emerging from a sleepy past to take it's inevitable place as the world's new leading power! Eight more videos of other regions of an amazing China a full twenty two yea...
