Western Sydney Wanderers edge Newcastle Jets with gutsy comeback

For five minutes, last season's wooden spooners looked set to become the A-League's outright leaders.

But after hitting the lead with a controversial 74th-minute goal, Newcastle Jets crashed to earth by allowing Western Sydney Wanderers to score twice in the closing 10 minutes and win 2-1 at Hunter Stadium on Saturday.

Wanderers leave it late to beat Jets

Two late strikes from the Western Sydney Wanderers put a dampener on an otherwise impressive night from the Newcastle Jets.

The Jets appeared on track for their fourth win in five games this season when in-form winger Enver Alivodic opened the scoring, pouncing on the rebound from a Ki-je Lee free kick.

The goal was disputed by Wanderers players after the linesman appeared to raise his flag for offside, only to change his decision after consulting referee Stephen Lucas.

But far from dropping their bundle, the visitors rallied and won a penalty after a Milos Trifunovic foul in the 79th minute, which Spanish striker Andreu calmly converted to equalise.

Seven minutes later, the Wanderers grabbed the lead when substitute Mark Bridge teed up midfielder Mitch Nichols, who blasted a 20-metre shot that beat Jets goalkeeper Mark Birighitti.

It was unfortunate for Birighitti, who had been outstanding all game.

After back-to-back wins, the Wanderers move into the top six for the first time all season, while the Jets remain third.

A win would have lifted Newcastle to 12 points, one ahead of Sydney on top of the competition ladder.

Birighitti kept his team in the game during a scoreless first half, watched by Newcastle's best crowd this season, 14,886.

The 25-year-old gloveman, in his second game after returning from a horrific kick in the face from Sydney striker Shane Smeltz, produced three saves before half-time to foil clear-cut Wanderers chances.

In the 18th minute, his full-stretch dive denied Nichols, then three minutes later he tipped a Scott Neville header over the crossbar.

His best effort, however, was his reflex block when one-one-one with Dario Vidosic in first-half injury time.

Seconds later, Newcastle almost scored when Trifunovic blasted a shot that Wanderers goalkeeper Andrew Redmayne pushed wide of the right-hand post.

Newcastle's most effective weapon in the opening stanza was Alivodic, who tormented the visitors with his pace and creativity.

His 40th-minute cross presented Serbian countryman Trifunovic with Newcastle's best first-half chance, but the striker's free header flew over the crossbar.

Four minutes later, Alidovic bent a long-range right-foot shot that whistled past Western Sydney's goal.

Birighitti was again called upon in the 66th minute, when Bridge threaded a ball through to Nicholls, whose sliding toe poke could not beat the Newcastle custodian.
