Everything you need to know about finding a Verandah Builder

Verandahs are special places, where outdoors meets indoors. They’re the space where you are shaded from the sun and rain, yet aren’t stuck indoors.  It’s where we place our outdoor furniture such as outdoor settings, rocking chairs and hammocks and grow plants in hangers, pots and baskets.

Types of Verandahs

• Flat verandah – This is the simplest and most versatile design. A flat roofed verandah can be attached to almost any building and can be shaped to fit most plans. You can also use a flat roof veranda as a stand-alone structure, such as around a pool.
• Curved verandah – A good reason to choose this type of verandah is because you can use the curve to match elegantly to another structure, say a porch or flat verandah. It provides a neat bridge between existing structures. You can also have a curved verandah to break the flatness of straight lines. 
• Bullnose roofed verandah – Offers extra shelter from the sun, rain and to a certain extent the wind. This type of verandah really adds a focal point to your whole home and it can be matching or a completely contrasting colour. Bullnose verandahs are usually made from powder coated corrugated iron. 
• Gable end roofed verandah – This type of verandah is common if you want to use the verandah for something tall, for example extended out to park a car under. It has its own pitched roof, so can be a self-supporting structure as well as being attached to the house.

Choosing Your Verandahs

If you want to add a verandah to an existing home, you will need to work out how much space you want to give to your new construction. Here are some questions to consider:

• Uses: What activities will you and your family use the verandah for?
• Features: What type of roof do you want? What will go with the house? What colours would be best? Do you want one or more skylight panels in the verandah roof? 
• Size: What is the proposed width of the verandah and how will that impinge on the garden space? What effect will it have on the light in the house?
• Height: If you are having the verandah attached to the house at what height will it be? Will it need a gabled roof line in order to be tall enough? What impact will a bullnose shape have on tall people entering your home?
• Budget: Will your budget stretch far enough to provide you with optional extras such as skylight panels, guttering and water tank?
