September 29, 2015 — Even as WordPress continues to globalize, many theme and plugin authors still do not implement internationalization/localization functions into their code; for one of two reasons. One, perhaps they simply don’t realize it’s a “thing” – I hope this presentation will change that fact. Two, they’re afraid of learning the ins and outs of the necessary functions because it can seem confusing at first – I hope this presentation will demonstrate how easy it can be.
In this presentation I’ talk about why i18n/l10n is important, use examples that show how to use many of the more common translation functions, and with luck get more developers to use them in their products in the future.
September 27, 2015 — A talk about what GlotPress is, the history of it, what it means for WordPress and how the future will look like.
August 26, 2015 — In 2014 after the release of WordPress 4.0 international downloads of the software surpassed English downloads for the first time. This flash talk explains what lead to that and how a team of amazing WordPress contributors who translate the software in hundreds of languages made that leap possible. It clarifies the terms internationalization (i18n) and localization (l10n) and explains the benefits of writing translation-ready plugins and themes. It also gives useful tips on how to get started contributing to the WordPress Polyglots team.
July 16, 2015 — 2014 was the first year non-English downloads surpassed English downloads of WordPress. More than 50% of WordPress downloads are for localized versions. Some plugins are “translated” into many languages, but are you offering non-English support? Let’s talk about why you should, and the business opportunity they are missing.
July 14, 2015 — When we think about making our site, theme, or plugin welcoming to users around the world, we often focus on translation. While very important, there’s more to localization (l10n) and internationalization (i18n) than just that.
This talk covers some of the many cultural and practical differences that should affect our design choices, our code, and how we reach out to our global base of users and customers.
