Jonathan Swift (30 November 1667 – 19 October 1745) was an Anglo-Irishsatirist, essayist, political pamphleteer (first for the Whigs, then for the Tories), poet and cleric who became Dean of St Patrick's Cathedral, Dublin.
Swift is remembered for works such as Gulliver's Travels, A Modest Proposal, A Journal to Stella, Drapier's Letters, The Battle of the Books, An Argument Against Abolishing Christianity and A Tale of a Tub. He is regarded by the Encyclopædia Britannica as the foremost prose satirist in the English language, and is less well known for his poetry. He originally published all of his works under pseudonyms – such as Lemuel Gulliver, Isaac Bickerstaff, Drapier's Letters as MB Drapier – or anonymously. He is also known for being a master of two styles of satire, the Horatian and Juvenalian styles.
Jonathan Swift was born in Dublin, Ireland. He was the second child and only son of Jonathan Swift (1640–1667) and his wife Abigail Erick (or Herrick), of Frisby on the Wreake. His father, a native of Goodrich, Herefordshire, accompanied his brothers to Ireland to seek their fortunes in law after their Royalist father's estate was brought to ruin during the English Civil War. Swift's father died in Dublin about seven months before he was born. His mother returned to England after his birth, leaving him in the care of his influential uncle, Godwin, a close friend and confidant of Sir John Temple, whose son later employed Swift as his secretary.

A video detailing the biography of political satirist Jonathan Swift
UW Professor of English, Thomas Lockwood, explores the dark genius of Jonathan Swift, one of the greatest satirists in world literature. Regarded as an intensely controversial figure, a brilliant political combatant in British history, a national hero in Ireland, and arguably the greatest satirist in world literature, Swift's contemporaries loved him for his comic genius, ranking him with Rabelais and Cervantes. The Victorians of the next century thought he must have been mad. To those who lived through the nightmare of twentieth-century world warfare, Swift seemed not only sane but a prophet. Lockwood’s talk is part of the Katz Distinguished Lectures in the Humanities, a series named in memory of Solomon Katz, who served for 53 years at the UW in many capacities, including as Chair of th...
Explore's Swift's critique of the English landlords, and the popularity of pseudo-science in the 18th century.
A Tale of a Tub was the first major work written by Jonathan Swift, composed between 1694 and 1697, that was eventually published in 1704. It is arguably his most difficult satire, and perhaps his most masterly. The Tale is a prose parody which is divided into sections of "digression" and a "tale" of three brothers, each representing one of the main branches of western Christianity. A Tale was long regarded as a satire on religion itself, and has famously been attacked for that, starting with William Wotton. The "tale" presents a consistent satire of religious excess, while the digressions are a series of parodies of contemporary writing in literature, politics, theology, Biblical exegesis, and medicine. The overarching parody is of enthusiasm, pride, and credulity. At the time it was writ...

Ezra Levant of TheRebel.media reports: More than 40,000 people signed a petition to keep a man named Daryush Valizadeh out of Canada. Is he a terrorist or something? No, Valizadeh, a.k.a., Roosh V, isn't a criminal. Unless you count the "thought crime" of daring to disagree with radical feminism. Roosh V is an author and men's rights activist who started out as a "pick up artist." He's as candid about the techniques he's used to bed women as he is about the politically incorrect social and cultural views that are now a major focus of his message. Roosh V actually upsets the sexually promiscuous Left far more than he does social conservatives, because he points out their hypocrisy. The most serious charge against him is that he wants to "legalize rape," but after reading his essay about ...

Read your free e-book: http://installapp.us/mebk/50/en/B003U8A7MU/book Swift's Gulliver's Travels was intended, as he says in a letter toalexander Pope, "to vex the world, not to divert it." 1724-25 saw the publication of The Drapier Letters, which gained Swift enormous popularity in Ireland, and the completion of Gulliver's Travels. The progressive darkness of the latter work is an indication of the extent to which his misanthropic tendencies became more and more markedly manifest, had taken greater and greater hold upon his mind. In 1726 Gulliver's Travels was published.
In Swift's letters to his adored Stella, we see an elaborate combination of language and code to tease his reader but still communicate intimacy. The denial of full disclosure and the refusal to reveal all is part of the game of seduction. The Age of Reason began, and English scholars of mathematics and science like Isaac Newton started publishing their books in English instead of Latin. Jonathan Swift would attempt to save the English language from perpetual change, followed by Samuel Johnson who would write the A Dictionary of the English Language, made up of 43,000 words and definitions, written in seven years and published in 1755. Though the upper and lower classes found no reason to change or improve their grammar, the middle class used it to their advantage in joining polite society. William Cobbett, a son of the lower middle class and writer of Rural Rides, advising those who wish to rise above their station that writing and speaking properly was essential. As English began to replace Gaelic in Scotland it took on ...
