The pre-election innovation announcements by the government were welcome but the election was a huge missed opportunity from all shades of politics to take our collective heads out of the sand and to put innovation at the heart of the public expenditure agenda.

Environment Minister Greg Hunt's stunning about-face to reinstate funding and priority to climate research – just months after staff cutbacks that were internationally criticised as jeopardising Australia's leading role in the field – is welcome but to be viewed with suspicion. 

Students are told there is no way to prepare for the NAPLAN tests.

The NAPLAN results are out and again they are incendiary. As a teacher I used to, in jest, refer to them as Napalm, since they were so destructive to student education. Sadly this joke has become a reality.
