📍ABANDONED OULTON ABBEY
📖 HISTORY
St Mary's Abbey, Oulton is a former Benedictine convent located in the village of Oulton near Stone in Staffordshire, England. The Abbey church is Grade II* listed, and other buildings are Grade II. The Benedictine community was founded in 1624 in Ghent, from a motherhouse established in Brussels in 1598 by Lady Mary Percy. In 1794 as a result of the French Revolution the nuns were forced to flee to England, settling initially in Preston, moving in 1811 to Caverswall Castle, Stoke on Trent.
Oulton House was built in 1720 by solicitor Thomas Dent, and gradually extended. It was purchased by brewer John Joule in 1832. By the 1850s it was in use as a private asylum.
In 1853 the sisters purchased Oulton House and grounds. They commissioned Edward Welby Pugin to adapt the house and build a church. A chapter house, presbytery and sacristy were added in 1892. In 1925 a chapel dedicated to St Benedict was built between the chapter house and the sanctuary, to the south.
The sisters operated a small boarding school at the Abbey until 1969, after which the school building was converted into a retreat centre for up to twenty-four retreatants. This continued until 1989 when the main building was converted again, for adult nursing care. Three Oulton nuns transferred to Kylemore Abbey in Ireland in 1992. In 2002 the Benedictine community from Fernham Priory, Oxfordshire, closed their house and many members moved into Oulton Abbey.
The Abbey community was under the charge of an Abbess (superior) who was elected by the community members and held the position for life. Since 1624 there have been 22 Abbesses. Recent superiors are listed below:
Dame Juliana Forster (1837–1869) – Brought the community to Oulton and oversaw the building of the church
Dame Mary Catherine Beech (1869–1899) – Oversaw the extensions and remodelling of Oulton House
Dame Laurentia Ward (1900–1921) – The daughter of William George Ward
Dame Gertrude Beech (1921–1944) – Extended the church with the new chapel
Dame Mary Agnes Spray (1944–1988) – Oversaw the closure of the school and the opening of the retreat house
Dame Mary Benedicta Scott (1988–2019) – Oversaw the opening of the nursing home and the closure of the Abbey.
A new building was erected as a nursing home in the Abbey grounds in 2017. A nursery school also operates within the grounds. By 2019, with just three nuns remaining in the community, the decision was taken to close the monastic community at the Abbey, with the remaining nuns joining Stanbrook Abbey in North Yorkshire. Only the last superior, Dame Benedicta Scott, remained at Oulton as a resident of the nursing home, until her passing in March 2024. A priest also remains in residence and the chapel continues as a public Mass Centre.
The property has subsequently undergone substantial refurbishment and is occupied by the Oulton Abbey Care Home.
Unfortunately we couldn't get in, the security guard only allowed us to film from the outside.

Nigel Farage and Lee Anderson get to Parliament and warn 'the fox is in the henhouse'
Nigel Farage, Lee Anderson and Reform’s three other MPs came to Parliament with a warning that “the fox is in the henhouse”.
Ashfield MP Mr Anderson, who defected from the Tories in the last Parliament and was re-elected for the East Midlands’ constituency, put out the message as the Reformers posed in the Great Hall.
Reform won five seats in the July 4 election. But this was less than the 13 predicted by the exit poll.
Mr Farage, who did a U-turn to become Reform leader rather than go and campaign for Donald Trump in America, won in Clacton.
He became an MP at his eighth attempt.

Who Can I Vote For?: Kingswinford and South Staffordshire
The UK General Election in 2024 uses the new electoral boundaries. Only 65 of the 650 seats are staying the same. Some seats are new, while some are abolished. In these videos we look at why boundaries are changing, a summary of the new constituency including demographics and geography, how the population of the new constituency is formed from the old seats. Then we get into the politics. We present the results for each of the constituencies in 2019, then look at the trends for the main seat that is being replaced. For the main seat, we look who won, who came second, and the majority. We look at the graph of the vote share for the last 4 elections. Then we list the final list of candidates and make a prediction for the 2024 winner based on predictions using an optimistic scenario and a bad...

North Shropshire (UK Parliament Constituency)
North Shropshire is a constituency which was represented in the House of Commons of the UK Parliament since 1997 by Owen Paterson, a Conservative. Paterson resigned his seat on 4 November 2021, when faced with the possibility of a suspension from the Commons for a breach of advocacy rules and the consequent possibility of a recall petition. As a result, a by-election will be called.

Will Labour's Gaza stance cost it ‘safe seats’ this election?
Labour's stance on Gaza, and a backlash among some of its traditional supporters, is already becoming a hotly contested issue in some of the party's strongholds.
(Subscribe: https://bit.ly/C4_News_Subscribe)
The Parliamentary constituency of Birmingham Ladywood has historically been one of Labour's safest seats - since the 1940's.
In 2019 Labour held onto the seat with a 79 percent share of the vote and a majority of 28,582.
But this year Labour faces a challenge from an independent candidate who's made Gaza a major plank in his campaign.

Oldbury and Halesowen (UK Parliament constituency)
Oldbury and Halesowen was a parliamentary constituency in the West Midlands, which returned one Member of Parliament (MP) to the House of Commons of the Parliament of the United Kingdom from 1950 until it was abolished for the February 1974 general election.
It was created from the eastern section of the Stourbridge constituency, which was reduced substantially in size, as a result of the recent population growth in both Oldbury and Halesowen.
It was then partly replaced by the new Halesowen and Stourbridge constituency, with the Oldbury area becoming part of Warley West.

Why working class voters in Bolsover may turn Tory
(11 Dec 2019) After a lifetime of supporting Labour, Allan Bailey might just vote for the Conservatives – a party he says working people in Clowne used to hate.
A former miner turned District Councilor, Bailey said Labour's stance on Brexit could cost it the election in a constituency created in 1950 and that has known nothing else.
In 2016, almost 70% of voters here backed leaving the European Union.
More than three years later, the U.K. is still an EU member, and loyalty to Labour has been eroded by frustration at the political gridlock.
"I've been Labour all my life but because the Labour party is where it is and they're not doing what you're telling to do, people are looking elsewhere and thinking: Boris Johnson, I might vote for him," Bailey told the AP.
For him, people will ...

Then we list the final list of candidates and make a prediction for the 2024 winner based on predictions using an optimistic scenario and a bad day for the Conservatives.

For him, people will support whichever candidate says he'll deliver on the result of the Referendum – a message, 'Get Brexit Done', at the heart of the Conservatives' campaign.
That's good news for Conservative Prime Minister Boris Johnson, who pushed for the Dec. 12 election, more than two years early, in hope of breaking Britain's parliamentary deadlock over Brexit.
He withdrew his EU divorce deal from Parliament last month after lawmakers demanded more time to scrutinize it. If he gets a majority of the 650 House of Commons seats, he will be able to ratify the package and take Britain out of the bloc as scheduled on Jan. 31.
As the head of the local Historical Society, Bailey also helped create the Clowne Southgate Colliery memorial.
He says the mines in the area closed decades ago and the younger generations have lost sight of the strong ties between the working class and the Labour Party.
Up the street from the memorial, on the actual site of the former mine sits a thriving industrial estate. At the heart of it is Penny Hydraulics – a company that manufactures cranes and lifts.
It is in good financial health and its owners, fromer miners themselves, have recently expanded and built a brand new warehouse.
Finance Director Ashley Holmes voted Remain 3 years ago, in part because his employer benefited from staying in the Common Market.
"We're doing quite well with the EU in terms of getting grants which has been good for this area," Holmes said. "We've built that new building that you've seen up there – some of that came from grant funding from the EU. It's easy to trade abroad, overseas. It's quite a lot of our turnover that goes overseas and that's why it's been a good reason for us to vote Remain."
But three years later, he too thinks 'it's time to get on with it'.
Clowne is part of the Bolsover parliamentary constituency which is held currently by Labour MP Dennis Skinner who has been their MP since 1970.
